122 Years Old and Growing

ISF BeginningsThe son of a country doctor, Will Savage was born in 1859 in Ohio, but grew up in West Liberty, Iowa. Savage married in 1881 and was an Iowa farmer until the floods ruined his crops. His real career began when he started clerking in a West Liberty drug store. Observing the local farmers livestock food and drug purchases, Will decided to manufacture these supplies himself. He formed a partnership with a supposed friend who soon made off with their funds, leaving 27 year old Will Savage almost penniless. In 1886 Savage sought a new start in Minneapolis Minnesota. Minneapolis had become the center of expanding dairy farming and livestock industries, as well as the state agricultural college. Starting in a small livestock food manufacturing plant and utilizing the local scientists, he continued to grow the business and in a few years expanded with the purchase of the huge exposition building on the river in Minneapolis. There, he centered his International Stock Food company, which soon had affiliated plants in Toronto, and in Memphis, and overseas in Scotland, Ireland, England, France, Germany, and even in Czarist, Russia. Savage’s background in pharmaceutical knowledge and the use of herbs, spices, and essential oils as conditioners in the ISF specific lines of products sold so well that the ISF company grew to employ 300 people at head office.

With his growing wealth, and to satisfy a long cherished ambition to breed champion horses, Will purchased 750 acres of choice farm land 18 miles Southwest of Minneapolis on the Minnesota River- later named Savage in his honour. On his estate he built extensive stables, two race tracks, and began buying race horses. Savage purchased an up and coming horse, Dan Patch in 1902. He bought him mostly for exhibition, but partly for marketing reasons. Dan Patch was ISF’s chief promotional tool. Dan Patch turned out to be one of the fastest sulky horses of the century. He broke the record of 1 minute 55 seconds in one pacing mile in 1906 which was held for 32 years. The ironic end to this story was the Mr. Savage and his horse Dan Patch died on the same day in 1916, Dan Patch in the morning and Savage in the early afternoon after hearing about his horse.

ISF started carrying Silo Guard II™ in the early 60’s, and the business moved from Toronto, to Cambridge, Ontario in 1980. ISF was purchased by Ken and Sally Palen in April 2007 and now continues to prosper in Centralia, Ontario.

With the increasing pressure placed on genetic improvement and productivity traits, and the increasing dimension and intensification in present dairy production, cows are changing and subject to more stress than before. Mineral and vitamin nutrition play an important role in dairy production. The new line of ISF minerals was developed according to the latest information available having in mind the maintenance of healthy and productive cows and profitable farms.

All minerals in this line, when fed at the recommended feeding rate, will supplement the base diet with the required quantities of the major minerals, Calcium, Phosphorus and Magnesium and will provide all the trace minerals and vitamins needed for milk production. Herbs and Spices have been included for flavouring in all ISF products with the name Herbageum to help improve palatability and rumination.

Unique line of Dairy Vitamin/Mineral Supplements and Specialized Feed Additives

Product Description

W-6The mineral of choice for diets where corn silage represents 50% or more of the forages being fed. It’s higher content in calcium will help correct the naturally poor levels of calcium in corn silage.

W-10Specially formulated for dairy milking cow diets based on mixed forages like grass or corn silage. Its higher content in Calcium will help correct the naturally poor levels of calcium in these forages.

W-15Provides a 1:1 ratio of Calcium to Phosphorus for dairy milking cow diets based on Legumes, in the form of hay or haylage. Legumes are naturally richer in Calcium hence the lower level of calcium in this mineral.

W-16 Dry cows have specific needs, especially in the balance between Calcium and Phosphorus. W-16 is formulated to address these needs.

These minerals can be combined with the ISF Specialty Products line to address specific situations. Here are some examples. The list of combinations is vast.

Product Combination Description

W-10 or W-15+

YEASTPRO

This combination is ideal for any stress situation: fresh cows, heat stress, high grain diets, high milk production. Adding Yeastpro to the already high nutrient base provided by W-10 or W-15 will provide Yeast, Organic Zinc, Niacin and extra Vitamins.

W-10 or W-15+

BUFFERPAC

This combination is ideal when you have to feed less forage or higher grain quantities. These situations increase the risk of acidosis. Bufferpac, with its combination of buffer substances will help to keep the rumen pH at its normal levels. You can also use this combination in fresh cows diets, to help them adapt to the increased amount of grain in their diets and also supply extra magnesium and sodium.

W-16+

YEASTPRO

This combination makes an excellent close-up mineral for pre-calving cows. The Yeast will help prepare the rumen to the increased grain in the diet, and the other ingredients in Yeastpro will help the cow in different ways to cope with this challenging phase of life.

All these minerals are available with and without Salt and also different types of additives.

Consult your ISF agent for additional feeding program information.

A COMPLETE LINE OF PRODUCTS FOR DAIRY PRODUCTION

SOME IMPORTANT ASPECTS RELATED TO DAIRY PRODUCTION

Forage testing: try as much as possible to test the forages your cows are eating. This can save you money and improve milk production and rumen health. Take good, representative samples of the feeds to test. For example to take a sample from a bunk silo, either take a couple of bucket loads of silage from the bunk and mix it in the TMR mixer and get a sample from the mix, or take several separate samples from the front of the bunk, mix them together and obtain a final sample.

