Presidents Report December 2013

What a great first half of the year our club has had. We have succeeded in telling Noosa Region what Community Engagement and service to the needy is all about.

Let me as your President wish you and all your family members plus your pets a Happy Xmas and prosperous New Year. Our work on the Xmas Raffle and the Xmas Cake/ Pudding- mostly sold, has allowed all of us to have a bit of a break from selling in the streets. That’s the way it should be with people tucking in to help on rosters and then a break leading up to Xmas. Of course we have the Carols, and then the Car Park project but these projects are fun and a delight to work on. The good thing is we do not have any other volunteering overlays.

The Salvation Army Adopt a Family went well with $400 donation from the club and many members supplying extra gifts as well. Well done to Carolanne and Geoff for co-ordinating this.

Our Xmas party was a hoot with Santa taking centre stage alongside our very own Elf helper. The meal at the golf club on a glorious day was just the ticket and all people attending were well pleased. Congrats to the Social committee for organising this big and happy task. Even the friendly Kookaburra enjoyed the day and gave plenty of our members a work out with the broom.

In the background the two VP’s have been organising the Rosters, developing the program for the Australia Day Event and undertaking maintenance and new work at the den.

We had a great result from the RSL Carols with fine weather, a huge crowd, and hundreds of Burgers, over 500 buckets of chips and drinks galore sold on the night.

The Christian Outreach Carols on 22nd December in our Lions Park again saw an outstanding stage presentation, a huge crowd and spectacular fireworks – and hungry hordes queued at our vans for chips and burgers.

Our last meeting was a very good experience with Peter Franks giving us the good oil on the Noosa Council Transition. It seems to be good news all round except for the Library, but the Transition team are working on this. One wonders whether the Service Clubs of Noosa could help here in bolstering the books held in the library or coming up with an outside the square solution to keep the reading material varied and topical as it has been in the Amalgamation days??

Anyway at the end of the year and the start of another, please remember your fellow Lions Members that are not feeling so well, give them a call and add some cheer to their New Year.

Jenny and I wish you all the best for 2014.

Coming Events: After a huge schedule of activities in the past few months, and once the car parking project is completed, there is some respite in the months ahead. But there are important projects ahead which require your assistance, so please lock these dates in your diary and add your name to the rosters.

Bunnings Sausage Sizzle will be on

Wednesday 15th January.

Australia Day on 26th January will

be held in our Lions Park will feature the citizenship ceremony, the Local Legends Award, and entertainment.

Recent Projects The Raffle All raffle tickets were sold and the draw favoured Farida Wills from Coolum. Farida purchased the ticket at Bunnings when our members were busy assisting police in the campaign to secure car number plates.

Farida has that winning smile as Cathy Jack

presents the prize.

The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal Again this year, our Lions Club has made a donation of toys and food items to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal.

The Wesley Care Tewantin – Bunnings BBQ The day went well with Gary Dunn meeting Paul , myself, Allan, and Chef De Cuisine from Wesley Care Tewantin. The Lions involvement was to set up and pull down with the working rosters performed by the crew from Wesley Care Tewantin. Our Lions Club donated the sausages and drinks, and onions, with all proceeds raised to be donated to Wesley Care Tewantin. With the BBQ fired up Chef de Cuisine was at with the tongs, with onions and sausages on the sizzle. We thought we ran out of onions with the first ten minutes , but then we discovered the Gary Dunn stash of onions, and all was well. Gary always supplies plenty of onions. By 3:30 pm we had three sausages left on the BBQ, so good time to close down, clean up and thanks to Chris Pullin and Jenny Schofield for assisting in getting the gear, cold room and unused sausages back to the den, plus washing up.

Paul Beeston with Wesley volunteer Allan, and Chef Daryl with the tongs. All done, another project and one that combines the efforts of the people we are donating to - we hope that the proceeds raised will allow Wesley Care Tewantin residents to enjoy outings and activities over the Christmas period. This type of project with pre ordained funds and help from the group we are assisting really is a feel good arrangement and easier on our volunteering hours.

Peter Schofield “The help from the Lions has enabled this sausage sizzle to happen, staff are very busy at this time of year, with Christmas approaching. We value their support and couldn’t do it without them.” Chris Thompson, Wesley Care Tewantin, Leisure and Lifestyle Coordinator.

Christmas Cakes Another successful project, well managed by Louise Tully. Always in demand, these cakes almost ‘walk out the door’. But it still takes a lot of effort to organize distribution of the cakes and collection of the funds, and we thank you, Louise, for your dedication.

President Peter thanks guest speaker Peter

Franks.

Dinner Meeting Tuesday 3rd December The guest speaker at the last Dinner Meeting was Peter Franks. Peter is the Transfer Manager appointed by the Queensland Government to establish the new Noosa Council. Peter outlined the progress made so far, with everything on track for the new Council to be up and running as scheduled. The first Council meeting will be on January 2nd. Importantly, Peter gave a progress report on the costs of the de-amalgamation, which are expected to come in at well less than half the sum that was promoted by the Government during the de-amalgamation vote. The final sum will depend upon the cost of redundancy payments that will have to be paid to employees transferred from the Sunshine Coast Council, and who are surplus to Noosa Councils needs. He explained that most transferring staff have been allocated into positions, but that 28 are not required and others will need to compete for positions yet to be advertised. Councilors have been meeting, and in Peter’s opinion, have been working well as a team. Peter’s presentation was followed by many questions from Lions.

Tewantin Noosa Lions Christmas Party The Club celebrated its Christmas Dinner at The Tewantin Noosa Golf Club on Sunday 8th December. The weather was perfect and the view from our private deck was superb. Many thanks to our hard working social Committee for making the day a success. And special thanks to our wonderful Father Christmas, Mark Shelton.

As they say – a photo tells a thousand words.

RSL and Christian Outreach Carol events. These two events have been mentioned in the Presidents report, and sincere thanks go to all who worked the shifts to make these events such a success for the Club.

It’s hot work in the chip van…

Car Parking Project This project is still underway, blessed to date by fine (and at times extremely hot) weather, and the crowds of day trippers and holiday makers have really appreciated the opportunity to park so close to Hastings St and the beach. Up to Friday 3rd January, around 3200 cars had passed through the gate. The project will run until Sunday 12th January.

The Tewantin Noosa Lions Family wishes to extend our sympathy to

members on the recent loss that they have experienced.

Dean Bridger, son of Vilma and Barry Bridger passed away on 22nd November

and was remembered at a special event at the Tewantin Fire Station Park on 8th

December.

More recently, Barbara and Trevor Luff experienced the loss of Barbara’s mother.

To both families, we can assure you that our thoughts and wishes are with you.

Margaret Margaret Jolly experienced some heart problems in recent days and received treatment at Buderim Hospital. It’s great to hear that Margaret is well on the mend, and she has asked that the following be included in the bulletin.

Dear Club members, I wish to thank you all for the “Get Well” card that Gus sent on behalf of the Club. I am very pleased to be at home and taking things quietly, wonderful to have Carmen here to help us. Everything happened so quickly for me with having my Heart Attack. I want to thank all the individual Lions who sent emails, or phoned Allan about my health. Thank you all very much’ Yours in Lionism, Margaret Jolly
