Principal’s Note
Welcome to a very different Week 6 and a COVID
shortened newsletter!
Term 3 was sailing along smoothing until we were
plunged, very quickly, into COVID-19 restrictions on the
weekend. Unfortunately for us at JPS, the worsening
situation around the state, and the rapid and
unpredictable spread of this deadly virus, means the
continuity of learning for our students is once again
impacted. It is also very concerning the number of
children being impacted by COVID-19 this time round.
Many students have made significant progress with
their Literacy and Numeracy knowledge and skills this
year. We have implemented many new and targeted
initiatives through our Strategic Improvement Plan (SIP),
specifically to lift the learning of all students. Rigorous
assessment practices, explicit, personalised learning and
evidence-based interventions are having a huge impact
on learning growth K-6.
Emma is a dedicated and hard-working Year 5 student who consistently strives to produce quality learning. She is
an engaged and enthusiastic learner who thrives on feedback in an attempt to improve. She adheres to our PBL core values and displays leadership qualities when required. Well done Emma and keep up the great work.
JPS is extremely fortunate to have Mrs Reimer
supporting our staff and students in the Instructional
Leader role this year. Mrs Reimer’s curriculum expertise
has been invaluable as staff build capacity to explicitly
plan and implement point in time learning programs.
Mrs Reimer working with Jaida to develop reading fluency and comprehension earlier this year
Next year, the Early Action for Success (EAfS) initiative
will be replaced as the Department of Education moves
to a system-wide approach that puts a greater focus on
what works best for students, using evidence-led
principles. The goal is to ensure that all children and
young people have a strong foundation in literacy and
numeracy, deep content knowledge and confidence in
their ability to learn, adapt and be responsible citizens.
This new approach has 5 new priorities for improving
literacy and numeracy that are underpinned by strong
evidence-based research, providing a shared
understanding and accountability for student literacy
and numeracy improvement.
• Priority 1: There is a whole school and system
approach to literacy and numeracy achievement
from preschool to Year 12
• Priority 2: School leadership is focused on
improving student literacy and numeracy
• Priority 3: All teachers use effective practices to
improve student literacy and numeracy
outcomes through curriculum
• Priority 4: Schools and systems use data to
inform literacy and numeracy improvement
• Priority 5: Families are supported as partners in
their children’s literacy and numeracy
development
As a component of this new approach, Literacy and
Numeracy leadership will be strengthened in schools. All
schools will have access to ‘Lead Specialists’ in literacy
and numeracy across primary and secondary school
clusters who will deliver professional learning and

expert guidance across the system. These roles have an
explicit focus on providing evidence-based support to
school leaders and teachers to improve practice whilst
embedding evaluation for ongoing improvement at a
school and system level.
Additionally, new, permanent and dedicated Assistant
Principal, Curriculum and Instruction, will be recruited in
public schools with K-6 enrolments, including JPS. The
Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Instruction position
is a leadership role dedicated to ensuring that literacy
and numeracy knowledge and skills are embedded in
curriculum and assessment; high quality teaching
practices are enhanced; and the capabilities of middle
leaders are strengthened in literacy and numeracy
instruction.
This new approach to Literacy and Numeracy aligns with
our SIP strategic directions and initiatives and the new
priorities and staffing components will further
strengthen the already fantastic teaching and learning
that occurs across classrooms every day at JPS.
Attendance
Weeks 1-5 attendance awards were ready to hand out
this week until things changed dramatically. These will
be presented when we return to normal schooling. This
term there have been a number of students/families
battling illness and this has affected our attendance
rates slightly. Despite this, 65 students are still at or
above our attendance target. Even more pleasing, 39 of
these students have 100% attendance for the term thus
far. Congratulations to the following students for their
amazing 100% attendance this term:
WOMBAD: Harry, Evelyn Kaiwen
GUGABURRA: Avah, Allan, Evangeline, Jaida, Mahalia,
Claire
BAGAL: Savannah, Veronice, Jasey, Callie, Mi Yeon,

Scarlett is an eager Kindergarten learner who is thriving in Wombad this year. Scarlett is a friendly and happy student
who gets along with her peers at all times. Scarlett loves playing with the new toys in the sandpit. Congratulations Scarlett and keep up the great learning; particularly your
wonderful reading.