Sorting behavior: feed sorting occurs whenever the cows eat a different diet than the one that was formulated. Why is sorting an undesirable thing? Because sorting can cause acidosis. Decreased feed intake and erratic feed consumption patterns are the first signs of acidosis in a herd. Reduced feed intake will be associated with reduced cud-chewing and lower milk production. A milk fat depression may or may not occur. During bouts of acidosis, fecal consistency becomes more fluid. Cows often experience laminitis. Try to avoid using feeds too different in size. If you are using dry hay or straw make sure they are chopped to a regular size. If the diet is too dry, add some water, liquid feeds like molasses, or wet by products, like brewers grain or wet distillers.

Water availability: water is the most important nutrient for dairy cattle. Water quality is an important issue in the production and health of dairy cattle. Factors typically considered in water quality evaluation include odor and taste, physical and chemical properties, presence of toxic compounds, concentration of macro- and micro-minerals, and microbial contamination. Length of water troughs should be 2 inches per cow (5 cm) with an optimal height of 24 to 32 inches (60 to 80 cm). Reducing the height 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) may be logical for smaller breeds like Jerseys. Water depth should be a minimum of 3 inches (8 cm) to allow the animal to submerge its muzzle 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm). Provide at least one watering device for every 15 to 20 cows, or a minimum of two foot (60 cm) of tank space per 20 cows. Given the choice, cows will consume large amounts of their daily water consumption needs immediately after milking. Cows should never have to walk more than 50 ft (15 m) to get a drink of water. Place water sources in close proximity to the feed bunk. These sources should be protected from the sun. Cleanliness is crucial! Troughs or tanks that can be drained or dumped easily to make the cleaning process quicker and more effective are key.

Grain processing: cereal grains in dairy cows diets must be processed. In many farms is not uncommon to see dry corn just cracked in 5 or 6 different parts. This is not fine enough for cows to make good use of the energy present in the grain. An important part of it will go through the manure. Here is an example of the importance of particle size of corn in milk production and dry matter intake:

Form of presentationGround Cracked

Transition cows (3 weeks before calving to 3 weeks after calving): these are special needs cows. Talk to your ISF agent to help you design a good feeding transition program and to use the products ISF has available for this purpose. Don’t forget: prevention is always the best approach!

Testing of feeds on farm: knowing the dry matter of the feeds cows are eating is very important. You can check the dry matter of the wet feeds you have (or of the total TMR diet) easily with either a Koster Crop Tester™, or a microwave. The Koster Crop Tester™ consists of a heater/fan drying unit, a screen-bottomed sample container and a simple spring scale. Feed DM content is determined by filling the sample container with a fixed amount of that feed, then drying to a constant dry matter percentage. No calculation is required since the scale is calibrated in percentage units for both dry matter and moisture content. If you want information on how to use a microwave just ask your ISF agent and he’ll provide you with the information.

Quality forages – remember that forages are the most important feeds on a dairy farm. Because modern dairy production is based in ensiled feeds, all the ensiling procedures to attain a good fermentation must be followed. ISF recommends Silo Guard II™ for this purpose. Silo Guard II™ is a silage and hay additive known to help improve hay and silage quality, palatability, and silage bunklife. Ask your ISF agent how and where to use it for best results.

We can see that ground corn versus just cracked corn is 2 liters per cow per day! The same applies to high moisture corn. The drier it is the finer it must be. The wetter, the coarser it can be.

ISF suggests that all customers consult a qualified nutritionist to provide specific ration feeding directions to obtain maximum benefit from feeding ISF products.

Vitamin E & SeleniumHerbageum Supplement for Cattle

ISF Vitamin E & Selenium allows dairy producers to target just the addition of these nutritional elements without adding other nutrients that may not be necessary. The Selenium provided is in an organic form considered by many Nutritionists and Veterinarians to be more available to livestock especially during stressful times. When adding additional Selenium most livestock professionals would agree that it is wise to add extra Vitamin E with it as the two elements seem to complement each other in their response. Herbs and spices flavouring has been added to help enhance palatability.

Typical Use:To optimize Vitamin E & Selenium levels in rations during times of stress or when local conditions produce Selenium deficient feedstuffs. It is important not to exceed the recommended amount provided on the label as Selenium can be toxic to livestock at high levels. Caution should be exercised when weighing out proper amount of this product to be fed.

Ruminant Protein SupplementProtein Supplement for Cattle

This product is a combination of several sources of high quality protein with high rumen by-pass content. It may be used to balance diets with poor quality protein sources (example: “caramelized” hay, where part of the protein is unavailable to the animal, wet haylage, where part of the protein may be in a very soluble form, similar to urea), or as part of a feeding program aimed for high producing animals where the quality of the protein and its amino acid profile is important. It may also be used to provide some of the protein required in high straw diets for dry cows.

Typical Use:Use to optimize milk production in high production dairy cows, and the amino acid profile of the diet in dry cows, especially close up dry cows. Young calves, whose rumen is not yet fully functional, may also benefit from this product for their growth and development.

Feeding Rate:Topdress or mix ISF Rumen Protein Supplement with the cattle’s regular ration according to the following table.

Thiamine (Vitamin B1)Herbageum Supplement for Cattle

ISF Thiamine (Vitamin B1) supplement gives the option to dairy producers to increase the thiamin levels of their rations. Herbs and spices flavouring have been added to help enhance palatability.

