He spent several months in Trinidad, Colorado, working in a saloon as a Faro dealer. Wyatt then drifted into many other western towns, such as Dodge City, Kansas, and New Albuquerque, New Mexico, and eventually ended up in California. While in San Francisco, Earp met Josephine Marcus, with whom he spent the next 40 years. In 1897, at the height of the gold rush in Alaska, Earp and Josie decided to travel north for the mining boom. Since Wyatt was not one to spend time looking for nuggets, he wanted to “mine” the miners. To do that, he wanted to open a gambling house and secured financial backing from several wealthy men in San Francisco. The rush in the Yukon was just about over, so Wyatt and Josie boarded a ship headed for Nome, Alaska. When the ship made a stop in Juneau, a Deputy U.S. Marshal was waiting. The Deputy Marshal, with a small posse of local citizens, met Earp as he disembarked from the steamship and confiscated his Smith & Wesson Model 3 revolver. The Havasupai Indianswho live on the GrandCanyon’s south side oncemade perfume fromwildf lowers. Their namemeans People of the BlueGreen Water.

An 1863 visitor toArizona from Californiacomplained that Tucson“was a city of mud boxes, dingy and dilapidated, cracked and baked into a

composite of dust and filth.”Describing the people wholived there, he said, “Isuppose there could not befound so degraded a set ofvillains.” 1863 was the yearArizona Territory wasfounded.

The 1877 sutler’s storeat the U.S. Army’s CampVerde south of today’sSedona included a saloonwith bottles of whiskey

displayed on both sides of alarge mirror. The store’sother merchandise was ontables and shelves andincluded cloth and clothes, pots, pans, tin cups anddippers, kerosene lanterns, canned food, f lour, coffee, and plug tobacco.

An argument betweentwo lawyers at Prescott’scounty courthouse turnedviolent in 1883 whenbystanders took sides andbegan to fight. They threwcuspidors, inkwells, andchairs at each other, and onebegan slashing with a knifeand wouldn’t stop untilsomeone shot him.

When Arizona’s newly-created Navajo County washeadquartered at Holbrookin 1895, the town becamethe USA’s first county seatwithout a church. It didn’thave one until 1913 when theMethodists built themselvesa place of worship.

The 1905 editor of theWilliams newspaper warnedthat residents were inphysical and moral danger. That was because, he said, the six-mile-an-hour speedlimit wasn’t enforced andprostitutes were living in“respectable” parts of town.

Percival Lowell, theFlagstaff astronomer whosetelescope was on Mars Hill, made a prediction thatstartled the world in 1909.He said an unknown planetwas going to hit the sunsomeday and terminate alllife on earth. Earlier, he’dmade an international namefor himself by claiming Marswas inhabited by intelligentbeings who built canals hecould see. Lowell’sobservatory still exists andis open to the public.

Since nodocks had been built, passengers departing thesteamship had to climb intosmall rowboats to get toshore. When they got within30 feet of the beach, strongmen would wade through theswirling water to carry womenand steamer trunks ashore ontheir backs. Upon finding nohotel accommodations intown, Wyatt and Josie foundshelter in a shack located afew minutes from town on a“spit” of land near the shore.

The town was stillgrowing when the Earpsarrived. Nome consisted oftwo muddy main streets linedwith tents and ramshacklebuildings made of scraplumber. Construction wasgoing on everywhere withhammers and saws. Basicsanitation was lacking. An outbreak ofsmallpox led to theconstruction of a townhospital.

Pacific, but he had openedthe way. More than a decadewent by, however, beforewagons began to rollwestward in sizeablenumbers. By the time of the“Great Migration” in 1843the “prairie schooner,” as thecovered wagons soon cameto be called, was playing a

major role in America’swestward expansion.

Perhaps it all startedwhen the eighteenth centuryDutch settlers in theConestoga Valley ofPennsylvania cast aside theirtraditional carts andreplaced them with a four-wheeled wagon of their owndesign. This “Conestoga”wagon served as a model forvarious makes that were tosee service in the West.

