The Sunday before Easter is Palm Sunday—the day Jesus entered Jerusalem as the King of kings the week before Passover. Many of God’s people traveled to Jerusalem for Passover. Jesus and His disciples traveled to Jerusalem as well. Near Bethphage (BETH fayj) and Bethany near the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples ahead into a village. Jesus told them, “You will find a young donkey tied there. No one has ever sat on it. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone says to you ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’” Jesus was going to fulfill a prophecy by the prophet Zechariah that said, “Look, your King is coming to you, gentle, and mounted on a donkey.” (Zech. 9:9) Jesus made a spectacular entrance into the city. He rode a donkey, and people laid branches and their robes on the ground in front of Him. The people welcoming Jesus into Jerusalem believed He was the promised Messiah, but they expected Him to overthrow Roman oppression and set up an earthly throne. Jesus sent a different message. Jesus entered the temple and turned over the tables of the money changers and those selling doves. Read Isaiah 56:6-7. Jesus referred to Isaiah, declaring that His kingship would not just be over the Jews but over all people. While Jesus was in the temple, He healed the blind and the lame. Check out the words of Isaiah 35:4-6. Jesus’ actions declared, “I am not just your King; I am also your God.” Finally, the priests and the scribes heard the children worshiping Jesus as their King. “Do You hear what these children are saying?” they asked. Jesus replied, quoting Psalm 8:2: “Have you never read: You have prepared praise from the mouths of children and nursing infants?” Jesus gladly received their praise because He was worthy of their praise. As we prepare for and celebrate Easter, help kids connect the dots between God’s promises of a Messiah and Jesus’ coming. Help them understand why Jesus came: to save the world from sin! • The Triumphal EntryMatthew 21:1-17; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-44; John 12:12-19

It was the time of year that the Israelites celebrated Passover. Many Israelites had traveled to Jerusalem to remember what God had done when He rescued His people from slavery in Egypt.

Jesus and His disciples traveled to Jerusalem, too. When they neared Bethphage (BETH fayj) and Bethany near the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of His disciples ahead into a village. As soon as you enter the village, Jesus told them, you will find a young donkey tied there. No one has ever sat on it. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone says to you Why are you doing this? say, The Lord needs it. Jesus was going to fulfill a prophecy by the prophet Zechariah that said, Look, your King is coming to you, gentle, and mounted on a donkey.

The disciples did as Jesus asked. As they untied the donkey, its owners said to them, Why are you untying the donkey? The Lord needs it, they said. Then they brought the donkey to Jesus, threw their robes onto the donkey, and helped Jesus get on it. People were spreading their robes along the road, and others spread palm branches cut from the fields.

The whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen. The King who comes in the name of the Lord is the blessed One. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven! Hosanna! The word hosanna means save now. The people knew Jesus was their promised King!

Some of the Pharisees, the religious teachers, told Jesus, Teacher, tell your disciples to be quiet! Jesus answered, If they did not praise Me, the rocks would praise Me!

Jesus went to the temple complex in Jerusalem and drove out everyone buying and selling in the temple. He quoted the prophet Isaiah and said, My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations. But you are making it into a den of thieves!

While Jesus was in the temple complex, people who were blind and people who were lame came to Him. The blind and lame were not allowed to worship in the temple. Jesus healed them.

    The BIBLE STORY

Older Kids Bible Study Leader GuideUnit 32 Session 3 2014 LifeWay 3

  • The chief priests and scribes saw the miracles that Jesus performed and heard the children saying, Hosanna to the Son of David! or Our king is here! Our king is here! Even the kids knew Jesus was the promised King. The scribes and priests were angry and asked Jesus, Do you hear what these children are saying? They are saying you are a king!

Yes, Jesus replied. The Psalmist said: You have prepared praise from the mouths of children and nursing infants.

Jesus left them and went to the town of Bethany to spend the night.

Christ Connection: During Jesus triumphal entry, the people welcomed Him as King. Jesus was the Messiah spoken about by the prophet Zechariah: Look, your King is coming to you; He is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey (Zechariah 9:9).

usually has a Christmas parade, and everyone lines up on the street to watch the floats and marching bands walk by. When Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey, He fulfilled what the prophet Zechariah had said about the Messiah. Our big picture question today is, How did people act when they saw Jesus?

