Term 4 Week 2 16 October 2017

Welcome back to Term 4! I can’t believe it is already Week 2. If all the weeks go as fast as Week 1 it will be Christmas before we know it. There are a number of important events this term so be sure to keep the school calendar (attached with this newsletter) on your fridge to keep you informed of upcoming events.

Staffing Update Mr McNally has been selected to be an official at the State Athletics Carnival this week (Wednesday and Thursday). Mrs Andrews will be replacing Mr McNally during this time. Mrs Sutherland will replace Mrs Andrews on 3/4D on Thursday.

Mrs Houison will be the class teacher for 2/3R for the remainder of the year. Thank you to Mrs Hodgson-Bower for allowing 2/3R to have a great start to Term 4.

Mrs Cashin has commenced maternity leave. This is a very exciting time for Mrs Cashin and her family. We wish them all the best for this next chapter in their lives. Miss Smith will replace Mrs Cashin for the remainder of the year.

A Few Reminders Under no circumstances are parents or older siblings not attending TPS to use the student toilets. This is for safety reasons. If you require a toilet please come to the administration building (office) and see Mrs Quinn or Mrs Pollock. There is a toilet at the office for you to use.

The office is a staff only area excluding the foyer. Parents are not allowed to enter the staffroom or the back door of the office to speak to teachers. If you require teacher assistance or would like to organise a meeting please do so at the front desk

Please do not enter or exit the school via the school car park. Last week on two separate occasions I saw some of our students entering and exiting the school this way. This is very dangerous as cars come and go on a regular basis. Families accessing OOSH need to be accompanied by an adult when walking through the car park during early morning and late afternoon pickups.

If bringing an animal to school you need the permission of the principal. This includes bringing in pets for news.

Attendance Regular attendance is of the upmost importance. When a child misses school it breaks the link in their social and academic development. Whilst I understand that some absences are unavoidable due to illness it is imperative that where possible students attend school each day.

Those students who have fallen below state targets will receive a phone call or letter home this week. It is a school’s responsibility to monitor attendance. It is a parent’s responsibility to inform the school of any absence in a timely manner. Your cooperation with this matter is greatly appreciated. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you wish to discuss your child’s / children’s attendance. Intention to apply for Year 7 entry to a selective high school in 2019 Selective high schools cater for high achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and

social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2019, you need to apply soon. You will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address). Detailed instructions on how to apply online were made available from 10 October 2017 at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/publicschools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity- classes/year-7. Applications close 13 November 2017.

Early Stage 1 KS Welcome to term 4! KS students have returned to school ready to learn. This week we had a visit from some lifeguards to talk to us about safety at the beach. It was great to participate in such an important informative session. The children all responded well to the topic. Maybe you could ask your child about some dangerous animals found at the beach, where the safest place to swim is and what does the white/black flag represent.

Our excursion to Blackbutt Reserve was fantastic. Thank you so much Renee for your help on the day! The children were awesome and really enjoyed the day. They got to see koalas, peacocks, Mr Blue, Clyde and lots of other great stuff. Some questions about the excursion that you could ask are; What type of wombat is found where we live? What can happen to a lizard if it is attacked? What do koalas have two of? and, What does nocturnal mean?

As you are aware, Mrs Cashin has left us to get ready for the arrival of her bubby. Miss Smith will be replacing Mrs Cashin, so make sure you come and say hi

Our group times are below. They are the same time this term except Tuesday mornings due to Scripture and Ethics: Monday and Friday: 9.00-11.00am Tuesday 9.30-11.00am Thursday 10.00-11.00am Maths groups are still taking place on Wednesday afternoons from 2.15pm. So please pop in if you can. Your help is always appreciated.

A reminder that students who received awards last week will have them presented at this week’s assembly on Friday.

Please try and keep Friday November 10 free. We will be joining our new Kindergarten parents for morning tea. A note will be sent home at a later date. It would be wonderful to have you all attend. Michelle Shaw and Rebecca Smith

Early Stage 1/Stage 1 K/1H Welcome back to Term 4. We hope everyone had a great holiday and has been recharged ready for the term ahead. We have already had one busy week with many more to follow.