Typical Use:Thiamine (B1) has received more attention lately by Nutritionists and Veterinarians due to the increased use of corn ethanol and distilling by-products such as corn distillers dried solubles and corn gluten feed in livestock rations. Due to the high sulfur content of these feed stuffs, additional thiamine (B1) is believed to help offset the negative affects of the higher sulfur levels. It is thought that polioencephalomalacia is one of these negative impacts in ruminant rations that would warrant supplementation of Thiamine (B1) in the ration. Use in all livestock feeds to optimize Thiamine (B1) level of the ration. Use to offset the negative impacts of high sulfur feedstuffs like corn products from ethanol and distiller products and also the negative impacts of high grain diets.

Feeding Rate:Topdress or mix Thiamine (Vitamin B1) supplement with grain and protein sources to provide the specified amounts according to the following table. Provide clean, fresh water at all times.

Biotin (Vitamin H)Herbageum Supplement for Cattle

ISF Biotin (Vitamin H) supplement gives the option to dairy producers to increase the biotin levels of their rations. Herbs and spices flavouring have been added to help enhance palatability.

Typical Use:Nutritionists and Veterinarians often suggest adding Biotin to rations to help improve foot health and in some types of livestock to help improve reproduction. Biotin is one of the newest vitamins to be added to livestock feeds and much research is ongoing as to its effects. Some commercial feeds may not contain added Biotin which is another reason a Nutritionist or Veterinarian may suggest adding Biotin to a ration.

E18

At least 17 minerals are required by beef cattle. Vitamins, in addition to being vital, are required in adequate amounts to enable animals to efficiently utilize other nutrients. High-quality forages and/or grains furnish a large portion of the required minerals but they don’t provide all of them and - very important - there is a great variability in the mineral and vitamin content of these feeds. With this in mind, ISF developed a new line of vitamin/mineral supplements for beef cattle, with a low inclusion rate but concentrated enough to provide the required nutrients for the different types and phases of beef production. In addition, the ISF line of special feed additives can be combined with the beef supplements whenever a special need arises, providing the ISF customer with a complete line of beef products.

All vitamin/mineral supplements in this line, when fed at the recommended feeding rate, will supplement the base diet with the required quantities of the major minerals – Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium and Sodium will provide all the trace minerals and vitamins needed for beef production. Herbs and spices flavouring has been included in all ISF products with the name Herbageum to help improve palatability and rumination.

Unique line of Beef Vitamin/Mineral Supplements and Specialized Feed Additives

Product Description Beef Dry Cow

Beef Nurse Cow

These two supplements are formulated for the dry and nursing phases of production. Both have the same high levels of vitamins and trace minerals, but differ in the levels of Calcium and Phosphorus. Dry cows need less Calcium but more Phosphorus. This helps avoid problems at calving. Nurse cows need more Calcium to face the increase in milk production after calving.

Feedlot Specific Feedlot cattle are fed high quantities of grain. These diets are normally very poor in Calcium. Feedlot Specific corrects this problem. At the same time, due to it’s fortification in Vitamin E it’s suited to be used in most of the premium beef programs.

Cattle Specific This is an all purpose supplement specially formulated for growing animals, like beef or dairy replacement heifers. Its high levels of vitamins and trace minerals and balanced levels of Calcium, Phosphorus and Magnesium make it a well suited product for different type of diets.

Pasture Specific A free choice vitamin mineral supplement for animals on pasture. It has a special pak of organic minerals, including Zinc, Copper and Manganese to help keep hoof health and strength.

All these minerals have the required amount of salt and are available with different types of additives.

These minerals can be combined with the ISF Specialty Products line to address specific situations. Here are someexamples of the commonly used combinations.

Product Combination Description Feedlot Specific +

Yeastpro This combination is ideal for any stress situation. When animals arrive to feedlots they are very stressed with the transport, being mixed with other animals, new facilities, etc. Yeastpro, with its unique mixture of research proven additives like Yeast, Organic Zinc, Niacin and extra vitamins will help keeping the animals stronger and adapt the rumen to higher levels of grain.

Feedlot Specific + Bufferpac

In the finishing stages of feedlot operation, the diet of beef animals has a very high quantity of grain. If for some reason the amount of forage they eat is less than adequate (overcrowding, less palatable forage) the risk of acidosis is greatly increased. ISF Bufferpac, with its combination of buffer substances will help to keep the rumen pH under its normal levels

SOME IMPORTANT ASPECTS RELATED TO BEEF PRODUCTION

BEEF COW’S LIFE CYCLE - target is 365-day calving.

Calving - Lactation (about 200 days) - Breeding (first 90 days of lactation)Gestation (about 280 days) - Dry (about 60 to 90 days) - Calving

Reproductive Objectives - Numbers to remember and aim for:

· Breeding Season – We should aim for a breeding season of 60 days. If it’s longer less fertile females are more likely to become pregnant. Less fertile females are better culled, not kept.

· Target- 65 % of the cows bred during the first 21 days of the breeding season;· Better than 95 % bred within 60 days (the only sure way to identify those 5 % who are open is to preg check);

First Calf Heifers - By calving time at 2 years of age, you have invested a substantial cost in the 1st calf heifer. The challenge: get her rebred on schedule so she can stay in the herd at least long enough to return that investment. She must be on a rising plane of nutrition at calving to improve body condition and colostrum quality. After calving it is wise to give her more energy throughout the breeding season. Rotating fresh growth pastures or feeding some grain are options.