The most distinctivefeatures of the Conestogawagons were their sturdy,out-turned, saucer-shapedwheels. For ease in steeringand to compensate for roughand often slanting mountainroads, the front wheels werecommonly made some twofeet smaller in diameter thanthe rear. In addition, thewagon’s boat-shaped bodycaused the load to holdtoward the center ratherthan the ends or sides, preventing too great a shiftin the center of gravity. Forprotection from the sun andrain, there was a canvas topon a framework of sturdyribs or bows. As it movedalong the ridges, silhouettedagainst the sky, its boatlikeappearance was emphasized, and perhaps it was then thatsome New Englander, homesick for the white-sailedships that beat in and out ofEast Coast harbors, dubbedthe Conestoga a “prairieschooner.”

The prairie schoonerwas the dominant vehicle inthe Santa Fe trade in theperiod between 1820 and1840 and was used by thethousands of migrants whotraveled west over theOregon-California Trail .Because it could carry morefreight than pack animalsand was easier to defend

Paiutes

spring of 1860, Indiansgathered at Pyramid Lake tofish and began talking ofwaging war on thetroublesome whites. As wascustomary among manytribes, they called on a warleader rather than a peacetimechief like Winnemucca. Theirchosen leader, Numaga, wasa gifted warrior, but heforesaw dire consequences ifthey challenged the numerousand well-armed Americans.“You will be forced among thebarren rocks of the north,” hewarned, “you will see thewomen and old men starve, and listen to the cries of yourchildren for food. I love mypeople; let them live.” YetNumaga was soon compelledto fight when Paiutes rescuedtwo girls who had beenabducted and held at WilliamsStation—a stop forstagecoaches and the newlyorganized Pony Express—andthen killed several men thereand left the station in flames. The war was on, andNumaga’s foe would be one ofthe few settlers with militaryexperience, Major Ormsby.

Numaga anticipated thatOrmsby’s raw recruits wouldbe overeager and laid a trapfor them below Pyramid Lake.On May 12, 1860, they rodeinto it, chasing after a smallgroup of warriors untilhundreds more emerged frombehind trees and brush andhemmed them in. Some ofthem escaped, but Ormsbyand more than 60 of his menwere slaughtered. As oftenhappened in such conflicts, the tribe’s initial victoryexposed them to

overwhelming retaliation. Inearly June, 200 U.S. troopsand 500 volunteers led by aformer Texas Ranger, Col.Jack Hays, defeated Numaga’swarriors. Paiutes fled northinto the Black Rock Desert, where they went hungry as hehad warned. Numaga laterarranged a truce that sparedthe lives of Paiute refugees, but they had to wait yearsbefore receiving a reservationalong Pyramid Lake thatoffered them refuge fromhostile settlers.

November MeansRodeo in Florence!

November in Florence always means rodeoexcitement. This year, two events highlight thetraditions and history of rodeo. The first is a booksigning by well known author Jan Cleere whorecently released a book on rodeo photographerLouise Serpa.

Explaining the title of her new book, NeverDon’t Pay Attention: The Life of RodeoPhotographer Louise L. Serpa, Cleere says,“Anyone who has ever stared down an angry bullcoming full throttle across an arena, aimed rightat your gut, will understand why Louise Serpaadamantly and often uttered the adage thatbecame her motto.”

The book is an amazing account of a New Yorksociety woman who ended up out West with hernose buried in the dirt and her eye glued to acamera, loving every minute of becoming the firstwoman endorsed by the Rodeo CowboysAssociation to venture inside the arena and shootsome of the most exciting and incrediblephotographs of rodeo action.

The book signing and meet the author eventwill be held at the Pinal County Museum in

wearing his rival’s prizedpossession. At the announcedtime, Wild Bill stood in thesquare and warned Tutt not toproceed. Unfazed, Tutt boldlystrode towards his enemy andpulled his pistol. Wild Billsimultaneously drew his pistoland fired. Tutt fell - dead. WildBill quickly turned and leveled

his gun towards a crowd ofTutt’s supporters who hadgathered nearby, warningthem not to interfere. Theytook the hint.

Later, when Hickokbecame the law in such wide-open towns as Abilene andHays City, Kansas, hisreputation alone was oftensufficient to persuade dustycowhands to think twice aboutdisrupting the peace.

