BROOKSDALE WOMAN PART OF HISTORYBy Laura GreenIt was Day 87 (Nov 18, 2011) and Brooksdale area woman Keely Grievemade history by walking a 250 meter stretch in the 25th Anniversary RickHansen Relay. Day 87 covered the communities of Simcoe, Delhi,Courtland & Tillsonburg and Keely’s section was located on Simcoe St inTillsonburg. The 23 year old registered nurse was one of 7,000 DifferenceMakers selected to run, walk, wheel or bike & complete their segments ofthis historical event. Each day, the medal bearers will collectively cover anaverage of 40-80 kms per day, making their way across Canada, passing theRick Hansen Medal from one Medal-Bearer to the next. The Rick HansenRelay recreates the Canadian segment of the original Man In Motion WorldTour travelling 12,000 kms coast to coast. It will travel through 600communities, reaching more than 70% of the Canadian population. Itbegan on August 24, 2011 in Cape Spear, Newfoundland & Labrador - theeasternmost point in North America. The Relay will retrace the Canadiansegment, but this time one man in motion will be represented & celebratedby many in motion. It is scheduled to conclude in Vancouver BC on May22, 2012. The Rick Hansen Medal was produced by the Canadian Mint &is composed of sterling silver (92.5% silver and 7.5% copper) and weighs400 grams. “The face of the medal consists of a series uniquely texturedribbons intersecting each other, implying motion, excitement andcelebration. The bilingual motto of the 25th anniversary: "MANY INMOTION - UNIS EN MOUVEMENT" is prominently engraved on oneribbon curving in a circular pattern.”Keely, a 2011 graduated from Trent University/Fleming College School ofNursing with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing & now working at theGrand River Hospital, Kitchener answered the one question of theapplication form - “What are you doing to make a difference?” by statingthat “she plans on working with “Doctors without Borders” once her careeris established.” Twenty-five years ago Keely’s mom Katherine & her 4 oldersiblings watched Rick Hansen wheel past at Trails End location on Hwy 2west of Thamesford on Oct 20th, 1986. It was early in the morning, soDad was working on their dairy farm. On Nov 29, the 25th AnniversaryRick Hansen Relay visited the communities of London, Thamesford,Ingersoll and Woodstock. www.rickhansenrelay.com.

Help support the program and services provided in your community!

Now that winter is nearly upon us, I'd like to share

a few bits of information that could help over the

next few months.

i) Families with asthmatics should keep the house well ventilated or

use a hepa filter system. Cigarette or wood stove smoke, indoor pets

& dust from the vacuum can set off asthma during the winter.

ii) Vitamin C and Echinacea when taken at the first sign of symptoms

can ward off those pesky winter colds. Plenty of yogurt and/or

probiotics are helpful as well.

iii) Get your flu shot to prevent influenza. Also if your tetanus is not

up to date get the tetanus/pertussis shot. Coughs that last longer than

2-3 weeks are often caused by pertussis (whooping cough) because

most of us haven't had our pertussis shot since we were children!

iv) Lastly, if you do get sick this winter take good care of yourself &

try not to spread it to others. Plenty of fluids, over the counter

medications, time off work & rest will help. Cough into your sleeve

& wash your hands often to decrease spreading the virus to others.

I hope everyone enjoys the winter months!

THAMESFORD ARENA HOLIDAY HOURSYour Thamesford Arena will be closed for Christmas holidays on Dec 24,25 & 26 and Dec 31 & Jan 1. Happy Holidays to everyone.

A NEW TRADITION... GIFT IDEASAs the holidays approach, there is no longer an excuse that, at gift givingtime, nothing can be found that is produced by Canadians hands. Yes thereis! Everyone - yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about giftcertificates from your local Canadian hair salon? Who wouldn't appreciategetting their car detailed? Canadian owned detail shops & car washes wouldlove to sell you a gift certificate. Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would likehis driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed allwinter, or games at the local golf course. There are a bazillion owner-runrestaurants - all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't thefancy eatery sort, what about a few breakfasts at the local breakfast joint.Remember, this is about supporting your home town! How many peoplecouldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shoprun by the Canadian working guy? Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom?Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning service for a day. Mycomputer could use a tune-up, I know I can find someone who is operatinga repair business. For something more personal.:Local crafts people spintheir own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, & pottery& beautiful wooden boxes. Plan your holiday outings at local, owneroperated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about goingout to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre.Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasinglocal bands. Christmas is about caringabout Canadian small businesses. And, when we careabout other Canadians, we care about ourcommunities, and the benefits come back to us inways we couldn't imagine. THIS is the newCanadian Christmas tradition. Rural Oxford Economic Development BR+E ProjectBeginning in November, community businesses will be given theopportunity to voice their opinions about the local economy. Trainedvolunteers & staff have started meeting with local businesses to identifytheir needs & concerns, ask their opinions about government, & determinein what ways the local business climate can be improved. The project isknown as the Rural Oxford Economic Development Business Retention &Expansion Project. The business visits have 4 purposes. First, we want toshow our local businesses that we really appreciate the contributions theyare making to our local community. Second, we want to see if they have anyconcerns, and, if so, if there are ways we can help. Third, we will be offeringto help our local businesses take better advantage of business resources. Finally, we want the businesses to help us set priorities on future directionsof local economic efforts. Businesses should have received an informationpackage containing an introduction letter, discussing the purpose of theproject, as well as a copy of the survey. All information collected from thesurveys will remain confidential. The data will be entered into an onlinetool, which will provide reports on the information that was collected. Wehave created a website to showcase the profiles of the rural communities aswell as provide updates on the BR+E project. Please take the time to visitthe website (www.roed.ca) and provide us with feedback. Also, please linkus to your site, and distribute this website to all your friends, clients andcoworkers who may be interested in the project! And lastly, if you are interested in becoming a Volunteer Visitor, pleasecontact the volunteer co-ordiantor, Carla Garrett at [email protected] orproject co-ordinator Karen Nelson Hamilton for more information.