Creep Feed - Creep feeding is the practice of providing supplemental feed to calves before weaning. Creep feeding helps in supplementing mother’s milk and pasture. The feed is provided in a facility designed so that adult animals are unable to consume the creep feed. By providing creep feed, it is possible to increase preweaning weight gains and weaning weights. Here are some ideas on how to feed creep feed:

· set-up the creep near the water and mineral source, so when the cows/calves come to water and loaf in that area, calves will take time to inspect the calf creep and gradually start eating from the creep.

· If you think calves are not going into the creep area to your satisfaction put a little bit of high quality hay in front of the opening where the calves enter the creep feeder.

Weaning Time - Starting calves on feed:· Calves which were creep fed tend to adapt to bunk feeding more rapidly.

· Avoid starting calves on fermented or wet feeds such as silages, high moisture grains, or wet by-products. These feeds can have odours and tastes which may limit intake during the first week or two of bunk breaking.

· After weaning calves can be grouped by size ensuring adequate feeding and watering availability and space.

Mineral Feeding – Mineral supplement mixes can be force fed, meaning that a certain amount of mineral is mixed with other feeds. This is what happens for example in TMR fed animals. Cattle can also be fed free choice mineral supplements. When free choice feeding minerals, do not provide any other salt source either in loose or block form because ISF minerals have all the required salt. It is very important to be sure that the cattle consume the label prescribed rate of the minerals provided, especially when free choicing the mineral. The biggest reason cattle do not consume the label prescribed rate of minerals is when salt is provided free choice extra. Lower intakes can result in under nourished cattle and higher intakes result in extra unnecessary costs. Do not place the mineral feeder right next to the water supply. Make cattle travel at least half way across the pasture to get the mineral to prevent over consumption.

Mineral Quantities – Don’t forget this. ISF Beef vitamin/mineral supplements were designed in a way that you only have to use two bags of product per cow per year! This is really a small investment for the benefits provided.

Choosing the right mineral – ISF Beef vitamin/mineral supplements were designed with different phases of production in mind but also different types of diets. We can for example feed Beef Nurse Cow all year round, even when she’s dry, if her diet is based on low calcium feeds, like grass hay or corn silage.

Quality forages – Remember that forages are the most important feeds on a beef farm. Normally beef production is based on hay and more and more on ensiled feeds. ISF recommends Silo Guard II™ to help preserve hay and silage. Silo Guard II™ is an additive that may help to improve hay and silage quality, palatability and silage bunklife. Ask your ISF agent how and where to use it for best results.

Vitamin E & SeleniumHerbageum Supplement for Cattle

ISF Vitamin E & Selenium allows beef producers to target just the addition of these nutritional elements without adding other nutrients that may not be necessary. The Selenium provided is in an organic form considered by many Nutritionists and Veterinarians to be more available to livestock especially during stressful times. When adding additional Selenium most livestock professionals would agree that it is wise to add extra Vitamin E with it as the two elements seem to compliment each other in their response. Herbs and spices flavouring has been added to help enhance palatability.

Typical Use:To optimize Vitamin E and Selenium levels in rations during times of stress or when local conditions produce Selenium deficient feedstuffs. It is important not to exceed the recommended amount provided on the label as Selenium can be toxic to livestock at high levels. Caution should be exercised when weighing out proper amount of this product to be fed.

Thiamine (Vitamin B1)Herbageum Supplement for Cattle

ISF Thiamine (Vitamin B1) Supplement gives the option to beef producers to increase the Thiamine levels of their rations.

Use in all livestock feeds to optimize the Thiamine (B1) level of the ration. Use to offset the negative impacts of high sulfur feed stuffs like corn products from ethanol and distiller products and also the negative impacts of high grain diets.

Feeding Rate:Topdress or mix ISF Thiamine (Vitamin B1) supplement with a balanced complete feed to provide the specified amounts according to the following table. Provide clean, fresh water at all times.

Horses are used for recreational purposes, sport (e.g., racing, polo, and Olympic events), exhibition, breeding, ranch and farm work, and even therapy. Type of use, age, and physiological state affect the nutrient requirements of horses. Effective feeding management practices must consider many factors, including nutrient requirements, environmental conditions, and available feeds. Vitamins and Minerals play an important role in the nutrition of horses. While constituting only a minor part of the equine diet, these nutrients play a critical role in the health of horses. Minerals are involved in a number of functions in the body. The horse obtains most of the necessary minerals from forages and concentrates, but the mineral content of feeds may vary a lot with the type of soil, plant specie, etc. Vitamins are essential to normal metabolism and their lack in the diet causes deficiency diseases.

With this in mind, ISF developed a new line of vitamin, mineral premixes and supplements for horses. In addition, the ISF line of special feed additives can be combined with the ISF horse products whenever a special need arises, providing the ISF customer with a complete line of feeding options.

All products in this line, when fed at the recommended feeding rate, will supplement the base diet with the required quantities of the major minerals – Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium and Sodium and will provide all the trace minerals and vitamins needed for horse production. Herbs and Spices flavouring have been included in all ISF products with the name Herbageum to help improve palatability and intake.

Unique line of Horse Vitamin/Mineral Products and Specialized Feed Additives

Product Description

Horse Specific

A good base supplement that provides the required vitamins and minerals to keep horses in good health. It also has the right amount of salt to be fed free choice. It’s modest feeding rate and its balanced composition makes it ideal for all year round fortification of low activity horses.

