PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome back to Hillsborough Public School for the 2020 school year! We are all very excited to see our students return from their holiday break and we trust that our families had a wonderful time with their children. We have heard about some fantastic holidays both internationally and domestically and even some great times had right here in the beautiful Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas.
Welcome Kindergarten!
On Monday we welcomed the youngest members of our school community as they commenced their very first day of Kindergarten.
We are so proud of our kindergarten students, who have settled in so beautifully. Thanks must be extended to our Kindergarten Buddies for the care and attention they have provided to our kindy students.
Mrs Hewitt has reported that her students are already picking up the routines of school life. Well done kindy!
Staffing Update
We are thrilled to welcome Mrs Ebony White to our school. Mrs White is teaching 5/6W, replacing Miss Ridgeway, who is continuing her teaching duties in the UK. Mrs White comes to us with a wealth of teaching experience from Tarro PS and Edgeworth PS. Mrs White is also taking on the role of our PSSA Sports Coordinator and she is currently organising our school swimming carnival.
Mrs Helen Styan will be working with us in the library until the end of Week 4, replacing Mrs Norton while she is on leave.
Mr Cameron Selby will be teaching class 4/5P for the next two weeks, commencing on Monday, 10 February 2020 while Mrs Pike is on leave.
Parent Information Sessions
Our teachers have sent home notes about their parent information sessions, most of which are happening next week. Please see the list of classes and their times below.
Stage 3
I am delighted to give you a sneak peek into some innovative teaching practices happening in Stage 3 this year. Mr Scott and Mrs White have opened the doors of their classrooms and are working in a team teaching situation. This allows for explicit instruction and a roving teacher, assisting students at their point of need.
In addition to this, Mr Scott, Mrs White and Mrs Pike are committed to ensuring that all of our Stage 3 students have the opportunity to work together as often as possible. To ensure this can occur, we have provided additional teachers to Stage 3 math activities three times a week as well as welcomed the Year 5 from 4/5P into the double room for the teaching of Stage specific content in Creative and Performing Arts, Science, History, Geography and Personal Development, Health and physical Education.

Safety around the school
Could I take this time to remind our community that the staff car park is strictly for staff only between the hours of 8am and 4pm. Please do not enter the car park inside these hours, unless you have sought permission from me as the site manager of the school.
Additionally, we ask that parents and carers abide by the rules of the Kiss and Ride Zone. LMCC have advised us they will be back patrolling School Zones starting Term 1. Further in the newsletter you will see a flyer for School Zone offences.
Swimming Carnival
Our Swimming Carnival will take place on Friday, 14 February 2020 at Charlestown Swimming Pool. It is expected that all students in Year 3 to 6 attend the carnival. Year 2 students, who turn 8 and are competitive swimmers are also invited to attend. Please return your permission note to the office as soon as possible so that we can finalise numbers for buses and pool entry.
Canteen Name
Our canteen has a new name. You can now find all the delicious and healthy food at Hilly’s! Thank you to all of our students who entered the competition to name the canteen. We just loved your suggestions (Mrs B’s Café was my favourite!).
After a busy couple of weeks, I hope that you take the time to recharge over the weekend so that all of our fabulous students are ready to resume their fun, friendships and learning on Monday.
Let’s work together to make 2020 the best year ever at HPS.
