The science of psychology tells us what builds resilience in young people and what parents can do to incorporate these evidence based strategies into their parenting practices.  Raising Happy and Resilient Girls and Raising Happy and Resilient Boys build parent confidence by providing the knowledge and the strategies to manage the burning issues of: * Managing technology * Communicating with their adolescents * Dealing with anxiety The research shows that over 60% of parents lack confidence in their parenting (Australian Childhood Foundation) and we know that it is particularly stressful with teenagers.     Dr Carr-Gregg presents parents with paradigms for effective evidence-based communication with teenagers, and we give 10 strategies to build resilience in children and young people.   In addition, Dr Carr-Gregg provides the latest evidence based strategies to build resilience in families.

Addressing the issue ofmobile phones in schools

90 minutes - 60 min presentation 30 min Q & A

Dr Carr-Gregg led the independent review into the non-educational use of mobile devices in NSW schools.   One of the outcomes has been a call for all Australian students to sit a digital licence prior to being able to bring or use a digital device in school.   The issue of cyber bullying and its resultant significant negative mental health outcomes is a key issue being addressed by the federal government. In Queensland, there is currently no policy for mobile phone usage in schools and it is at the discretion of each school to determine their own policy with support from the Department of Education. This workshop is critical for schools wanting to take a strong leadership position on mobile phone policy and to apply the key insights and recommendations from the NSW enquiry.

Harnessing Technologyto Promote AdolescentWellbeing

90 minutes - 60 min presentation 30 min Q & A

The internet is entering its third reincarnation. The technology is getting speedier and cleverer and this means that our young people will - whether we like it or not - be continuously connected, meaning that we will all have a 'real wired child'.  While the media focus has been on cyberbullying, image based abuse, sexually explicit material and online predators the reality is that there is an upside to the technology and this presentation explores how we can use technology to promote student wellbeing in the form of the latest evidence based smartphone apps, web-based programs and biometric devices.  Covers diet, exercise, sleep, mindfulnesss etc

Identifying Adolescentsat Risk

Full day workshop

Adolescence is a time of great change and development which is often accompanied by the adoption of risk-taking behaviours. Given that Australia is currently experiencing a ten year high in youth suicide, suicidal ideation and self harm and that early assessment, prompt diagnosis and treatment is associated with a much better outcome, this workshop is an essential component for anyone working with young people in education, health and welfare.  In 90% of cases of adolescent suicide, there were tell tale signs that, if identified, would have led to prompt treatment and recovery.  But the challenge is how to identify those adolescents at risk.  The Identifying Adolescents At Risk workshop is essentially the only way to practice the most up to date techniques, learn the screening tools and have your questions answered.  Using an engaging and informative mix of didactic teaching, interactive quiz, group discussion and case studies, participants will:

Promoting Healthy Nutritionwithin Schools Introducing the Smart Snacks workshop for adolescents In Australia nearly one in four teenagers meets the criteria for serious mental illness and suicide rates are at their highest level in 10 years. On top of this one in four children aged 2-17 were considered overweight or obese in 2015. Diet is proven to be crucial for mental and physical health and snacks can play a significant role in this. When snacks are well-chosen, they can keep hunger at bay, moderate blood sugar and help balance your child’s mood to support them through the day.   This 90 minute workshop for adolescents, teachers and parents, teaching them simple strategies for creating their own Smart Snacks.

When there’s a physical crisis in a school there’s usually a nominated person (people) to be the first on the scene to handle the emergency and administer first aid.   When there’s a psychological crisis in a school –whether someone’s having a psychotic episode, is under the influence of substances, or some other mental health crisis occurs, there needs to be a nominated person for emergency mental health first aid. Quite often, this person will not be a mental health professional, but a teacher or coordinator who is first on the scene.  Knowing what to do and how to manage any young person experiencing a mental health crisis is vital.Mental health can be seen as a continuum, ranging from having good mental health to having mental illness. Mental health first aid is the help offered to a person developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.   This talk gives you an overview of the most important strategies and knowledge you need to master in order to identify a young person with mental health problems and understand the spectrum of interventions from prevention, to early intervention to treatment.  This is a highly recommended session for all staff, with the outcomes being that it improves knowledge, reduces stigmatising attitudes, and increases first aid actions towards any young person in your school with mental health problems. This course is a prelude to Dr Carr-Gregg’s Identifying Adolescents At Risk program.

Mental Health First Aid Training for Teachers

Two day workshop - 2 x 6 hours

The skills all staff need at the front line of a mental health emergency.   Each year 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental illness. Many people are not knowledgeable or confident to offer assistance. Physical first aid is accepted and widespread in our community, however most first aid training programs do not cover mental health problems. A Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course teaches key pastoral staff the skills to help a colleague or student who they're concerned about a vital part of creating a mentally healthy workplace. Dr Michael Carr-Gregg is an accredited trainer for Mental Health First Aid Australia and will provide the training every staff member needs to recognise the cluster of symptoms of different illnesses and mental health crises, how to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person towards appropriate treatments and other supportive help.   More and more schools are realising the impact of mental health problems at work on their staff and students and productivity. Early diagnosis and treatment is associated with a much better outcome. Encouraging early help-seeking is one way to promote a mentally healthy workplace. This is where Mental Health First Aid can help.Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based training course which gives your employees the skills and confidence to have supportive conversations with their co-workers and help guide them to professional help if needed. It has been shown to increase knowledge, confidence and helping behaviours, and reduce stigma. This is a 12-hour course, which is usually delivered as either a 2-day training package (6 hours per day)