Dan Patch Horse Supreme

Having the same base of Horse Specific, Dan Patch Supreme is packed with special additives and B-vitamins for horses undergoing more intensive activities or subjected to stress situations. This mineral has no salt. Salt must be made available to provide 25 to 50 grams per day per horse.

These minerals can be combined with the ISF Specialty Products line to address specific situations. Here are someexamples of the commonly used combinations.

Product Combination Description Horse Specific

+ Yeastpro

Yeastpro is an excellent additive to the diet. Yeast improves fibre digestion and is a potential source of vitamins and/or growth factors. Yeastpro also supplies organic zinc that helps in the maintenance of healthy hooves and hair, and it also provides extra vitamins.

Horse Specific +

Vitapac

Vitapac is an ideal supplement whenever we need to reinforce the diet with extra trace minerals, B- Vitamins and Vitamin A, D, E.

Horse Specific or Dan Patch Supreme

+ Biotin

Daily supplementation with biotin improves hoof wall integrity. Biotin is a B vitamin that stimulates keratin production in the hoof laminae and coronary band, strengthening and improving the periople, hoof wall, sole, frog and white line.

Horse Specific or Dan Patch Supreme

+ Thiamine

Thiamine is involved in carbohydrate metabolism and therefore energy metabolism. Levels of thiamine in normal diets may not be adequate for exercising horses. Thiamine is also important to keep a normal appetite.

For proper digestive tract function, horses should be fed a minimum of 1% of their body weight per day in long-stem hay dry matter. Thus, using long-stem, good quality hay is very important in any horse feeding situation.

The variety of hay you choose should always come second to the quality of the hay. Hay has to be free of dust, mold, and foreign objects. Mold dust acts as an allergen and can cause inflammation of the respiratory tract in horses. It also can be a source of mycotoxins, which are poisonous compounds produced by molds. Moldy, dusty hay simply should not be fed to horses.

Foot care is one of the most neglected horse management practices. Most lameness that impairs the usefulness of a horse can be prevented by proper foot care and reasonable management. Foot care should be as routine as feeding and watering. It should include (OMAFRA Fact Sheet, 1997):

1. Routine cleaning2. Periodic trimming3. Corrections of minor imperfections4. Treatment of foot diseases and injuries

Horses are herd animals. Because of this they have a social hierarchy in the herd (also called the pecking order). The pecking order must be taken into account when a horse is turned out into a paddock with resident horses. If possible, gradually introduce the horse to the group and watch it carefully to ensure that it is not injured by the other horses.

A source of clean, unfrozen water is especially important in the winter because horses tend to drink less when the weather turns cold. Less water coupled with a high fibre diet (hay, straw) may quickly lead to impaction of the intestines and colic. Although horses eat snow, they are not as efficient as cattle at obtaining the water they need from snow alone. Do not rely on snow to provide your horse with the water it needs.

Horses require shelter to protect them from wind, rain, and the sun. A natural grove of trees provides good shade, but for shelter from the elements, a three-sided enclosure works the best. Make sure your shelter is large enough to enable all your horses to fit inside together, and build it so the back wall faces the prevailing wind.

If your horse is stabled most or all of the day, it will require grooming daily to keep its coat healthy. However, don’t over groom a horse that spends most or all of its time in the pasture. The natural oils in its coat help to keep your horse warm and dry.

The horse, unlike ruminants (cattle, goats, sheep, etc.), has a relatively small capacity for feed in its digestive tract. Horses can consume about 2.5 % of their body weight per day. As an animal that evolved as a nibbler and grazer, it is best to feed horses smaller quantities of feed, especially concentrate, at least twice per day at about 12-hour intervals. That means a 450 kg horse will eat about 11 kg of feed per day of which at least half should be forage (pasture, hay, or hay cubes).

Horses are susceptible to a variety of diseases, as well as both internal and external parasites. To keep your horse healthy, it is important to vaccinate against diseases, deworm regularly, and properly care for teeth and feet.

Quality forages – remember that forages are the most important feeds for horses. Hay is probably the most important feed in any horse diet. It should be nutritious, palatable and without molds. ISF recommends Silo Guard II™ to help preserve hay. Silo Guard II™ is an additive that may help to improve hay quality and palatability. Ask your ISF agent how and where to use it for best results.

Raising sheep and goats is a growing sector in animal production. Genetic improvement of these species has resulted in larger mature sizes, greater lamb or kid numbers, and higher milk production. Nutrition must follow this trend to higher production animals. ISF products for Sheep and Goats were designed having in mind this reality. They provide the animal with optimum levels of vitamins and minerals. In addition, the ISF line of special feed additives can be combined with the base products whenever a special need should arise, providing the ISF customer with a complete line of sheep and goat feeding options.

All products in this line, when fed at the recommended feeding rate, will supplement the base diet with the required quantities of the major minerals – Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium and Sodium - and will provide all the trace minerals and vitamins needed for sheep and goat production. Herbs and Spices flavouring has been included in all ISF products with the name Herbageum to help improve palatability and rumination.