Tell the Bible story (10 minutes)Open your Bible to Matthew 21:1-17; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-44; or John 12:12-19. Tell the Bible story in your own words, or show the Bible story video The Triumphal Entry.Leader The prophet Zechariah wrote that the Kingthe

Messiahwould enter Jerusalem on a donkey. Jesus fulfilled that prophecy when Jews from all over the Empire had come for Passover; many people witnessed Jesus coming as King! How did people act when they saw Jesus? Our answer is, People welcomed Jesus to Jerusalem as their King.

What was the crowd shouting when they saw Jesus? Youre right! The crowd shouted Hosanna! Do you remember what hosanna means? Yes! The people were calling on Jesus to save them. They thought Jesus was coming as a king to overthrow Rome. Jesus was coming to save them, but not in the way they thought. Well learn

  • more about Jesus plan to redeem His people next week. Now, the next thing Jesus did was drive out the money

changers and people selling doves in the temple. While Jesus was in the temple complex, people who were blind and lame came to Jesus for healing. People with various diseases could not worship in the temple. Jesus showed that anyone could come to God for forgiveness.

When the children saw Jesus heal people, they sang praises to Jesus. The scribes and priests were upset. Why do you think they were so upset? Youre right! The kids were worshiping Jesus as the Messiah.

During Jesus triumphal entry, the people welcomed Him as King. Jesus was the Messiah spoken about by the prophet Zechariah: Look, your King is coming to you; He is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey (Zechariah 9:9). Even though for the past three years of His earthly ministry Jesus showed the people through His teaching and His miracles that He is the Messiah God promised to send, the religious leaders did not want to believe it. They were determined to kill Jesus. They didnt understand the reason Jesus came in the first place: to take the punishment for our sins by dying on the cross!

The Gospel: Gods Plan for Me (optional)Using Scripture and the guide provided, explain to boys and girls how to become a Christian. Tell kids how they can respond, and provide counselors to speak with each kid individually. Guide counselors to use open-ended questions to allow kids to determine the direction of the conversation.

Dear God, thank You so much for sending Your Son, Jesus, to die on the cross to save us from our sins. Lord Jesus, even though all those people welcomed You as King, You knew that just a short week later, they would want to crucify You. • The Gospel: Gods Plan for MeAsk kids if they have ever heard the word gospel. Clarify

that the word gospel means good news. It is the message about Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation. Use the following guide to share the gospel with kids.

God rules. Explain to kids that the Bible tells us God created everything, and He is in charge of everything. Invite a volunteer to read Genesis 1:1 from the Bible. Read Revelation 4:11 or Colossians 1:16-17 aloud and explain what these verses mean.

We sinned. Tell kids that since the time of Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23) The Bible calls this sin. Because God is holy, God cannot be around sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves Gods punishment of death. (Romans 6:23)

God provided. Choose a child to read John 3:16 aloud. Say that God sent His Son, Jesus, the perfect solution to our sin problem, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. Its something we, as sinners, could never earn on our own. Jesus alone saves us. Read and explain Ephesians 2:8-9.

Jesus gives. Share with kids that Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again. Because Jesus gave up His life for us, we can be welcomed into Gods family for eternity. This is the best gift ever! Read Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; or 1 Peter 3:18.

We respond. Tell kids that they can respond to Jesus. Read Romans 10:9-10,13. Review these aspects of our response: Believe in your heart that Jesus alone saves you through what Hes already done on the cross. Repent, turning from self and sin to Jesus. Tell God and others that your faith is in Jesus.

Offer to talk with any child who is interested in responding to Jesus.

If you have a large number of kids, prepare more than one set and invite kids to play in smaller groups.

Instruct kids to sit in a circle. Mix up the cards and drop the cards in the middle of the circle between the kids. When you say go, kids will collect the cards and place them in the correct order. Once kids reassemble the key passage, lead all the kids in the circle to say it together.Say It seems hard to believe that only a week after people

welcomed Jesus to Jerusalem as their King, they shouted for Him to be crucified. What the crowd meant for evil, God meant for good. (Acts 2:23) It was Gods plan for Jesus to die on the cross and be raised from the dead so that when we trust in Him, we can receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Our key passage makes it clear that Jesus died once to save us, and now He is alive forever. We have the hope of eternal life with Him too.

Briefly remind kids of the first Passover and Gods command for His people to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread each year. (See Exodus 13.) Invite volunteers to read Zechariah 9:9 and Isaiah 53. Point out how the Passover celebration and messianic prophecies are just a few of the ways the Old Testament points to Jesus death and resurrection. Say How did people act when they saw Jesus? People
