In 2017, the Texas Rangers MLB Youth Academy at the Mercy Street Sports Complex will open to give children across North Texas a location to play baseball and softball in state-of-the-art facilities. In addition to providing year-round baseball and softball instruction, the Academy will be a place to host tournaments, coaching clinics, and skills camps. The Academy will also provide children with access to tutoring programs, college prep classes, college and career fairs, financial literacy and internship programs, courses teaching math through the use of baseball statistics, and MLB industry alternative career workshops.

In partnership with Globe Life and the Arlington Independent School District, the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation developed the Leading Off Program, which focuses on providing eighth graders the tools to succeed after graduation. Throughout the school year, Leading Off students from Carter, Nichols, and Workman Junior High Schools participate in various workshops and field trips that concentrate on instilling eight primary leadership qualities. In November, participants focused on the leadership quality of confidence with their visit to Rangers TV partner, FOX Sports Southwest. Students received a behind-the-scenes tour of the studios and had the opportunity to meet with on-air talent and producers as they shared the importance of confidence in life, regardless of occupation. During the second workshop in December, the Leading Off participants focused on the spirit of giving and the leadership quality of empathy by shopping for and sorting toys at the Cowboy Santas Program Inc. warehouse for underserved families in the DFW area.

Team Rangers, a volunteer initiative comprised of the Texas Rangers front office staff, focuses on making a positive impact in our DFW community through acts of service throughout the year. In honor of Veterans Day, Team Rangers lent a helping hand at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery to assist in getting the grounds ready for their big Veterans Day celebration by cleaning monuments, headstones, and laying mulch. During the holiday season, Team Rangers partnered with the Cowboy Santas Program Inc., a charitable organization that provides toys to children from low-income Tarrant County families, to provide smiles to eight families. The families joined Team Rangers for a holiday dinner party at Globe Life Park where they received gifts and care packages donated by Team Rangers and the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation.

Nearly 200 guests attended the Evening with the Rangers event featuring Cole Hamels and Jeff Banister on December 18. Presented by Capital One Bank, attendees enjoyed hearing from Cole Hamels about his trade to the Rangers, his favorite moments this season, and throughout his career. Guests also heard from Banister, the American League Manager of the Year, about his first year with the Rangers and his expectations for 2016. On December 3, Derek Holland teamed up with Medical Center Arlington, Rangers Captain, and the Arlington Fire Department to host a fitness rally at AISD’s Crow Elementary. The monthly presentation includes education on healthy meal options, exercise alternatives, and ways to stay active. In addition to healthy choices being highlighted in baseball, members of the Arlington Fire Department explained how a healthy lifestyle is required in many different professions.

MCA and the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation partnered on the Fitness All-Stars initiative to motivate students to make healthy decisions and understand the importance of exercise and nutrition. The fitness program runs every school year and includes a fitness DVD, in-class instruction, monthly submissions of Fitness All-Stars, prize packs, and school visits. At the conclusion of the school year, one school is selected as the Fitness All-Star School of the Year. This honor includes a trip for the school’s entire fifth grade class to a Rangers game, an on-field presentation, and $5,000 for their physical education program.

For the second year in a row, Albertsons hosted the Texas Rangers just keep livin students in their Homeruns for Health initiative. Students from Dallas ISD, Arlington ISD, and Fort Worth ISD participated in a scavenger hunt with the assistance of Albertsons employees. Students chose a healthy and unhealthy option of each designated item. Once chosen, the students went before judges to explain their selections. The winning high school, L.G. Pinkston of Dallas, received a $1,000 gift card to Albertsons for their efforts.

The Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation and just keep livin foundation aim to assist students in improving their physical and mental health through exercise, teamwork, gratitude, nutrition, and community service. The program runs throughout the school year but the students actively participate in 5Ks and volunteer projects on weekends and their days off.

The Texas Rangers visited two local children’s hospitals spreading holiday cheer this past December. The visits took place on Tuesday, December 15 at Children’s Health and Wednesday, December 16 at Cook Children’s. It is considered to be one of the best days of the season for executives, broadcasters, and the team.

The Texas Rangers Wives partnered with Shadow Buddies and hosted a Pink Party at Cook Children’s Hospital in August. The day included a spa experience with manicures, makeup, and hairstyling for young patients in the hospital. Each youngster also received a Rangers goody bag, a Shadow Buddy, and lunch from Papa John’s.

Robinson Chirinos and his wife Heidy served as the honorary chairs of the Texas Rangers Cowboy Santas Toy Drive. As part of the Cowboy Santas Silver Star program, they visited Wedgewood Nursing Home and collected toys at Globe Life Park. Many of Robinson’s teammates joined in the festivities by signing autographs at Globe Life Park. In addition to autographs, Delaware North Sportservice provided refreshments while fans enjoyed holiday crafts, face painting, and a photo booth with a special appearance from Santa and Mrs. Claus. Over 1,900 toys were collected for needy children in Tarrant County.

Chirinos also provided a pre-Thanksgiving dinner with Spaghetti Warehouse for the Arlington Life Shelter. During the visit, the Rangers were presented with the Heroes for the Homeless Award. Robinson was joined by Steve Buechele, Elvis Andrus, Tom Grieve, and Michael Young to help serve dinner.

Elvis Andrus hosted a holiday party for the Special Olympics Young Athletics Program on December 21. The families enjoyed a delicious dinner followed by cookie decorating with Elvis. Each youngster also received a Rangers backpack full of goodies, and Elvis donated $4,500 to the Young Athletics Program.