ISF Lamb/Kid 100 Starter

ISF lamb/kid 100 starter is the ideal product to use in case you want to make your own creep feed on-the-farm. It’s combination of high quality ingredients including milk products, along with a package of additives like yeast and B-Vitamins make this product the perfect match for the ingredients you may have at the farm, like soybean meal and corn or mixed grain. To be fed while lambs/kids are still using mother’s milk or milk replacer.

These Vitamin/Mineral Supplements can be combined with the ISF Specialty Products line to address specific situations. Here are some examples of the commonly used combinations.

Product Combination Description Sheep / Goat

+ Yeastpro

This combination is ideal for any stress situation: fresh sheep and goats, heat stress, high grain diets, high milk production. Adding Yeastpro to the already high nutrient base provided by the Sheep and Goat premix will provide Yeast, Organic Zinc, Niacin and extra Vitamins.

Sheep / Goat +

Bufferpac

High milk production sheep and goats, especially after lambing/kidding have very high requirements for energy. Producers correct this by supplying more grain. Sheep and goats are very susceptible to acidosis due to this overload of grain. Bufferpac, with its combination of buffer substances will help to keep the rumen pH at its healthy levels.

Sheep / Goat+

Superlac

High milk production sheep and goats, especially after lambing/kidding have very high requirements for energy. Superlac is an ideal supplement in this situation. Its combination of By-pass Fat, Yeast, Organic Zinc, Niacin and extra Vitamins will help to increase milk production and/or milk butterfat and/or body condition, without the adverse effects of feeding more grain.

ISF suggests that all customers consult a qualified nutritionist to provide specific ration feeding directions to obtain maximum benefit from feeding ISF products.

SOME IMPORTANT ASPECTS RELATED TO SHEEP AND GOAT PRODUCTION

Small ruminants require energy, protein, vitamins, minerals, fibre, and water. Energy (calories) is usually the most limiting nutrient, whereas protein is the most expensive. Deficiencies, excesses, and imbalances of vitamins and minerals can limit animal performance and lead to various health problems. Fibre (bulk) is necessary to maintain a healthy rumen and prevent digestive upsets. Water is the cheapest feed ingredient, yet often the most neglected.

Dry matter intake - as a general rule of thumb, sheep and goats will consume 2 to 4 percent of their body weight on a dry matter basis in feed. The exact percentage varies according to the size (weight) of the animal, with smaller animals needing a higher intake (percentage-wise) to maintain their weight. It’s important to maximize dry matter intake. To do this we must pay attention to some aspects, like:• Supply good quality forage;• If it’s not a TMR (Total Mixed Ration) diet, feed the forages first and then the grain;• Feed the grain in small quantities through out the day. If possible only 400 grams/meal or less;• Always have free choice forage;• Always change diets and feeds slowly;• Don’t forget to have good quality water always available.

Milk production after lambing/kidding is greatly dependent on the dry matter intake at lambing/kidding. The objective in late gestation should be to keep a good volume of forage in the rumen. Save good quality forages for this phase. It is known that the intake of an extra 100 grams of dry matter per day in late gestation corresponds to an extra 120 grams of milk after lambing/kidding.

Start feeding the same feeds the animals will eat after lambing/kidding 6 to 7 weeks before it happens. The quantity of grain should be increased until it reaches around 50 % of the quantity they’ll eat at peak lactation. According to the animals, the quantity of grain will vary from 0.5 to 0.7 kg at lambing/kidding. Pay attention to an excessive body condition because that can cause pregnancy toxemia, difficult lambing/kidding and a difficult start of lactation.

Adding by-pass fat to sheep and goat diets may promote an increase in milk butterfat. This is especially true in the beginning of lactation. Add ISF Superlac to encourage this effect.

All lambs and kids must drink colostrum. It’s their life insurance. Feed around 0.25 L in the first 2 hours of life.

Don’t forget to prepare the energy reserves of the animals for breeding. This is called “flushing” and consists of an increase in energy 3 weeks before until 3 weeks after breeding time. This can be done with extra grain (200 to 300 grams/hd/d). The objective is to have more eggs and hence more kids and lambs born.

There are many disease conditions for which sheep and goats may be vaccinated. Most veterinarians recommend flocks should be vaccinated at least for clostridial diseases, specifically enterotoxemia (type C and D) and tetanus. Talk to your veterinarian about a good vaccination program.

Sheep and goats are very susceptible to worms due to their close grazing behavior and slow-to-develop immunity. Goats are more susceptible than sheep when forced to graze (versus browse). The parasites that cause the most damage to sheep and goats are stomach worms and coccidia. The most important time to deworm a sheep or goat is prior to (or at the time of) parturition. When a ewe/doe lactates, her immunity to parasites is compromised. She is also the primary source of infection to her newborn lambs/kids. Deworming ewes/does prior to turning them out to spring pasture is also a good strategy because it helps to reduce the contamination of the pasture, as the worms resume their life cycle with the onset of good weather.

Quality forages – remember that forages are the most important feeds on a sheep or goat farm. Normally sheep and goat production is based on hay and more and more on ensiled feeds. ISF recommends Silo Guard II™ to help preserve hay and silage. Silo Guard II™ is an additive that may help improve hay and silage quality, palatability and bunklife. Ask your ISF agent how and where to use it for best results.

Vitamin E & SeleniumHerbageum Supplement for Sheep and Goats

ISF Vitamin E & Selenium supplement allows sheep and goat producers to target just the addition of these nutritional elements without adding other nutrients that may not be necessary. The Selenium provided is in an organic form considered by many Nutritionists and Veterinarians to be more available to livestock especially during stressful times. When adding additional Selenium most livestock professionals would agree that it is wise to add extra Vitamin E with it as the two elements seem to compliment each other in their response.