Zone Athletics Carnival
Fortunately, a number of students were able to attend
the recent Cootamundra Zone Athletics Carnival held in
Temora. On a cold and gloomy day, Mrs Leonard

Postponed Riverina Schools Sports
Association events in Term 3
In line with the growing concern around COVID-19, the
following Riverina Schools Sports Association events
have been postponed:
Riverina Primary Athletics Carnival – Friday 20
August 2021
Riverina Secondary Athletics Carnival – Friday 3
September 2021
With the current COVID-19 restrictions, and issues in
Regional NSW and on the border, we are mindful these
events require both travel and accommodation for a
number of families and staff and we want to provide
students, families and staff with as much notice as
possible.
A decision regarding the rescheduling of events will be
made at a later date in-line with NSW Health advice. The
RSSA remain committed to providing opportunities to
students across the association in Term 4.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Last Friday the students participated in
their PBL reward activity, Mini Olympics
coordinated by our Stage 3 students. The
students participated with great
enthusiasm in the modified sports and
games and thoroughly enjoyed their ice
blocks at the end. Thanks to Mr Cox and
his class for organising the afternoon.
Photos of all the action appear on
following pages.

sentences that made sense-well done Claire!
Mahalia has also been working very persistently to improve her writing skills. Her learning goal was to write
longer sentences. Mahalia has successfully written a series of simple and compound sentences as a paragraph-super
writing Mahalia!
Evangeline was very excited about her learning progress. She was working on finding technical vocabulary to

COVID-19/Learning from Home Update
Extension of stay-at-home rules for regional NSW to 28 August
Due to ongoing concerns about community transmission, stay-at-home rules in place for regional NSW will be extended until at least 12.01am on 28 August. This means that NSW schools continue to operate under current restrictions at least until Saturday 28 August.
There will be very minimal supervision on site at Junee Public School (Monday 23rd – 27th Friday) for those students who cannot be educated at home; for example, if their parent or carer is an essential worker and you have no other option.
Learning packs will be placed at the school gate, in class containers, for families to collect from 9.00am, Monday 23rd August. They will remain there until 3.00pm. Containers will be put back out on Tuesday morning from 9.00am for families unable to collect them on Monday. There is at least 2 weeks learning in your child’s pack (Weeks 7&8).
If you are working from home, and your child is able to be educated from home, please keep them at home. School is open for students of essential workers (please check NSW Health website).
Drop off and pick up is via Lorne Street entrance only. No student should be at school if unwell. Under no circumstances are parents/carers to enter school buildings.
Please contact school by phone if necessary. During these restrictions, the breakfast club and lunch orders will not be available. Updates will be provided throughout the week if necessary. All communication between home/school will be via Facebook, Skoolbag and email.
Stay safe, well and have a great fortnight.

Junee Public School Lego Club
Junee Public School’s ‘Lego Club’ provides a unique opportunity for our students to engage in creative play during lunchtimes.
Through Lego, students explore the possibilities of creativity, problem solving and challenge-based engineering activities while having fun! Students can choose to work independently, with a partner or small group to design and create their Lego inventions.
Our Lego Club has a variety of kits available for students to explore and build from both the popular Friends and City ranges. Students can build on their own, with a friend or in a small group. There is also a communal tub of Lego that students may use.
The Lego Club is open every Monday, Wednesday and
Friday at lunchtime in the Hall. All students may use the
Lego Club; however, students in Kindergarten and Year
1 must have an older buddy to work with.
What role does Lego play in early learning
development?
1. Fine motor skill development
2. Teamwork & communication
3. Resilience & perseverance
4. Problem-solving
5. Creative thinking
