BUILDING BRIDGES KPPS Art Show 2015
NOTES SENT HOME: Interschool Chess
Tournament
2
All of the students had to work on a piece of art work to display in the art
exhibition. The art work has to resemble the topic which was building bridges,
which didn’t mean the structure but connecting cultures and diversity.
Some classes did cultural masks, totem poles, rain sticks, hands coming together for
friendship and paintings. The Learning Centre was able to make some flags of
different cultures. Tony Harrison was amazed that every student was able to
produce a piece of art work. For the art show Tony Harrison the CEO and the
student leaders were able to open the art show so that everyone could enjoy.
This year the art show was a fantastic success. All of the parents were proud of
their children. Part of the reason it was a success was because we raised over
$3000! The art show is great because students get to put their build-up creative
energy into a lovely piece of art.

FAREWELL and THANKS!!
Way back in 1997 a young, enthusiastic and bubbly new teacher took up
residence in the Learning Centre. 18 years later we say farewell and
happy retirement to Ruth Matthews. During that time Ruth has led the
team in LC1 working with the older students in the unit.
Ruth took on the challenge of learning the Principles of Conductive
Education and ensuring CE was the key program in her classroom.
Providing an age appropriate curriculum was always a priority for Ruth as
was music. A variety of student focused music would emanate from her
room as would the melodies from her guitar and her superb voice. Many
of us will remember forever the songs she has sung at Festive Night and
Kidman Celebrates.
Over the years Ruth hasn’t just been a pivotal player in our
Learning Centre. Ruth has taught in mainstream classes,
provided non instruction music lessons and managed our
mainstream special education team. Ruth’s been our OH&S
officer, fire warden and been a part of many staff
development teams. Ruth has also beaten cancer twice over
the last 18 years.
Ruth has always been an advocate for students with
disabilities, supported parents and their needs and provided
fun and laughter to our school. We hope Ruth enjoys the
next exciting chapter in her life. We thank her for the many
years of dedicated service she has provided to KPPS.

P1’s Assembly was dedicated to raising awareness about the
benefits of laughter. Money raised from today’s event will be

Great Example of Team Work I wanted to make an acknowledgement of the efforts made by the Community Awareness Action Team and their helpers. You all did yourself and Kidman Park Primary School proud, with the running of the Nepal Fundraiser Bake Sale.
I would also like to thank those parents/students who baked the awesome food provided on the day (I know the Mars Bar slices were a real hit with my family). Lastly thank you to all who purchased food from the sale.
All this contributed to the success of the day. Monies raised will go to such a worthy cause. This just proves that one person can make a difference, but look what can be achieved by two or more.
I am available at the school on Mondays and Fridays. You can contact me at the front office by leaving a note (in the green mail box) or by email: [email protected]

STRINGS ENSEMBLE WORKSHOP
On the 8th April, a group of our students
learning strings participated in a Strings
Ensemble Workshop at Fulham North
Primary.
SAPSASA FOOTBALL CARNIVAL On Monday 25th of May to Friday the 29th of May I participated in
the SAPSASA football carnival at Barrat Reserve West Beach,
which had highly skilled year 6/7 football players. There were 41
districts of South Australia split into 4 divisions. My team, Western District, was in division 2. I got
selected to participate in the SAPSASA football carnival from a group of 80 players. I attended 4
trials over a period of 4 weeks and at the end of the trials the 80 players were reduced to a squad
of 24. After the trials the squad of 24 trained together for 2 weeks. At the carnival we played two
games every day from Monday to Thursday and played our final game on Friday. Out of the 9
games Western Districts won 6 and lost 3. I enjoyed playing football all week and making new
friends. My favourite parts of the SAPSASA football carnival were playing against some very skilful
players and getting an award for being one of the best and fairest on ground for the whole week.

On Thursday 28th May the Middle Years classes went to Come Out Performance, ‘Masquerade’ at Her Majesty’s Theatre.
Masquerade - A wondrous world of riddles and hidden treasures.
Presented by State Theatre Company and Griffin Theatre Company in association with Adelaide Festival Centre and Windmill Theatre. In a wondrous world of riddles and hidden treasure, bumbling Jack Hare is on a race against time to deliver a message of love from the Moon to the Sun. Far, far away in a world just like ours, a mother cheers her son Joe with the tale of Jack Hare’s adventure. But when Jack’s mission goes topsy-turvy, Joe and his mum must come to the rescue, and the line between the worlds of myth and reality becomes blurred forever.