Thiamine (Vitamin B1)Herbageum Supplement for Sheep and Goats

ISF Thiamine (Vitamin B1) supplement gives the option to sheep and goat producers to increase the thiamin levels of their rations. Herbs and spices flavouring have been added to enhance palatability.

Biotin (Vitamin H)Herbageum Supplement for Sheep and Goats

ISF Biotin (Vitamin H) supplement gives the option to sheep and goat producers to increase the biotin levels of their rations.

The advanced genetic development of pig production has resulted in higher productivity, including higher weight gain, better feed to gain ratio, and more piglets weaned per sow per year. Supplementation of feed with minerals, vitamins, and essential amino acids to meet the requirements of pigs is an important practice to improve productivity and health of swine.

ISF has formulated a complete line of supplemental premixes designed to provide Vitamins A, D, E, K, major and trace minerals, B-Vitamins, and essential amino acids formulated to produce feed for sows, pig starters, growers, developers, and finishers. Natural herbs and spices flavouring has been included in all ISF products with the name Herbageum to help improve palatability of feed. Natural probiotics are also added to help improve intestinal health and help improve productivity.

Unique line of Swine Vitamin/Mineral Supplements and Specialized Feed Additives

Product Description

Sow Specific

ISF Sow Specific supplemental premix is designed to supply all the minerals, vitamins and essential amino acids that sows require both in gestation and in lactation. Sows require special feeds for the best reproductive performance, and ISF Sow Specific will deliver all the nutrients to help to maintain the well being of the sow. Sows are the foundation of any swine farm and sow nutrition is key to that success.

Sow Booster

ISF Sow Booster is designed to boost ISF Hog Specific complete ration with the nutrients needed to provide the same nutrients as ISF Sow Specific complete ration would provide. This product allows the flexibility for producers to receive bulk ISF Hog Specific supplement (where available) and boost the ration with bagged ISF Specific Sow Booster thereby handling fewer bags. Typically, larger farrow to finish farms would prefer this option if available in their area.

Piglet Specific 300, 150, 50.

ISF Piglet Specific supplemental premixes are very complex formulas designed to feed baby piglets from the day of weaning until they leave the baby piglet nursery to go to the finisher barn. Only the most highly digestible sources of protein and carbohydrates including milk products and probiotics are selected for these very important baby formulas. Choosing which combination of ISF Piglet Specific supplements to use will be based on the age and the weight of the piglets at weaning.

Hog Specific

ISF Hog Specific supplement is ideal to formulate feed for growing, developing and finishing pigs. The excellent balance of minerals, vitamins, and essential amino acids of feed formulated with ISF Hog Specific make it the best choice to reach the productivity goals in a piggery.

Swine Performance Pak

ISF Swine Performance Pak can be used to boost ISF Hog Specific complete ration with the nutrients needed to provide the same nutrients as ISF Piglet Specific 50 complete ration would provide. Some producers like this flexibility. ISF Swine Performance Pak can also be added to enhance ISF Hog Specific complete ration for growers, developers and finishers, to help maximize performance especially when lower intakes occur.

These Vitamin/Mineral Supplements can be combined with the ISF Specialty Products line to address specific situations. Here are some examples of the commonly used combinations.

SOME IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF SWINE PRODUCTION

The Neonatal PigletTemperature of the Farrowing Pen: Temperature in the creep area should be 34ºC the first week. The use of radiat-ing heat lamps in a corner of the farrowing pen, or floor heating are typically used to maintain the temperature for the piglets while not increasing the temperature in the barn, which is not good for the sow. Monitoring temperature in the pen is critical for the survival of piglets. If temperature is lower, piglets will be shivering; therefore, spending their ener-getic reserves.

Colostrum: Colostrum is a source of protein, glucose and fat. It is also of the most importance that piglets suck colos-trum to provide them with sources of energy. Colostrum also provides the piglet passive immunity from the sow, which provides the first line of defense that piglets have to fight disease. Be sure that all your piglets get colostrum the first 3 hours after birth.

Sows’ Milk ProductionMilk production of sows depends on several factors including genetics, environment and feed. Excessive feeding to sows during pregnancy results in reductions in feed intake during lactation and subsequent reduction in milk production. Feed gestating (pregnant) sows to body condition, not too fat and not too thin. After farrowing increase feed slowly for the first week then full feed until weaning.

WaterAfter oxygen, water is the most important nutrient for living organisms. Water is important for many physiological func-tions. Muscle contains 77% water, and sow’s milk contains 81% water. Thirsty animals reduce feed intake, thus reducing growth or milk production. Check if drinkers are working properly because some of them can be plugged by debris. Pigs need clean and fresh water to support their demands for growing, breeding, and milk production. Needs of water:Suckling pigs need water, in addition to the water they drink in milk. Suckling pigs drink 46 ml/day on average. Every crate should have one bowl, or cup or a nipple drinker for piglets. Providing a trough beside the feeder in the farrowing pen is good for lactating sows because it allows the sow to spend less time drinking. If nipples are used, they should be 10 cm higher than the back of the standing sow, and in an angle of 15º.