However, his fame was a

double-edged sword - to some, killing a man of such reputewas a trophy worth having.During the afternoon ofAugust 2, 1876 Wild Bill satplaying poker in the No. 10saloon in Deadwood, DakotaTerritory. Abandoning hisusual precaution of alwayssitting with his back to a walland engrossed in the game, hefailed to notice Jack McCallsneak in through a back door.McCall calmly approachedHickok from behind, raisedhis pistol and shot him deadfor reasons still not fullyunderstood.

In 1869 thirty-two-year-old Wild Bill Hickok wasmarshal of Hays City Kansas.Miguel Otero witnessed one ofthe exploits that would makeWild Bill a legend. Otero’saccount appears in his bookMy Life on the Frontier 1864-1882 (1936):

“I was an eye-witness toWild Bill’s encounter with BillMulvey, and shall relate thedetails as they linger in mymind:

they do it in Arizona.”Mazzanovitch said, “U.S.Marshal Albert Lowe took his(Earp’s) gun away, slapped hisface and said, ‘That’s how wedo it in Alaska!’ The Marshalthen told him to go home andgo to bed or he would run himin.”

A man known only asBlakeslee corroboratedMazzanovitch’s account. Hesaid, “Wyatt got a drink ortwo too much and got the ideahe was a bad man fromArizona and was going to pullsome rough stuff, when U.S.Marshal Albert Lowe slappedhis face and took his gun awayfrom him.”

Wyatt Earp was inAlaska for about four years. He spent the warm months inNome operating his saloon;during Nome’s dark and coldwinters, he went south toCalifornia. He filed severalmining claims, but usually just“mined the miners” in hissaloon. He once hoped tobecome a deputy marshal forthe town, but was passed over.

According to the San

Francisco Examiner: “WyattEarp was making moneyperhaps faster than he evermade it before. If businessruns with him next summer asit did after his arrival in thecamp, he will be able to retirewith all the money he desires.”

By 1900, Nome wasbusier than ever. Instead ofthe f limsy rowboats anddories, large rafts ferriedpeople and cargo to shore.Every summer, huge shipsloaded with machinery andmerchandise left Seattle to

voyage to the north. To supplyfresh meat for the miners andtownsfolk, hundreds of cattlewere brought ashore.

The Seattle Intelligencercommented that “The majorbusiness in Nome in 1900 wasnot mining, but gambling andthe saloon trade. DowntownNome was lined with 100saloons and gambling houses, with an occasional restaurantsandwiched in between.”

against Indians and outlaws,it soon became the favoriteof the commercialfreighters.

The f irst overlandemigrants to start forOregon with wheeledvehicles were Dr. MarcusWhitman and Henry

Harman Spalding and theirwives. This missionary partyleft Leavenworth, in presentday Kansas, in 1836 boundfor Cayuse Indian country, near where Walla Walla,Washington, would be built. It was natural, then, that formutual protection andcompanionship they shouldjoin up with RockyMountain-bound fur traders.

On this particular trip,

which followed the PlatteRiver, the Whitman partymanaged to drive theirwagons as far west as FortLaramie. Here Whitman’scompanions complainedabout the hard work theyhad experienced with thewagons, which hadsometimes upset two orthree times a day. The menalso objected to the time lostdigging a rut on sidehillslopes to prevent the wheelsfrom skidding to the bottomof a gulch, and the necessityof cutting down trees to letthe wagons throughwoodlands. They urgedWhitman to go no furtherwith the abominable wagons.

Whitman had hoped tobe the first to drive wagonsacross the continent, but heconsented reluctantly toleave one of his vehicles atthe fort. With the other hestruggled on to Bear Riverwhere the front axle broke, forcing him to improvise acart on the rear wheels. Withthis makeshift arrangement,Whitman reached Old FortBoise, near Snake River, oneday to be the site of Nampa,

“I was standing nearWild Bill on Main Street, when someone began‘shooting up the town’ at theeastern end of the street. Itwas Bill Mulvey, a notoriousmurderer from Missouri, known as a handy man with agun. He had just enough redliquor in him to be mean andhe seemed to derive greatamusement from shootingholes into the mirrors, as wellas the bottles of liquor behindthe bars, of the saloons in thatsection of the street. As wasusually the case with suchfellows, he was looking fortrouble, and when someonetold him that Wild Bill was thetown marshal and therefore itbehooved him to behavehimself, Mulvey swore that hewould find Wild Bill and shoothim on sight. He furtheraverred that the marshal wasthe very man he was lookingfor and that he had come tothe ‘damn town’ for theexpress purpose of killing him.