Everyone had a fun time learning about beach safety with the representatives from Life Saving Central Coast. It was a great presentation and hopefully will remind the children to keep safe at the beach. The children were very excited about the excursion to Blackbutt Reserve and had a wonderful time.

We would love to see more helpers along to groups if you have a little time to spare. We have Literacy groups every day and Maths groups on Wednesday afternoons at 2.15pm.

Homework has started with worksheet, sight words and especially Home Reading. Congratulations also to the many children who are consistently completing Home Reading and earning their certificates. Keep it up!

Kindergarten will be learning more about our needs and wants in our HSIE unit “Meeting Needs” and we complete our Science unit “The Weather”. Year 1 will continue to work on Geography about places with 1T.

Sport will still be on most Thursdays and children will learn games. Backyard Blitz Footy skills will be on Mondays in a few weeks time. They will practise Fundamental Movement skills on Tuesday.

We will have term assessments about Weeks 3 and 4 for yearly reports and we will begin to learn a Christmas song for the end of year Family Carols Night

So as you can see we will be very busy this term again. If you have any questions or problems, please remember to feel free to discuss things with us.

Sue Hurley and Lee Girdham Class teachers

Stage 1 1T Welcome to Term 4! 1T have all made a great start to the term and I am so impressed with the reports I have heard about their behaviour at Blackbutt Reserve on Friday.

As the weather is warming up, please make sure your child has their school hat and a drink bottle with them each day.

This term, we will continue to have library on a Tuesday and PE on a Friday. Starting in Week 5 (November 6), sport will be on a Monday as we will be participating in a Rugby League program.

In Geography, we are continuing to learn about how people are connected to places. In Term 3 we looked at places within Australia and now we will be extending our knowledge to look at countries around the world that we have personal connections to. If you have travelled overseas, please have a conversation with your child so they can share it with the class.

In English and Visual Arts, Stage 1 will be exploring the concepts of point of view and perspective. We have been reading the book “Silver Buttons” and talking about how a moment in time can differ based on your perspective. Each Wednesday, Mrs Collins will be teaching 1T Visual Arts based around perspective.

Mrs Cashin is now on maternity leave. Rebecca Smith will be teaching 1T each Friday for the remainder of the year. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to come and speak with me. Have a great week, Heather Towns

1/2B Welcome back to Term 4!

This term our class will be deepening their geography inquiry into how people are connected to places. We will be looking at countries around the world that we have personal connections to. If you have family, have travelled to or are interested in another country, have a conversation with your child so they can share it with the class.

In English and Visual Arts, we will be exploring the concepts of point of view and perspective. We will be having some fun with photography using our ipads to represent everyday objects in different perspectives. You might like to try this at home too.

As we move towards the end of the year, we will also be working on our learning goals in literacy and numeracy. Don’t forget to change home readers daily. Students are encouraged to take responsibility of exchanging books and handing in their orange reading booklet on Fridays to Mrs Andrews for checking.

We have lots of fun things to look forward to at the end of the year, but in the meanwhile we will be striving for our Personal Best!

Mrs Collins 2S Welcome to Term 4 and Week 2.

This will once again be a very busy term. Swim Scheme starts next week:o) I look forward to Swim Scheme each year and know the students will really benefit from the skills they will learn during the ten day program. I am still waiting on a few students to pay for Swim Scheme, can this please be finalised by tomorrow at the latest. We will leave for Toukley Pool each day during lunch at 11:30am, so that we arrive on time for our 12:00pm session. The session lasts for 45 minutes and we will arrive back at school by 1:20pm each day. We will have lunch at our normal time of 11.00am and be back in time for recess. I have sent a note home with each child that is participating, outlining what they need to bring each day for Swim Scheme.

This Wednesday we have our visit from the award-winning author George Ivanhoff. Most students have returned their payment of $2.00 and are looking forward to his visit. If you have overlooked this payment could you

please finalise ASAP, as I do not want any of the students to miss this fantastic opportunity.

Most students are still reading at home and consistently bringing in their home reading journals. Thank you for listening to them, your dedication is being reflected in their progress.

I have included some photos of the students at the amazing Blackbutt Reserve last Friday. We all had a fantastic day and will have plenty to write about this week!

Stage 1/2 2/3R, 3/4A & 3/4D Welcome back! Thank you all for your congratulations and well wishes it has been an absolute pleasure to be back at school with respectful, smiling students! I hope you all had a well-rested break because we have another busy term ahead!

