TIME TO START WEARING WARMER CLOTHES

As the weather is beginning to get colder, please remind your children to put their jumpers on and

keep themselves warm whilst at school. There are lots of little cold people running around with no

jumpers on in the mornings. School jumpers can be purchased from our Uniform shop.

SYDNEY SYMPHONY AT THE GLASSHOUSE

Our Performing Arts students had a wonderful time seeing the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at The

Glasshouse last week. It was a great reward for our wonderful kids who spend time practising hard

with their chosen instrument.

POSITIVE PLAYGROUND BEHAVIOUR

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the students who make our playground a beautiful place to be.

The values being shown each day with these students is a credit to our school and their families. I ask

Congratulations to both dance groups on your selection in this year’s Southern Network Dance Festival

at Camden Haven High on Wednesday 22nd June. Tickets for the festival are available from

Mrs Westcott and money needs to come to the front office in a labelled envelope please.

LNC CROSS COUNTRY, NETBALL & SOCCER

Congratulations to our LNC Cross Country team who travelled to Kempsey today to compete.

We are so proud of you and look forward to hearing about your day!

All the best to our Netballers who will challenge Hastings Public School on Monday 6th June! We will be

cheering for you. Thanks Mrs Myers for supporting these students.

Our girls and boys soccer teams will be competing on Tuesday 7th June as part of the Soccer Gala Day.

They have been training hard and we hope they have a great day. Thanks to Mr Collins and Miss Jean

for supporting these teams.

REPORT TIME

Teachers are currently very busy with their class assessments as they prepare to write school reports

for Semester 1. These will be sent home on Thursday 30th June. I encourage you to read through

your child’s report with your child and praise them for their results and the progress they have made

this semester. Teachers also love the opportunity to speak to you, so please feel free to make an

appointment to discuss your child’s report with the class teacher. This is a really important time for

you to gain knowledge of your child’s learning.

5/6SB VISIT TO MRS YORK’S GARDEN On Wednesday 1st June, 5-6SB were invited to do some tree planting at Mrs York’s Garden. When we arrived we met Mrs Davidson and she gave us the brief history of Mrs York’s Garden. We were interested to find out that Mrs York had once lived in Stewart Street in the 1960’s when she created lovely gardens from Town beach to Allman Hill. The area once contained colourful flower beds, walkways, a pond and a waterfall powered by a windmill. The garden was a great attraction to both locals and visitors. Unfortunately the gardens were not maintained over the years and became overgrown.

Now in 2016 The Friends of Mrs York’s Garden volunteers are turning it into a beautiful place once again. The volunteers come down every Wednesday to work in the garden, planting shrubs and native plants as well as mulching. A new path with stairs is currently being built

and we look forward to the outdoor learning which will be constructed soon. We enjoyed our morning at Mrs York’s Garden helping to plant native plants and learning some great gardening tips from all the volunteers. Jenaya Hourigan Meet Panchal

Port Macquarie Public School P&C will be conducting a fun run for the students as a major school fundraiser this term so we are asking for your support. The event will be held on Tuesday, 28th June 2016 (starting at 11.00am) with K-2 running on the school oval and Years 3-6 running at Town Beach. This is the P&C’s largest fundraising event for the year and all monies raised go to the school to provide additional resources for the students. All students that raise $30 or more go into the draw to win a voucher donated by The Sails Resort Port Macquarie, for overnight accommodation in a standard resort room and including a full buffet breakfast, valid until 16/12/16 and valued at $350.00. PREMIER’S DEBATING CHALLENGE

On Thursday 2nd June our debating team had our first round debate of the ‘Premier’s

Debating Challenge’ against Laurieton Public School. We had one hour to prepare the

debate. The topic was ‘That schools should teach more maths and science instead of art and

music.’ Laurieton was the affirmative team and we were

the negative team. The debate was very close with both

teams giving some exceptional arguments.

The winner of the debate was Port Macquarie Public

School . . . . . YAY!

We were very grateful to receive feedback from the

adjudicator and are excited about our next debate!

From the Chaplain . . .

Can you believe that we are nearly in June? For me life is so busy, it is difficult to keep up with all that I want to do, and I am only working part-time!! I can imagine it must be even more challenging for you with children at home or working full-time. One thing that our busyness does is prevent us from taking the time to think, to reason from cause to effect - we want to survive and deal with issues in the quickest ways but this often causes us to react or act impulsively or expediently (according to our own interest rather than what is right). When I was a child at school if someone misbehaved they would be yelled at and called out to the front of the class to hold their hand out for the teacher to hit with a ruler. Sometimes children would be ‘shamed’ or ‘blamed’ in front of the whole class. Unsurprisingly those children often only learnt to fear, distrust or resent their teachers. Today our teachers try to help young people to think about their negative behaviours and recognise their need to change them in order to work co-operatively with their class. How do we manage negative behaviours at home? Steve Biddulph in his book “More Secrets of Happy Children” blessed me with the realisation that we can give our children space and time to think about what they have done wrong and to come up with a better ‘deal’. He calls it “stand and think and then deal”. Yesterday as I was looking after my four year old grandson, I thought I’d try ‘stand and think and then deal’ (my grandson normally receives a ‘1….2….3 warning,’ and then a ‘time-out’ for misbehaving). We enjoyed a lovely day together but towards the end of the day, perhaps he was getting tired and I had the opportunity to try it out. I told him quietly that it was time for him to ‘stand and think’ and placed him in a corner where he would not be distracted; then I stood near him waiting until he had time to think. When I noticed that he looked sorry for what he had done, I asked him what he thought about what he had done. “Not good Omama,” he said, then looking up at me “Sorry Omama I braked your straw”. I said “Ollie, I forgive you. Please don’t break my things” and gave him a hug. He repeated “Sorry Omama, okay.” I pray that rather than rushing on with our many jobs for the day, we too will take time to “stand and think” before we “deal” with our children and also to ‘stand and think’ about the direction of our own lives . The Port Macquarie Junior Rugby Union are

hosting a night of Rugby Union for girls on

the 3rd June at Stuarts Park starting at 5pm.

James Perrett from NSW Rugby will be

teaching skills and training for all skill

levels. Girls aged from 4 to 18 years are

welcome.

Selections for the MNC team will most

likely occur on this night for a tournament

in Coffs Harbour in July for U14’s, U16’s

and maybe U18’s.
