We have almost reached the end of Term 1 and, as you can see from the Deputy Principal’s report, this has been an exceedingly busy term for the Bonalbo Central School community. Thank you to the parents and community members who ac vely support the school including those who run and support the breakfast club and those who volunteer in the classroom. At the recent P&C annual general mee ng the following people were elected to execu ve posi ons: President: Ma Daniels Vice President: Raelene Smith Treasurer: Bob Pyefinch Secretary: Wendy Johnston and Sonia Eiritz 2018 nominated auditor: Manoj Kumar Congratula ons to these people and I would also like to acknowledge and thank the parents/carers and community members who a end our mee ngs and those who have served on the execu ve in 2017. In par cular, I thank Brooke Gray for her work last year. We appreciate the fact that all of you take me out of your already busy schedules to ac vely support the students in our school. Cyber‐Bullying Secondary students par cipated in a presenta on from our police liaison officer recently and all students were made aware of the importance of disconnec ng from social media at regular intervals. In this newsle er, I have a ached some strategies which provide an outline of how to deal with some of the issues surrounding cyber‐safety. Please take some me to review this informa on with your children to ensure that they understand the steps that they can take to protect themselves from cyberbullying. I have also a ached a flyer adver sing a free webinar for parents and carers held by the Black Dog Ins tute regarding mental health of teenagers. This week staff a ended a webinar by Dr Michael Carr‐Gregg on student wellbeing. He made the point that the number
of adolescents experiencing mental health issues is increasing and that this increase is much more marked among females and Aboriginal students. Dr Carr‐Gregg also made the point that suppor ng students and increasing their resilience begins well before they reach high school so the Black Dog Ins tute webinar would be of interest to all parents and not just those of you who have older students. Facebook As I men oned in the last newsle er, the school Facebook site is currently designed to distribute informa on. We have students whose parents/carers request that their photographs are either not to be taken or that they are not to be posted on social media. For that reason we have not been pos ng pictures of students and will not do so un l we develop a system of ensuring that those requests from parents are observed. While we are happy for parents to take photographs of their students at school events (such as primary assemblies, gradua on days, ANZAC commemora on assemblies etc) we ask that, if parents/carers would like to publish photos online or on social media, they only do so with photographs of their own children. This may mean that you will need to edit photos before they are uploaded. Should you have any ques ons or concerns about this policy, please make an appointment to speak to me through the office. A endance on Excursions At various mes throughout the year, students have the opportunity to a end excursions or school‐endorsed ac vi es which are designed to enhance the learning experience of students or promote their wellbeing. Students who are unable to a end these ac vi es must s ll a end school. Please do not allow students to stay at home because “no‐one will be at school”. However, please be aware that students who have been suspended during the year may not be permi ed to a end excursions if they are at risk of behaving in an unsafe manner. Ms Desiree Moore Principal

As Term 1 comes to a close, it is opportune to look back at the many ac vi es, events and learning opportuni es our students and staff have been involved in. Mul ple swimming carnivals, Touch Footy Gala Day, Rugby League trials, Open Girls Basketball and School Cross Country have enabled our students to compete and develop their spor ng talents. Educa onal opportuni es include a Careers Day in Casino and a visit by the Gideons. We have also prac sed our emergency procedures in both evacua on and lockdown drills. Our parent community were involved in a ‘Meet & Greet’ with staff earlier in the term and we now have a new P&C Execu ve team. Social learning and engagement has occurred through Na onal Apology, An ‐Bullying and Harmony Days. On the health front, Years 7 and 8 have been immunised and the Aboriginal Dental Service visited our indigenous students. We celebrated our student leaders at the Induc on Assembly and viewed the crea ve produc on (“Reflec on of Ourselves”) by our indigenous students thanks to One Vision. Our Primary classes have each presented well‐run assemblies and joined with the Pre‐school to enjoy a wonderful Easter Hat Parade and Picnic last week. Staff have par cipated