2/3R would like to say a HUGE thank you to Mrs HB for the amazing things she did with our class and in the classroom while Mrs Houison was away. I look forward to working closely with you and your children. I am excited to see some of the amazing work that 2/3R can produce this term. 3/4D have been lucky enough to have Mrs Sutherland teaching them while Mrs Day is away on holidays. We hope she is having a wonderful time. It has been a pleasure working alongside Mrs Sutherland and I am sure 3/4D are having a great time and working hard!

Last week 3/4A participated in a STEM group task. A STEM task involves students working together in small groups to create a possible solution to a problem or task, which can be tested. The groups were given 35 paddle pop sticks and some masking tape and were to make a bridge between desks that were 30cm AND could hold the weight of a dictionary for at least 10 seconds. They thoroughly enjoyed the task with all groups being successful. Here are some pictures!

In Geography this term we are starting to look at Asian countries. We are looking forward to be able to do some research and learn about some different countries.

Homework will start this week and it will continue to be the same for each class. Homework will be handed out on Monday to be returned by the end of that week.

Please ensure your child returns their permission note and $2 as soon as possible for the author visit in the library next Wednesday 18/10 at 12pm. We are all very much looking forward this!

Here are some important dates to remember: • Wed 18 October Author Visit 12pm. • Fri 10 November Mid Term Toto Swap Day • Fri 1 December Sports Assembly • Thu 7December Presentation Day • Fri 8 December Aussie of the Term

Assembly • Mon 11 December 3-6 Class Party at

Niagra Park Stadium

Term 4 communication cards were sent home this week. Please check your child’s communication card and if they have a 3W, sit down and talk to your child about why they have received it for this week and talk about strategies for improvement.

Due to the warmer weather a lot of the students do not seem to have their school hats for PE and sport. Can you please ensure your child has the correct school hat. If they do not have one our classrooms have sunscreen that is able to be applied to each student.

As a term begins can you also please ensure your child has enough lead pencils, a ruler, glue sticks, sharpeners and erasers. We seem to have the pencil eating creature back in our room this term. It is important that students

have the right equipment each day so they are organised for each lesson.

Stage 1/2 teachers are very excited to have another busy term with their students and we are looking forward to finishing the year with respectful, responsible students who are aiming for their personal best! Have a wonderful week Mrs Houison, Mrs Rainford and Mrs Sutherland Stage 3 5/6M Welcome back to what will be, for Year 6, their final term of primary school. For Year 5 it is the opportunity to put yourself forward as a school leader in 2018. The selection will be for School Prefect or Captain. These positions will be announced at the end of the year. In Term 1, 2018, House Captains, Vice Captains and Library Prefects will be decided.

In class, we have been completing our final series of academic tests in preparation for the final reports of the year. The children have been displaying their understanding of what we have learned throughout 2017. What may have been difficult to learn at the beginning of 2017 is now becoming second nature.

Our PE focus for the first half of the term is basketball. We will switch to T-ball in the latter half of the term in preparation for the Year 6 vs Parents game as part of the end of the year celebrations.

I will be missing on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week as I have been asked to be an official at the PSSA State Athletics Championships. Mrs Andrews will be my replacement on these days.

Homework is not compulsory, but the opportunity to participate is being offered again this term. To opt in your child will require a USB to download homework tasks from the school server. A new set of activities is offered on average of every 2 weeks.

Year 6 students are invited to submit a lesson plan and teach a lesson during this term. This is best achieved in pairs and can be completed (where scheduling allows) at any time during the term. Jessica and Chelsea have already started the ball rolling with a drama lesson that was so well planned and executed that they could have been doing this for years. I look forward to their next lesson and hope that other Year 6 students take advantage of this opportunity.

Brian McNally

Congratulations to the fantastic group of 4 Tuggerawong students who met the challenge to enter this year’s English Competition and the 14 students who entered the Maths competition. Our students performed well and are to be commended for their efforts. It helps for the entrants to look back at their test paper and go through the questions again now that they have been given the answers. Students need to always remember to ask if they don’t understand. English Participation Awards: Alex and Ria. Merit Award: Jasmine Credit Award: Nicholas C
