Welcome to the winter edition of Bayswater Beat, your quarterly update on what’s happening in Perth’s inner-east.

As the cooler weather sets in, tree planting season kicks off in the City of Bayswater. I’m pleased to let you know we’re increasing the number of native plants and trees being planted this year to more than 68,000.

We’re not stopping there - with more exciting environmental initiatives kicking off in the next few months. I’m particularly looking forward to the transformation of a drainage site in Morley into a micro wetland. This project will offer significant environmental benefits while providing an attractive natural space for the community to enjoy.

As part of our commitment to involve you in our decision making, the City has introduced a new way for community members to give feedback on projects and services. The Engage Bayswater Panel is a group of residents, ratepayers and business owners who give regular input online. Read more about the panel and find out how to join on page 3.

There are plenty of free community events to look forward to during winter, starting with the City’s NAIDOC Week celebrations in just a few weeks’ time. Flick to the back cover of this edition for your what’s on guide.

Have your say on local projectsJoin the Engage Bayswater Panel

The Engage Bayswater Panel is a voluntary group of residents, ratepayers and business owners who take part in regular City of Bayswater surveys and engagement opportunities throughout the year.

Hosted online, it’s a convenient way to give regular input on issues that affect you. As an Engage Bayswater panellist, you will hear from us every six to eight weeks with new opportunities to have your say. Printed surveys will be available for participants without internet access.

The City is looking for people from all walks of life to represent their community on the Engage Bayswater Panel. If you’re over 16 years of age and a City of Bayswater resident, ratepayer or business owner who is passionate about your local area, this is a great opportunity to become more actively involved.

Find out more and join online at engage.bayswater.wa.gov.au.

Wetland project to improve biodiversityA drainage site in Morley is about to be transformed into a micro wetland thanks to a partnership between the City and Water Corporation.

The project is part of the City’s multi-award winning Bayswater Brook Catchment Management Project, which aims to improve the quality of water entering our drains before it flows into the Swan River.

The Peters Place Reserve micro wetland will continue to serve its purpose as a flood prevention site, while providing an attractive community asset with significant environmental benefits. Designed to mimic a natural wetland, native sedges and rushes will be planted to create habitat for birds, frogs and other wildlife.

The project follows the success of living streams completed last year at Russell Street Park and Jakobsons Way. More Water Corporation drainage sites will be revitalised this year - watch this space!

On Saturday 30 March, the City and Hawaiian’s Noranda held a community picnic to celebrate the opening of Noranda Nook – a new community space in the heart of the Noranda town centre. Tucked under shady trees alongside Morley Noranda Recreation Club, Noranda Nook has picnic furniture, lighting, a Little Library, community noticeboard and ping pong table. It’s a great spot to sit and take some time out.

Out and about in the City of Bayswater

Join the YACThe Bayswater Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is a group of proactive volunteers aged 15 to 25 who live, work or study in the City of Bayswater. YAC members work in partnership with the City to give input on issues that directly affect young people.

With plenty of free training provided, it’s a great opportunity for young people to develop a better understanding of how government works, as well as gain experience in leadership, event management and community engagement.

You might have seen the YAC team hosting their own stall at community events like Have a Go Day and the Maylands Laneway Festival over the past few months. The team recently expanded their skills by completing barista training at the popular Esprezzo café in Noranda.

Want to get involved? Visit bayswater.wa.gov.au.Bayswater YAC at Maylands Laneway Festival.

How long have you lived in the City of Bayswater?

My wife and I built in Morley in 1985 and are still in the same home, yet I did grow up in the 1960’s in Foyle Road, Bayswater.

What would you say is Bayswater’s best kept secret?

This would have to be the Bird Sanctuary, such a great place close to the Swan River.

What inspired you to become a Councillor?

I became a councillor as a way of giving back to my community. Councillors in the early years were never paid and worked simply to make the district a better place to be with improved amenity.

Students lead environmental changeOver 100 budding environmentalists from local primary schools came together during May for the City’s first Green Lab action program.

Students spent two days learning from experts at Lightning Swamp Bushland, before planning their own real-world sustainability initiatives to help green our City. They pitched their ideas to City of Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull at a special presentation before heading back to school to put their plans into action with their peers. We’re looking forward to seeing these projects take shape over the next twelve months.

Green Lab is a partnership between the City of Bayswater, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, and Millennium Kids.

The Morley MomentumThe Morley Town Centre has been alive with activity thanks to the hard work of local town team, The Morley Momentum. Formed just over one year ago, the group have already created Morley’s first art walk trail, organised a series of major public artworks, hosted the successful Progress Street Party, and so much more. It’s no surprise The Morley Momentum were awarded the ‘Zero to 100’ title by the Town Team Movement.

