Term 1 Volume 4 27 March 2015 The Hillcrest View Wargado - To Strive
Literacy update
This year we are implementing a program at called Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar across the school. This program is designed to teach students phonics, grammatical and spelling skills that will assist them with development of English. It allows us to provide continuity between year levels and moderation between classes. Students are taught sounds, blends, diagraphs, tricky words, spelling rules, punctuation, tenses, dictionary use and part of speech. We are collaborating with the International Centre for Excellence to create a program that meets the needs of all students at Hillcrest PS. If you would like further information regarding this program, speak to your child’s teacher or come and see me. Thanks, Liz Ford, Literacy Coordinator
Dear Parents and Caregivers, Our lovely, happy, smiling and always helpful school officer Mrs Patty O’Connor, is retiring this week! Patty has worked for our school community over the past sixteen years and has affected the lives of many children and parents over this time. Her supportive and nurturing way in which she always goes the extra mile for everyone, as well as her ability to give and receive with a smile, creates happy moments for everyone to share. Patty will be sadly missed by our entire school community and especially the staff who have had the pleasure of working with her. We wish Patty good health and happiness as she moves onto the next
phase of her life with her family away from the Hillcrest community. (A personal note from Mrs O’Connor: “This is my last newsletter, I would sincerely like to thank the school community of Hillcrest for making my working days so enjoyable. Thank you! I will miss you all.”

Room 11 had a great time painting the backdrop for the Harmony Day/Japan assembly. Painting on such
a large scale was a challenge for little hands but we had lots of fun and discovered that when we work as a team we can produce a fantastic result! Room 11 kids are all Hillcrest S.T.A.R.R’s
Help Us Fight Waste ~ A Waste Audit for Hillcrest Thursday 19 March 2015 at 12.15pm , Patrick Hamill from the ‘Waste Wise Program’, came to our school to complete a difficult mission. He conducted a ‘Waste Audit’ of Hillcrest Primary School’s amount of waste from the green rubbish bins. Due to time constraints we only used half of the number of bins. First of all he set the equipment up in the undercover area. A very large plastic sheet, a number of plastic sorting bins, tubs of hot soapy water and thankfully, thick rubber gloves for each student! He then emptied out the rubbish from the 4 bins onto the plastic sheet! YUK! It was our turn. We had to sort the rubbish into different types of waste, such as commercial wrappers, plastic wrappers, plastic containers, food scraps, and untouched food. Then each group was counted, weighed and recorded. We soon realized that Hillcrest Primary School does need to seriously think about how we can reduce our waste. We found 8 beautiful whole pieces of fresh fruit in the rubbish, lots of excess packaging and many uneaten or half eaten sandwiches. Patrick said the amount of bread wasted in those sandwiches was equivalent to 4 loaves of bread! In shock, we all began to think about all the children around the world who don’t ever have the chance to eat a sandwich. It was an amazing experience and certainly encouraged us to be a little more honest and discuss our lunches with our parents. It has also encouraged us to move into Stage 2 of fighting waste, ‘How can we Reduce and use our waste in more meaningful ways?’ Composting some of our waste? Worm farms to break down the waste or even chickens? What do you think? Let us know. Mrs Langley & Students Room 6