in various professional development events throughout the term around Aboriginal Educa on, Finance procedures, Suppor ng Adolescent Wellbeing, VET, Learning and Support, EAfS and Mental Health. Next week, Year 12 students will sit their half yearly exams, staff will a end learning on STEM ‐ Coding and Robo cs, and our Primary Swimming Relay team will compete at the State Championships in Sydney – we wish Brad, Ciara, Dan and Alice the best of luck. We will also commemorate ANZAC Day on Thursday 12th April at 10:15am. We hope you can join us. Certainly a very busy term for everyone and next term is shaping up to be no different! An ‐Bullying Day Police School Liaison Officer Senior Constable Brooke Papasidero visited our school on An ‐Bullying Day a few weeks ago. She covered ‘The Law and You’ with senior students and ‘Cyber
Bullying and Social Networking Sites’ with students in Years 7 – 10. Both sessions were very informa ve and powerful in helping students understand the importance of protec ng themselves and others around these issues. In Week 4 next term, Officer Papasidero will return to speak to senior students about safe technology use and to Primary students on ‘Keeping Safe’. Harmony Day We had a great day on Wednesday 21st March, celebra ng diversity in our school. Many students dressed in orange, shared various mul cultural dishes for lunch and enjoyed a BBQ run by the Secondary SRC. Thank you to those families who supplied our yummy treats. Suppor ng Adolescent Wellbeing Many staff par cipated in online professional learning earlier this week with leading Australian psychologist, Dr Michael Carr‐Greg. The focus was adolescent mental health, specifically contemporary research on youth mental health. We unpacked Missions Australia's ‘Youth Mental Health Report’ and the ‘Youth Survey’. It was an interes ng session that gave us an insight into current research and some useful strategies and sugges ons to further support our students in this important area. We thank Aurora College for making this opportunity available to us. 3‐way Conferences It has been decided to postpone the 3‐Way Conferences un l Week 2 next term. This will enable Year 12 students, teachers and parents to discuss their half yearly exam results and all other year levels will have informa on about their major assessments to share. Students will be expected to a end the conference. They will be an ac ve par cipant in the conversa on, sharing their work and discussing strengths, challenges and goals for their learning. Informa on will be sent home soon about how to book an appointment. We hope you can join us. NAPLAN In Week 3 next term (15‐17 May) all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will sit the Na onal

Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy tests. Reading, wri ng, language conven ons (spelling, punctua on and grammar) and numeracy will be assessed across 4 tests using the tradi onal pencil and paper version. NAPLAN tests provide informa on on how each child is progressing against na onal standards. This informa on allows for addi onal interven on if necessary to ensure students progresses at a rate where they can fully par cipate in all aspects of the curriculum. NAPLAN does not replace, but rather complements, assessments run by classroom teachers throughout the year. Adjustments are available for students with disability to support students’ access to the tests. In most cases, adjustments would reflect similar support and assistance provided in the classroom for normal assessment ac vi es. Some students with significant intellectual disability and/or those with significant co‐exis ng condi ons which severely limit their capacity to par cipate in the tests may be exempted from si ng the tests. Please contact me prior to the tests if you would like to discuss this. Parents or carers may withdraw their child from the tests to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objec ons to tes ng. Formal no fica on must be received by the Principal prior to tes ng, so if you wish to consider this, please contact me at the school. Please visit the NAPLAN website if you would like further informa on: h ps://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent‐carer‐support/ and why not have a go at some sample ques ons at: h ps://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/the‐tests. HSC Minimum Standards From 2020, all students will need to meet minimum literacy and numeracy standards as part of their Higher School Cer ficate. This will be achieved by passing tests of basic reading, wri ng and numeracy skills needed for everyday tasks. This requirement will no longer be linked to Year 9 NAPLAN results, rather, separate online tests at various mes throughout Years 10, 11 or 12. If Year 9 students achieve a Band 8 in any NAPLAN test, they will be exempt from that respec ve online assessment. Current Year 10 students who achieved a Band 8 or above in a 2017 Year 9 NAPLAN reading, wri ng or