T THE INVISIBLE TORRENS EXCURSION by Jade & Sienna Room 9 On Monday, Room 9 and Room 12 went on an excursion. It was called “The Invisible
Torrens”. We went on this excursion because it’s part of the Children’s Come Out
Festival.
First of all, we went to the Festival Centre for an exciting “Silent Disco”. We put on
headphones and got to choose from three channels. When you took your headphones
off everyone was dancing and singing and no one was shy. It was good to see everyone
happy and having fun.
After our boogying at the silent disco, we went for a long and tiring walk to the SAMHRI
building (the cheese grater), but it was worth it. When we walked in all you heard was
“WOW!” It was such an amazing building. The atmosphere was awesome with the
offices and couches. There were tourists from all over the world and you could see the
excitement on their faces.
We went into a conference room which was set up for our activities. Firstly, we went to
a table full of 20x magnification microscopes. There was another table full of objects to
look at closely. Our first activity with the microscopes was looking to find the initials of
the person who designed the echidna on the 5 cent piece. They were SD. Then we
could pick anything from the table. The best was the peacock feather and the leaf
skeleton. It was cool to see things when they are so close up. It’s like a whole new
world for our eyes!
The next activity was just as good. There were two tables full of pictures that had been
zoomed in, like bacteria and viruses. We chose three pictures then copied them on a
piece of paper. We could either colour them in with pencil, or paint them. It was good
to see everyone’s creative side.
Last but not least, we had a massive piece of paper and then there were microscopic
projections on the paper. It was hard to draw the water boatman especially when
they’re moving everywhere. It was kind of gross in a away because of their transparent
skin. You could see what they had for lunch! When it was finished, it was so scribbly,
but you could still see the bugs and microscopic images.
It was sad when we left, no-one wanted to leave. We had heaps of fun and we saw
things that we don’t usually see, or think of. The best excursion EVER! We’re sure we’ll
remember it!

LES KADINSKY INSPIRED ART
In art we have begun to look at famous artists. One artist we have looked at is Wassily
Kandinsky. He liked to paint using lots of colours and shapes. One of his most famous
paintings was the Concrete Circles painting. We have created our own inspired Kadinsky
paintings.
FAIRY TALES
In U6 this term we have been learning about fairy tales. We have been looking at
different fairy-tale characters, where they live and the kind of problems they face. In
every fairy tale we have read there has always been a villain that causes trouble like the
Big Bad Wolf. After reading lots of stories we put on our detective hats to try and catch
the villains. To help catch the fairy-tale criminals we created a wanted poster for them.

This term Foundation students have been discussing community
helpers. We have been locating local, fire, police and ambulance
stations using google earth. We were lucky enough to have Kirsten
Surch come in and talk to us about her role as a police officer. We
were able to see some of the equipment used and see the uniform
police officers wear. We had lots of questions to ask Kirsten.
We enjoyed learning about;
The team you work with
How the radio worked.
How to become a police officer
The uniform
Different types of police vehicles and transport.
We thank you so much Kirsten for coming in to talk to us.

JOINT LEARNING IN P2 AND P4! Since the beginning of the year P2 and P4 have worked on similar unit plans in some learning
areas. However, this term has been very different and the work the teachers (Mr. Gibbins
and Ms. Holmes) have been doing has been joint; not only behind the scenes, but their
classes have collaborated too!
P2 is a 6/7 class and P4 is a 5/6 class meaning that all students fit under the category of
Middle Years learners (Years 5-7). Working as a ‘team of learners’ has enabled students to
work with more of their peers, receive work which is closer linked to their ability and work
on a range of skills desirable for all 21st century learners. Students have the opportunity to
sign up to workshops to learn specific skills and some control in choosing their own learning
at times.
Students have been working very well in their new groups and have been working in
different groups for different subjects. This can get confusing at times to begin with but our
students have done a fantastic job of embracing the new routines and we are starting to see
some impressive work as a result. We are excited about the work that will be produced in
the near future!
Here’s what some students had to say:
“My favourite thing about working with p2 and p4 is that we get to meet new people and get
collaborate with others from the another class” –Emma M.
“My favourite thing is being able to work with older people that are able to help me
and being able to work with my friends :)” – Siobhan C.
“I have received good feedback from Ms. Holmes and have been able to be a leader as a Year
7 when working in small groups” –
Wendy L
