Term 1 Week 10 30 March 2020 Dear Parents and families,

Please note the school remains open. Students who attend school this week will be supervised while they access content though google classrooms.

For those who have already joined their students up to their Google Classroom, you may have noticed that these pages are currently a bit bare. This morning though, between 9 and 10am all teachers will be going live and logging onto their Google Classroom! Teachers are excited to begin connecting with students during this time via the chat feature found on the home screen. There will be no conferencing via video or audio so if its PJ day at your house no one will be any the wiser!

At the moment there is a large number of students who are yet to log on and join their Google Classroom. Whilst we understand that during this time accessing this platform may not be feasible however we do encourage students to set themselves up as soon as possible so teachers can begin to support students with their At Home Learning journey. The more students we have on utilising this platform during the initial stages of implementation will also allow us and families to troubleshoot any problems or usability issues that may arise.

Don’t forget the school’s website has a link to our At Home Learning page where you can find lots of information including how to access Google Classroom and lots of advice for distance learning. Here you can also request information, support and for your child’s teacher to contact you.

We have had a few queries as to exactly what Google Classroom actually is. One easy way to think of it is as just like the students physical classroom but online. It acts as a way to deliver content and facilitate communication between teachers and students. Please note though in these early stages teachers will only be online during the check in times of between 9 and 10am, and then again at 12 – 1.30pm as per suggested schedule found in packs and under the Week 10 and 11 tab on our At Home Learning section on our school’s website.

While teaching and learning is our core business and it will always be so incredibly important, I'd like you to consider some other things as well.

Our children can see, hear and feel everything we do. They are just as scared as we are at the moment. They do not always have the benefit of wisdom or life's perspective so this situation of constant tension and anxiety will be affecting them in ways we may not yet understand. It sounds exciting to have 'weeks' off school, but the reality is their isolation from school, their friends, their teachers and their sense of TPS belonging will be hard for them. You may see some behaviours emerging; more meltdowns, opposition and tantrums.... but PLEASE consider;

1. What our children need most at this time is to

feel secure, loved and cared for. Their mental

health far more important than their academic

progress.

2. Even though we have given you a suggested

timetable and a lot of work for your children to

do, know that you may like to abandon that

perfect schedule and go for a walk instead,

bake a cake, do a science experiment

together, paint pictures or have a discussion

about nature.

3. Take time to stop. Just let you child know it is

going to be ok.

4. Please do not be concerned about them

regressing in their learning- the most

important thing is keeping them reading and

keep reading to them.

5. Teachers are experts at ascertaining 'where'

students are at; we will do this as soon as we

see them again, it will all be ok. Children

nationally and even globally will be in the

same situation.

6. Please do not create added pressure for your

children in terms of the school work...how they

feel during this time is so important...they will

remember how they felt at this time... not what

we said or did…but what they felt... please

allow that to be the important thing.

7. We are here... teachers are connecting with

students daily and we are here for parents

who need support too.

8. Take care of yourselves as parents and

carers. As I said in a previous post, you are

not trained teachers, nor are you expected to

be. Please expect hiccups with the

technology (especially initially) and contact

your child's teacher or the school when your

child needs help with something.

Your children and our students, the future citizens of this wonderful community, are so precious to us. In this time of uncertainty we can collectively as a community try hard to make this time as positive as we can.

As the Premier has reiterated, schools are open but parents are encouraged to keep their children home if they can.

And lastly, thank you to our amazing staff who go above and beyond to make sure that the wellbeing and learning of students at TPS is always their utmost priority.

3/4 S

What an awesome start to the year at Tuggerawong! I am absolutely loving working with and getting to know my team, students, parents and carers. Thank you to those who have come to meet me and to everyone for welcoming me into this incredible school and community.

Thank you to the amazing families who have sent in supplies for our classroom such as hand soap, paper towel, hand sanitiser and tissues. I really appreciate your help, especially with everything going on and the extra hygiene precautions we have been taking.

In 3/4 S we have been learning about and practicing a growth mindset to help us easily rebound from setbacks and challenges.

A growth mindset is … “focusing on helpful, positive words and thoughts to help motivate you to achieve, rather than thinking bad thoughts and doubting yourself when you are doing something hard” - Connor T, 3/4 S

To assist us in reaching and growing we each set a weekly ‘goal for growth’. We then come together to discuss and assess our progress at the end of the week. These goals are something that the students choose for themselves that they would like to improve on. They can be an academic, personal, social or behavioural goal.

The small fraction of 3/4 S students that remained at school last week have been enjoying learning all about fractions!

3/4 S students have absolutely loved the hands on learning and have been busy creating their own equivalent fraction charts to assist them in solving problems.

We have been having so much fun challenging our neighbours in 3/4 P to some fraction games that we created. The students gave it their all but Miss Stretton remains the champion for now!

I am so proud of how responsible and sensible our 3/4 S team have been over the past few weeks. They have been making sure that everyone stays safe by washing hands, wiping down devices and surfaces and practicing social distancing.

All of the students have put in a tremendous effort over the past 9 weeks and should be extremely proud of themselves. I cannot wait to see what else we achieve together!

I hope everyone has a happy and safe week! :)
