HANDS, LAYING ON OF. This occurs in Scripture as a patriarchal usage, as with Jacob's layinghis hands upon the heads of Joseph's children(Gen. 48:14). It also occurs in later times, aswhen Jesus placed His hands upon children presented to Him for His blessing (Matt. 19:15). Thelaying on of hands formed part of the ceremonyobserved at the appointment and consecration ofpersons, such as of Joshua by Moses (Num.27:18-23; Deut. 34:9). It sometimes attended thehealing of persons by a prophet, although in oneinstance (2 Kings 4:34) Elisha placed his handsupon the hands of the child. In the gospel age theaction was, undoubtedly, used in connectionwith the bestowal of supernatural gifts, or themiraculous effects of the Holy Spirit (Mark 5:23,41; 7:32), although our Lord extended His handsover the apostles when blessing them at theMount of Olives (Luke 24:50). The apostles laidtheir hands upon the sick and healed them (Matt.9:18; Mark 6:5, 13, etc.), and at times also laidtheir hands upon the baptized, that they mightreceive the special gifts of the Spirit (Acts 8:15-18; 19:6). A quite natural extension of this practice was to apply it to those who were set apartto the sacred office in the church—the men already possessed of delegated power and authorityproceeding, like Moses in respect to Joshua, toput some of their own honor upon those chosento the same responsible and dignified position(14:3; 1 Tim. 4:14). "Not that the mere act couldconfer any special spiritual power, but it wasemployed as a fit and appropriate symbol todenote their full and formal consent to the bestowal of the divine gift; and, being accompaniedby prayer to Him who alone can really bestow it,might ordinarily be regarded as a sign that thecommunication had actually taken place."

ANOINTING. Anointing the body with oil was anancient and widespread custom common amongEgyptians, Hebrews, and inhabitants of the FarEast, as well as among Greeks and Romans. Thepurpose was, doubtless, to keep the skin supple

to rnoderate the evaporation that is so greatin hot climates. In Scripture the usualHeb. wordfor anointing is mashah; the Gk. term is chrio,to "rub." See the second article Anointing (below).

Conseciration. The first instance of the religious use of oil is the anointing of the stone byJacob (Gen. 28:18; 35:14), evidently designed tobe a formal consecration of the stone, or spot, to^ purpose. Under the Mosaic law personsand things set apart for sacred purposes were

' anointed with the "holy anointing oil" fEx30:23-25, 30-33). 5^^ Priesthood, Hebrew.

Coronation. It was a custom among the Jewsto anoint with oil those set apart as kings whichcustom was adopted by the Christian church.

Figurative. The anointing with oil was a symbol of endowment with the Spirit of God (1 Sam

61*1) for the duties of theoffice to which a person was consecrated (Lev S)See King; Priest. *

ANOINTING (Gk. chrisma, "ointment""anointing"). The gift of the Holy Spirit as anefficient aid in getting a knowledge of the truth(1 John 2:20). Not that the work of JesL wSimperfect, but the Spirit helps us to understandthe truth He taught and thus to glorify Him(John 16:14) in whom the full revelation of Godhad been given (v. 15).