The Morley Momentum’s mission is: “To promote a safe, friendly, modern, and vibrant hub for all who visit Morley through artistic, cultural and environmental initiatives”. This group of local residents, businesses and landowners in the Morley area are always looking for more volunteers to join them. If you’re someone who is passionate about Morley, email [email protected] to find out how you can get involved.

What do you love most about living here?

I love the fact that even though we are a City, Bayswater has such a community feel about it - family, workplaces, social and sport activities, all in an area with multiple parks and shopping centres, great local transport - which is getting better with Metronet, and a beautiful river shore line. All of this is just six minutes from the CBD and a short trip to the airport. Bayswater is a longstanding community with tremendous heritage, thriving in a modern era - I love it.

Where is your favourite place for a walk?

With friends, family and my dog Yoda, I take every opportunity to picnic or walk in all the different parks the City has, from Houghton Park to the river shoreline. I enjoy

tree shaded picnic areas, our unique Eric Singleton bird sanctuary, and a stroll through our Coventry Markets to the Galleria. I can’t narrow it down to one - my favourite place to walk is the whole of the City!

What’s something exciting that’s happened recently in the area?

So many exciting events have occurred for our community - the Progress Street Party last month was amazing, and let’s not forget the Baysie Rollers in King William Street, and the Perth Symphony Orchestra at Pat O’Hara Reserve, which was attended by thousands of our community members. I feel this has been the best year yet for joint events with community groups, the City of Bayswater and local sponsors. Now that’s exciting!

Our age friendly CityAre you an older adult looking to get more involved in your community? The City’s Age Friendly Ambassadors are here to help.

Our Age Friendly Ambassadors are a volunteer group of passionate locals who help make Bayswater an even better place to live for older adults. They connect people with practical information and services, and give older residents a voice on community issues.

Whether you’re looking to get active, join a social group, or just find out more about what’s happening near you, your local Age Friendly Ambassador can help. To get in touch with an Age Friendly Ambassador, email [email protected] or call 9270 4107.

Uluru Statement from the HeartAs part of our commitment to Reconciliation, Council officially endorsed the Uluru Statement from the Heart in 2018.

The statement is now proudly displayed at the entrance to Council Chambers. The concluding words of the statement express its aspiration: “In 1967 we were counted, in 2017 we seek to be heard. We leave base camp and start our trek across this vast country. We invite you to walk with us in a movement of the Australian people for a better future.”

Spotted at Lightning SwampWe’re lucky enough to have a beautiful 71-hectare nature reserve right on our doorstep in Noranda. Lighting Swamp Bushland is home to more than 150 different plant and animal species, including some that are rare or endangered.

The City’s Environment Officers have spotted some interesting critters while monitoring the reserve over the past few months, including kangaroos, bobtail lizards, crows and a stable population of the near-threatened Quenda (or Southern Brown Bandicoot).

Unfortunately, we also noticed a species that doesn’t belong - cats. Cats make wonderful pets, but when they’re allowed to roam in this protected reserve they are a threat to native wildlife. You can help by keeping your pets indoors at night and by making sure your cat is micro chipped and registered, so they are easier to keep track of.

Where is your favourite place for a walk in Bayswater?

Along our Swan River in Bayswater is a really beautiful and peaceful place to walk, it’s full of birds and insects. We have a line of interconnected wetlands from Gobba Lake to the Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary and Baigup Wetland, that have so much precious biodiversity.

What’s something exciting that’s happened recently in Bayswater?

People are still talking about the Baysie Rollers Bayswater Street Art festival it was such a wild celebration of community - we hadn’t seen anything like it!

What’s something coming up in Bayswater you’re excited about? (e.g. a community event)

Bayswater’s plan to introduce FOGO is the one thing I’m most excited about. We’re currently working out the details of a new collection for garden waste and food waste it won’t just reduce the amount of waste going into landfill, but will turn our household food scraps and garden waste into the most amazing organic compost which is excellent news for our environment.

Would you like to get involved in protecting Lightning Swamp?

Volunteer group, Friends of Lightning Swamp Bushland, are always looking for more hands to help with revegetation projects. Find out more about what they do on their Facebook page, or email [email protected].

More art on Eighth AvenueThe City’s Art on Eighth project is growing. First planter boxes, then bollards, and now our seats are covered in art too!

Art on Eighth is a celebration of Maylands as one of Perth’s creative hotspots, featuring artists with a connection to the local area.

The latest artist to be featured is Heidy Yunita, also known as Doodledut. Heidy moved to Maylands from Indonesia, drawn to the area by the beauty of the riverside Bardon Park. Her eclectic art will be showcased on seats along Eighth Avenue for the next few months.

If you’re interested in getting involved with Art on Eighth, contact the City’s Place Manager at [email protected]. Artist Heidy Yunita with her artwork on Eighth Avenue.