numeracy test are recognised as having met the HSC minimum standard in that par cular area and will not need to sit the corresponding online test. If students did not get Band 8s or above they will need to take the corresponding online tests. Informa on about this new development is a ached to this newsle er and further details can also be seen at: h ps://educa on.nsw.gov.au/literacy‐and‐numeracy‐strategy/secondary‐school‐ini a ves/hsc‐minimum‐standard. Canberra Excursion Le ers went home earlier this week for students who expressed interest in a ending this worthwhile camp in Term 3. Informa on includes details about payment, code of conduct, medical forms, an i nerary and what to bring list. I urge all families to fill in the relevant forms and return with the required $50.00 deposit before the end of this term. This will confirm your child’s spot and enable us to con nue with planning and fundraising. There are s ll posi ons available, so if you have not returned an expression of interest but would like for your child to a end, please contact the school as soon as possible to receive the paperwork. Mrs Kathryn Taylor Deputy Principal (Relieving)

NSW Education Standards Authority FACT SHEET
HSC minimum standard Literacy and numeracy skills are essential for success in life after school. This is why a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy is required to receive the Higher School Certificate from 2020. Students show they meet the HSC minimum standard by passing online tests of basic reading, writing and numeracy skills needed for everyday tasks. Students master skills at different rates so there are multiple opportunities available to pass the minimum standard online tests, from Year 10 until a few years after Year 12. Year 9 NAPLAN tests are no longer used as an early way for students to demonstrate the standard. However, stu-dents who achieved a Band 8 or above in a 2017 Year 9 NAPLAN reading, writing or numeracy test are recognized as having met the HSC minimum standard in that particular area and will not need to sit the corresponding online test. If they did not achieve a Band 8 in any one of the NAPLAN tests, they will need to sit the online test for that area. What does meeting the HSC minimum standard mean? Meeting the HSC minimum standard of literacy and numeracy means your child has the basic reading, writing and maths skills needed for everyday tasks such as:
following safety instructions in equipment manuals
understanding a mobile phone plan
writing a job application
creating a personal weekly budget. How will my child meet the standard? Your child will show they meet the standard by passing online tests of basic reading, writing and numeracy skills: Minimum Standard Reading Test – 45 multiple choice questions Minimum Standard Numeracy Test – 45 multiple choice questions Minimum Standard Writing Test – up to a 500-word response to one question based on a visual or text prompt.
Your child decides with their teachers when the time is right for them to take each test, and they don’t have to sit or pass all tests at once. After passing an online test, they don’t have to sit it again. Your child’s school enrols them in the tests. The tests will be available on the following school days:
Term 1: 19 February to 23 March 2018
Term 2: 21 May to 22 June 2018
Term 3: 13 August to 14 September 2018
Term 4: 5 November to 7 December 2018. After your child completes an online test, your school and child will receive a results report indicating, for each area, whether they have reached the HSC minimum standard or need to sit the test again. Disability provisions and exemptions Some students with disabilities will be eligible for extra provisions for the minimum standard online tests, or an exemption from the HSC minimum standard requirement. Your child should enquire with their teacher if they think they are eligible for extra provisions. Support for my child Students learn and develop literacy and numeracy skills from Kindergarten to Year 12 through quality teaching of the NSW curriculum. Teachers and schools know their students best, and will provide additional support if your child is identified to be at risk of not meeting the HSC minimum standard of literacy and numeracy by Year 12. Further literacy and numeracy resources, as well as sample online test questions, answers and practice tests, are availa-ble on the NESA website. What if my child doesn’t pass the tests by Year 12? Your child will have many opportunities to meet the HSC minimum standard, including after they leave school. Importantly, students do not need to meet the HSC minimum standard to:
study HSC courses
sit HSC exams
receive HSC results
receive an ATAR receive a Record of School Achievement