“The tenor of theseremarks was somehow madeknown to Wild Bill. Buthardly had the news reachedhim than Mulvey appearedon the scene, tearing towardus on his iron-grey horse, rif le in hand, full cocked. When Wild Bill saw Mulvey

he walked out to meet him, apparently waving his handto some fellows behindMulvey and calling to them:‘Don’t shoot him in the back;he is drunk.’

“Mulvey stopped hishorse and, wheeling theanimal about, drew a bead onhis rifle in the direction ofthe imaginary man hethought Wild Bill wasaddressing. But before he

realized the ruse that hadbeen played upon him, WildBill had aimed his six-shooterand fired-just once. Mulveydropped from his horse -dead, the bullet havingpenetrated his temple andthen passed through hishead.”

proved to be a wonderfulinvestment for Earp and hadbecome a preeminentestablishment for gambling andliquor. During the wintermonths, Earp went onshopping sprees in SanFrancisco and Seattle topurchase marvelous furnishingsand other supplies for thesaloon. High-stakes pokergames were often held duringgold rush days with bets rangingfrom $10,000 a hand to as highas $500,000! Betting on prize-fights was also a popularpastime. Earp often refereed thebouts himself.

Even though the DexterSaloon was extremely profitableduring 1900, Wyatt Earpdecided to pull up stakes andreturn back to California. Hesold his share of the saloon tohis partner, Charlie Hoxie, andtransferred his mining claims toJosie’s brother, NathanMarcus. In the fall of 1901,Wyatt and Josie left town forgood. Part of the decision toleave was because he and Josiewere having serious domesticproblems.

Wyatt Earp made anestimated $80,000 during the

four years he spent in Nome.As the Earps boarded thesteamship SS Roanoke, theformer Arizona lawman took

one last look at the boom townand remarked: “She’s been agood old burg. Mighty goodto us.”

bloodshed and even lives, theproblems were solved, andthe year 1843 witnessed thebeginning of the floodtide ofwestward pioneers.

Jumping off places forthis wave of settlers were theMissouri River ports thatwere served by steamboattransportation. Wagon roadsand trails led out from thesesupply towns and convergedat Fort Kearny on the PlatteRiver.

From there the OregonTrail followed the oldtrapper route up the southside of the Platte, crossingto the north bank west ofFort Laramie, then followingthe North Platte to theSweetwater, up it to SouthPass and the across GreenRiver to the Bear insoutheast Idaho, and along itto the river’s U-turn wherethe soda springs gurgledfrom the ground. At thispoint the Trail, still runningnorth, crossed a low ridgeand dropped down to FortHall on Snake River, thencurved away, crossing theSnake to Fort Boise. Fromthere the Snake had to becrossed once more, andbeyond it the Trail traversedthe Blue Mountains andcame down to the ColumbiaRiver near the mouth of theUmatilla. This at first wascalled the end of the OregonTrail because most of thewagons were loaded hereonto rafts or barges to bef loated down to theWillamette Valley oppositeFor t Vancouver. Later, however, when a road wasextended another hundredmiles to permit loading belowthe rapids there, the OregonTrail was said to end at TheDalles.

The trek to Californiawas about twenty-twohundred miles, with SodaSprings and Fort Hall the

main turnoffs. These branchesled in a southwesterlydirection passing north of theGreat Salt Lake and following

the Humboldt River to the siteof future Carson City,Nevada, and on across theSierra Nevada by routes eithernorth or south of Lake Tahoedown into the SacramentoValley. It was because of thesesouthwestern forks that thisroute eventually becameknown as the Oregon-California Trail. It was onlyone of the major trails, ofcourse, and many more wereforged to bring people andproducts to the West Coast.
