HANGI – Thank you’s Looking back on some of the highlights of last term it is hard to go past the hangi that happened towards the end of the term. We would like to thank you, our Kelson School Community for your amazing support of this school wide event. Your tamariki (children) loved learning about the hangi and also being involved in the preparation and being able to watch it being lit, the hangi being put down, and lifted. As a kura (school) we are so fortunate to have a community that will get involved and volunteer their time to help out. Thank you to our Whanau group for your amazing organisation and hard work throughout, thank you to those people who dug the hangi pit and helped with the lighting, laying and lifting of the hangi. Thank you to those people that worked tirelessly preparing vegetables, packing meals and cleaning up and lastly thank you to our school community for your involvement and support.

YEAR 6 SCHOOL CAMP

I was lucky enough to spend some time at the Year 6 school camp in the last week of last term. I was so impressed with the amazing attitude that all of the Year 6 children showed towards the challenges they faced at camp. Thank you to the parent helpers who gave up their time to attend the school camp and support Jane Murray in the running of this camp. The Year 6 children should be very proud of their achievements throughout the week.

YEAR 4/5 EOTC WEEK In the last week of last term our Year 4/5 children were involved in a great EOTC (Education Outside the Classroom) week. The activities ranged from weaving, hacky sack making, a day at Percy’s Reserve exploring our local environment, time at the river and to finish and perhaps a highlight for me was the bike ride to Hikoikoi Reserve. We worked out that we rode a total of 18 kilometres. Thank you to Jenni Adams and Daniel Salter for their great organisation for the week. Also a huge thank you to all of the wonderful helpers who volunteered their time to help out on all of the events. Once again without this support we would not be able to run these amazing events for your children.

BOOK CLUB The latest book club closes on Wednesday 26th May. SOCCER WITH STEVE

We are very lucky to have the expertise of Steve Mosley back at Kelson School for this term. Steve will be working with each class for half an hour every Wednesday with soccer skills and fitness. Please send your children to school on Wednesdays with appropriate footwear and clothing for soccer skills.

SPORTS NEWS Netball The Netball season has begun this term for the Years 3-6. Kelson School has four teams entered into the competition. The Years 5-6 girls have one more week of grading games to determine what grade they will be playing in this term. The Years 3-4 start on 21 May with an orientation day. Basketball Kelson School have three teams entered in the Hutt Valley Basketball League this term. We have two junior teams entered in the Tiniball competition; they play on a Monday afternoon. It was great watching the juniors playing on Monday and giving a new sport a go. We have one senior team entered in the Miniball competition; they play on a Thursday evening. Good luck to them for their first game tomorrow afternoon. Cross Country The Kelson School Cross Country is happening in Week 4 on Tuesday 24 May, postponement date is Thursday 26 May. We require parents to help on the day as marshals around the course. Please see Nicky Harrison or Amy van Druten if you are able to help. A team of Year 4-6 students will be selected to attend the Western Zone Cross Country based on the results from our school Cross Country. Touch Rugby Big congratulations to the Kelson Runners who won their grade last term! They all played a great season and worked really well. Thank you to Tony Weavers for coaching the boys. Nicky Harrison and Amy van Druten

THE NEW ZEALAND RED CROSS We would like to acknowledge the New Zealand Red Cross. They offer a basic first aid course to all students. Our Year 6 students attended this (at school) before going on School Camp. The children learned valuable lifesaving skills to help them in an emergency such as how to call for help, the importance of the recovery position, treating a burn, and what to do if their young sibling is choking. New Zealand Read Cross offers such course to thousands of school students every year, all free of charge. Also, two of our staff attended a New Zealand Red Cross Comprehensive First Aid Course last term, at their rooms in Lower Hutt.

FANTASTIC CHILDREN AT KELSON SCHOOL

Congratulations to Sam Weavers who recently received the weekly Player of the Day Award for his Hutt Old Boys Marist Rugby team. Well done Sam!
