WHPS Spell-a-thon coming soon! This year we are delighted to be hosting a school Spell-a-thon early in Term 3. It is an easy and effective way for our school to raise much needed funds to upgrade our K-2 playground and keep our technology department well stocked with new laptops, Ipads and Smartboards. We love that our kids will be learning while raising money and that they are directly involved in the fundraising process! Students in K-2 will be assigned up to 25 grade appropriate words and students in 3-6 will be assigned up to 50 grade appropriate words which they will learn how to spell during a two week period in weeks 2 & 3 next term. Testing will be on Thursday 4 August. This will be done across the school, with some wonderful parent helpers assisting with marking the papers on the day to return home. While students are practicing their words... or even during the up-coming holiday period, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, friends and neighbours will have the chance to support your child's education and our school, by making a general donation or pledge per word on their school Spell-a-thon pledge sheet (attached to the newsletter/ hard copy will be sent home in Term 3). After the Spell-a-thon on Thursday 4 August, students will return home with their completed test papers and begin to collect their pledge money to return to the school office by Friday 19 August. Prizes for highest sponsorship raised across the school and in each class; and as a whole class in K-2 and 3-6 will be awarded in the following weeks. We look forward to your support in this fun, educational fundraising event! Triple P Parenting Program… Coming to Wheeler Heights in Term 3!!

Wheeler Heights Public School is delighted to be able to offer to our community the opportunity to attend the Triple P Parenting Program. It is a free program which will be run over three evening sessions next term on Wednesday 10 August, Wednesday 17 August and Wednesday 24 August (Weeks 4,5 &6). Places are limited and require booking on 8425 8700. Triple P (Positive Parenting program) course focus: The course focuses on building positive relationships between parents and children. Description The Triple P positive parenting program is an international system with proven parenting solutions for parents. It is a system of easy to use, proven parenting strategies for parents to develop a positive and caring relationship with their child. It provides principles and techniques that can be used for different problems, such as tantrums, sleeping, bullying, and withdrawal. It has been running for 30 years and works well. Triple P Seminars address general parenting issues: why children tend to behave in certain ways under certain influences, and what they best respond to; dealing decisively and effectively with behaviours such as aggression and non-cooperation; recognising and managing situations that might be much less obvious such as sadness, anxiety, difficulty with separation and problems mixing with other children. REGIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL On Friday 24th June, four talented Wheeler Heights Public School athletes descended on Gosford Race Track for a chilly but exciting day of Cross Country Racing! There was rain on the track during the walk of the course but fortunately it cleared up in time for the races. Representing our school were Liam K, Saxon G and Josie J, competing at their first regional carnival, along with Lulu R, who had previous experience racing at Gosford. The competition was fierce and there were high quality athletes competing from all across the Northern Sydney area. Our students performed extremely well, demonstrating their Personal Best and doing Wheeler Heights proud. Their results are as follows:

• Liam K – 32nd

• Saxon G – 54th

• Josie J – 49th

• Lulu R – 8th (Reserve for State Carnival)

Congratulations on your awesome running, Cross Country Team! Holly Miller Cross Country Coordinator

BAND NEWS

FESTIVAL FRENZY: BANDS SHINE @PITTWATER HIGH

On Sunday 19 June, on a rainy winter’s day, our Senior and Intermediate Bands performed at Pittwater High School as part of the 2016 Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival. Both Bands’ performances were met with great appreciation from a very welcoming audience, augmented with discerning friendly observations from some highly qualified assessors. Congratulations to the bands for their stunning performances.

Extra special accolades go to our esteemed band captain Hamish S who courageously filled in on an unfamiliar percussion part at this festival without batting an eyelid. Great work Hamish – you really stepped up to the mark!

The following Saturday, 25 June (i.e. last Saturday) our Training Band also took centre stage at the same festival. What a great band, with a full and well balanced sound! It is hard to believe that these musicians only started on their instruments a few months ago. The word on the street is that this Training Band is one of the most balanced and switched-on going round. Keep up the good work.

Congratulations go to all our bands and their conductors, Cassie, Kelvin and Natalie, for their interstellar performances. This festival was good fun and an excellent learning experience for all our budding musicians. The bands sounded fantastic.

Special thanks also to Mr Scotter for coming along to the festival, in his spare time, to watch, help and support all our bands.

NEXT BAND COMMITTEE MEETING

Just a reminder that the next band committee meeting is to be held on Monday 8th August at 7.00pm in the School staff room. Please consider coming along to this meeting. We always need more helpers. Contrary to popular misconception, the meetings don’t drag on for hours (we all have families to go home to). Our band meetings provide a great chance to have a chat about the state of the bands and how to improve the processes, as well as to share responsibilities as evenly as possible.

With the school’s help, the band program is run entirely by volunteers. In coming months and years we will need more volunteers to help, as some of the existing committee members are getting a bit long in the tooth!

NEW WEBSITE, SAME FACES

Thanks to the patience and skills of an incredibly talented parent we have recently gone live with a new website: http://www.whpsband.com.au/ Please feel free to visit and have a browse. We’re sure you’ll agree, our new on-line presence has set the band program up for the next century!

It is intended that our new site will become the focal point of much of our band correspondence and form filling processes. We intend to keep it up to date with news and events, as they happen, so as to allow our parents and supporters 24 hour cross-platform access to all the latest band information. Watch this space, and keep watching!

TIMES ARE A CHANGING!

In case you haven’t heard, Miss Cassie White, conductor of our Senior and Intermediate Bands, will be leaving us at the end of this term. She has been offered a teaching position in Singapore which will be a wonderful opportunity for her to continue to grow and develop as a musical educator and conductor. We are very excited for her and fully support her decision. We wish her all the best for her future success and hope that she enjoys her time abroad.

This means that, commencing next term, Mrs Shauna Tyson will be conducting our Senior and Intermediate Bands. Shauna is an exceptionally qualified music teacher, and an accomplished French horn player and pianist. Shauna has been conducting children’s bands in our local area for over 15 years. She is young and enthusiastic, and will bring an energetic fresh approach to our band program. Shauna has filled in for Cassie on occasion over the last year or so and has always been very popular with the children and parents.

The Band Committee welcomes Shauna and offers her our full support and commitment!

28 June 2016 Wheeler Heights Public School 36 Veterans Parade Collaroy Plateau NSW 2097

Dear Staff and Students Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of the beautiful, caring students, staff and parents at Wheeler Heights Public School for raising a massive $3,026.60 in support of “Saving Chloe Saxby” by holding your own Rainbow for Research mufti day. The students were just lovely and I will remember forever how they called “Chloe, Chloe” and waved to her. Thank you for opening your hearts to us and making it such a special day with memories we will cherish forever. It is incredible to see so much support from the local community and beyond with Saving Chloe Saxby rainbow signs in shop windows and spreading all over the world! We have a way to go yet, but I believe with an amazing community like we have helping us, we can do it. Your contribution is supporting vital research into finding a cure for Chloe and other little children around the world just like her, suffering from Vanishing White Matter Disease, a devastating, rare, degenerative and terminal brain disease that affects mostly children. Your generosity and support is truly appreciated. If you would like to keep up to date with our progress and Chloe’s story, please “like” and follow Saving Chloe Saxby on Facebook, or alternatively Chloe’s website is www.chloesaxby.com.au.