SOME IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF SWINE PRODUCTION

FEED

Feed is nearly 65% of direct cost of pig production. To produce good quality feed it is important to mix good quality ingredients. Corn, wheat and barley should be free of molds. Moldy and toxin contaminated grains reduce feed intake and weight gain. Soybean meal (48% protein): Is the best and most used vegetable protein for swine. Many feed trials have been conducted with swine using soybean meal. Full Fat Soybeans: Roaster or extruder full fat soybean are also good sources of protein and fat. Full fat soybean should be cooked to reduce anti-nutritional factors that impair digestibility of protein. Feeding developers and finisher over 10% full fat soybean can result in soft bacon that is not desirable to packers. Breeding & Feeding the Gilt and Sow: Typically, it is best to breed the gilt the second or even the third estrus. Two weeks before breeding, increase feed consumption up to 3 kg/day. The day of mating, reduce feed intake to 2 kg/gilt/day. In the last 3 weeks before farrowing feed intake can be increased up to 2.5 kg/gilt/day. After farrowing, increase the feed intake gradually until day seven then feed sows to appetite. After weaning feed 3.0-3.5 kg/sow/day until mating, then reduce to 2-2.3 kg/sow/day for the first 30 days. After that, sows can be fed to maintain a good body condition.

RECOMMENDED PARTICLE SIZE OF GRAINS (MASH FEED)When manufacturing feeds for poultry in a MASH FORM the particle size of the processed grain is typically kept coarser than feeds that are pelleted. Below are charts that show examples of the micron (particle) size most poultry nutritionists would suggest.

BROILERS AND ROASTERSAge (Weeks) Particle size (microns)

Day 1 to the market 1,000 – 1,200 with antibiotics Day 1 to the market 1,500 without antibiotics

LAYERSAge (Weeks) Particle size (microns)

0 - 5 850 – 1,000 6 weeks and older 1,000 – 3,200 microns

Use of oyster shell or grit (coarse limestone) - Oyster shell, or grit (coarse limestone) can be added to the layer complete feed especially if egg shell quality declines. Another way of improving the hens bone strength and egg shell

strength is to provide one feeder with oyster shell or grit per every 10 feed feeders in the pen.

TURKEYSAge (Weeks) Particle size (microns) 0 - 5 1,000 – 1,200 6 weeks and older 1,200 – 1,500Offer free choice grit (coarse limestone) with mash diets to turkeys 6 weeks and older to help improve digestibility of feed. Provide 1 feeder with grit per every 10 feed feeders in the pen.

SOME IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF POULTRY PRODUCTION

FEEDIt is important to select reliable suppliers of raw materials. The production of feed of high quality depends on the quality of raw materials. Some protein sources of vegetable origin can contain one or more anti-nutritional factors.Soybean meal (48% protein) is an excellent source of protein. This ingredient is the most reliable source of vegetable protein for poultry. Full fat soybeans are an excellent source of protein as well as fat. This ingredient must be heat treated (cooked) typi-cally by machines called roasters or extruders to destroy the anti nutritional factors that it contains. Heat treated soy-beans can be included in the ration up to 20% by weight in hen’s feed and its addition may help increase egg size. Most nutritionists would not recommend more than 15% for broilers, 10% for grower turkeys and 15% for finisher turkeys.

MANAGEMENT GUIDE FOR POULTRYPoultry species are highly productive. Birds require special care to prevent the outbreak of illnesses and maintain health. It is very important to provide an adequate environment to reach the goals in production that modern poultry breeds offer in the market place.

BROODINGTemperature control is very critical in the wellbeing of birds. During the first week the temperature for young birds on the floor brooding should be maintained at 33 - 35º C at their eye level. Reduce temperature by 2º C every week until 21 - 23 ºC. Adjust brooder temperature 24 hours before the birds arrive to the brooder room, and also provide drinkers with water 24 hours before the birds arrive to the brooder room to acclimate water to room temperature. This is especially important in the winter season. Birds also require a constant range of relative humidity. Ideal relative humidity into the pen is 40 to 60%. If is below 40% birds will be dehydrated and will lose weight. If relative humidity is higher than 60% there will be more wet litter.

It is very important to put a ring around the brooder to prevent the little birds from going too far away from the heat, wa-ter and feed source. The height of the brooder should be adjusted regularly to provide the proper zone heating for these little birds. If the temperature is too high birds will spread out away of the heat source. If the temperature is too low birds will huddle below the heat source. If there are drafts, birds will crowd to one side of the circle. When the tempera-ture is well adjusted birds are evenly distributed into the ring.

ISF Vitamin E & Selenium allows poultry producers to target the addition of these nutritional elements without adding other nutrients that may not be necessary. The Selenium provided is in an organic form considered by many Nutritionists and Veterinarians to be more available to livestock especially during stressful times. When adding additional Selenium most livestock professionals would agree that it is wise to add extra Vitamin E with it as the two elements seem to compliment each other in their response.

Typical Use:Use to optimize Vitamin E and Selenium levels in rations during times of stress or when local conditions produce Selenium deficient feedstuffs. It is important not to exceed the recommended amount provided on the label as Selenium can be toxic to livestock at high levels. Caution should be exercised when weighing out proper amount of product to be fed.

Feeding Rate:Mix Vitamin E & Selenium supplement with properly formulated poultry complete rations to provide specified amounts according to the following table. Provide clean, fresh water at all times.
