Term 2 - Week 9 24th June 2019 students become confident and part of the whole school routines and expectations. Achieving our Learning Goals Every student at our school sets goals for their learning. We celebrate the achievement of these goals and congratulate students as winners in their learning journey every day. The pride and commitment demonstrated by our students is encouraging and part of the very special culture of high expectations we have built here at BPS. Congratulations to Elijah, Bailey and Jyi from K-6R. Elijah can make groups of items and use skip counting to find totals. Jyi can use his knowledge of arrays to find totals of hidden items. Bailey can count from any number up to 120. Jahkobi, Haylie and Aliona from K/1S have also achieved their goals. Jahkobi can count to 10 and verbalise his needs. Haylie can count to 100 and Aliona recognizes 20 letters and sounds and can also count to 100. Tiana in 3/4G can count by 10s off the decade. (no pic) Taj in KC can read level 3 texts independently and Ehmjay in KC can write his name. CONGRATULATIONS to 3/4G 3/4G and Miss Goodman have become our model ‘attendance’ class this year! We extend a huge congratulations to 3/4G who continue to log numerous days of 100% class attendance. Last week, 3/4G had 5 days in a row with NO ONE ABSENT. They now have a total of 29 days, this year, when the class had 100% in attendance. Miss Goodman is obviously doing something great! Well done to all of you, and keep up the great work, 3/4G families. Save the Spring Fair Date - Saturday 14th September Our Spring Fair is sneaking up slowly. Please put it on your calendars and start saving some pocket money. It is a huge, family fun day with rides, car show, side show Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome to a damp Week 9. The weather has disrupted our Athletics Carnival dates but we have a backup date planned already. Our Infants Carnival (Years K-2) will go ahead tomorrow – Tuesday. Please share this information in the community and be sure to explain that the facilitator position has a number of essential requirements: Cert III or equivalent Knowledge of DoE’s Aboriginal Education policies Current driver’s licence Working With Children Check Aboriginality Kim will continue in a support role in The Nest, and work alongside the new facilitator as they begin to run the playgroups, support HeadStart, organise parent information sessions, liaise with agencies and more. Infants Area – Update When visiting BPS, you will still see activity taking place around the Infants area. We have had painting works done and a new roof installed. The buildings are still surrounded by some fencing and scaffolding. The company working on the site has been fantastic, but the wet weather has halted things a little. Could all parents/carers please organise to drop off and pick up students away from this area for a few more days, to avoid congestion. There is not enough room for our usual pedestrian traffic flow! Please organise a space at the front of the school to meet or drop off, or even outside the gates or at your car. Kindergarten News Kindergarten staff have expressed that our Kindergarten students are settled and very confident with school routines. We believe they have been at school long enough now for parents to start arranging drop off and pickup times without having to wait with them until the bell goes in the morning, or being here early, near the classrooms at home time. activities, food vans and so much more. Our school oval looks a lot like a local show – don’t miss out. Please come along to upcoming P&C meetings if you would like to find out how to be involved in this massive event on our fundraising calendar. Alternatively, please speak to:

Ms Doheney if you have a small business that may be interested in having a stall on the day

Ms De Fazio if you are a food or drink vendor

Ms Calcraft if your local club or organisation would like a stall, to have advertising, or to be a sponsor of the event

Mrs Carla Balsar from the P&C if you have a business and you would like to be a corporate sponsor of the event and enjoy our promotion and advertising

Ms Walsh if you have a vehicle for our car/bike/vehicle display. We would love to have vintage, street, hot rod, trucks, bikes and much more.

Athletics Carnival POSTPONED The school Athletics Carnivals are fast approaching. The years 3-6 carnival has been postponed due to the weather and will be on this Thursday 27th June. The K-2 carnival will still be held tomorrow, Tuesday 25th June. We would love it if everyone could attend. We are also looking for any parent volunteers for the day. If you would like to volunteer, please contact the school office. P&C Meeting Our monthly P&C meeting was held last Thursday afternoon, 20th June. Four hard working parents came along as well as community and staff members. The team will be proposing some new uniform items soon. They will seek community feedback before including these additions to our school kit. Keep your eyes on this newsletter and the school facebook page for more information. Our P&C reported on two grant applications which were successful. Carla Balsar went along to Stockland Management Office last week to receive a grant of $1000 towards the playground establishment for our Nest. And Scott and Carla Balsar went along on Saturday night to the Bomaderry Charity Trust dinner at the RSL club to receive $2,500 from the Trust. These funds will go towards our long term plan of constructing extra covered walkways to join the Infants buildings. Fantastic news and a very big thank you to our P&C. Thank you also to Stockland and the Bomaderry Charity Trust. The P&C also discussed future school events and activities including; a ‘nude food’ day to be introduced where our school community strives to pack all lunches with NO packaging. This has been a popular addition to

many schools, including many in our local area. Students are beginning to analyse the rubbish we generate through packaging and discuss its long term effects on the environment. We would love your feedback on this idea and of course welcome all suggestions for great foods to pack and good reusable containers to use. Note – fruit is often packaged in its own wrapping! Ready to go.

NAIDOC WEEK Next Week We will celebrate NAIDOC Week at BPS next week.

The 2019 NAIDOC theme is – Voice. Treaty. Truth.

Let’s work together for a shared future. NAIDOC

Week celebrations are held across Australia each July

to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous

communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.

The week is a great opportunity to participate in a

range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal

and Torres Strait Islander community. NAIDOC

originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders

Day Observance Committee’. This committee was

once responsible for organising national activities

during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since

become the name of the week itself.

We would be pleased to have as many community

members as possible come along next Tuesday

for our 10am Assembly and flag raising ceremony.

Following the assembly, community members are

invited to join us for a light luncheon event in the

hall. We will celebrate NAIDOC week together,

community, parents/carers and staff. Please note:

siblings and children attending with family members

are very welcome, but our school students will have

their lunch with their teachers as per usual school

routines.

Students will enjoy an art exhibition, Doing Things Together Day and mufti day during the week – more information coming soon. Ms Dionne Hanbidge

Public Speaking This term all Stage 2 and 3 students have been working hard on their public speaking skills. All students were asked to prepare a speech choosing a topic that focused on multiculturalism. Each class held an in-class final in which 2 students were selected for the next stage. Last Wednesday these students took part in our stage Multicultural Public Speaking competition school final. They all did a fantastic job on their prepared speeches. The teachers were ‘wowed’ by their efforts and achievement. From this final 2 students were selected to move forward and represent the local region. This is taking place tomorrow at our school. Congratulations to Skye, Jaxon and Amber from 4/5/6B and Chloe from 3/4S who will be representing BPS at this final tomorrow. We wish them all the best of luck! Ms Bobyk

Stage 1 Booderee National Park Excursion On Tuesday 18th June, Stage 1 visited Booderee National Park. When we arrived at the Botanical Gardens, we ate our munch and crunch and waited for the park rangers to come. The park rangers took us for a bush tucker walk around the Botanical Gardens. The first tree the rangers showed us was the lemon-scented tea tree. This was my favourite because it smelled nice and we found out that it was used to keep mosquitoes away from campsites. We also saw swamp lily’s that were used to treat blue bottle stings and bracken ferns that you could use to treat bull ant bites. After our bush tucker walk, we discussed the importance of preserving significant places in our local area, so that future generations can enjoy them too. Mila 1/2G
