Teensoul doesn’t just write about music festivals, we also organise them! In case you missed them, Off the Edge and Teensoul’s Battle of the Bands made July Teensoul’s most exciting month. Both these awesome all-ages events appeal to a wide audience bringing them together in a celebration of music, arts, excitement and fun.

Off The Edge is all about youth culture. We have rock bands right next to punks, rappers and MC’s. As well as heaps of live music, Off the Edge features live demonstrations from skate teams, scooter riders and dance crews. The most recent festival was held at HQ Leederville on the 8th of July and turned out to be a great night for those who rocked up. Profits made from Off The Edge go towards Ruma Abedona Hospice (RAH) to raise money to care for sick/terminally ill people in India. Off The Edge is open for all ages and promotes having a good time without drugs or alcohol.

The inaugural Teensoul’s Battle of the Bands was a forum for local live acts from all across the WA region. Primarily focusing on up coming rock/punk/metal/pop bands, Teensoul’s Battle of the Bands gives these guys a chance to perform and promote themselves in front of an awesome live audience. We held the event on the 24th of July at the Cockburn Youth Centre - a fantastic venue that matched our event perfectly! The bands that performed were all unique in their own ways; from teenagers to young kids, from Albany to Forestdale, performing live acoustic acts to hard rock songs.

Off The Edge and Battle of The Bands by jessica cummins

Our first Teensoul’s Battle of the Band’s was won by one of Perth’s newest local artists Reilly & Chris. Often found performing at Ya Ya’s in Northbridge and The Ocean Beach hotel in Cottesloe, the duo’s unique mix of contemporary acoustic and dirty rock n roll have inspired music goers from all over Perth. Their energetic and most recent composition ‘Surrender your love’ will capture your heart and lift your spirits… something we all need from time to time.

Teensoul is actively involved with other youth festivals like Hyperfest and KickStart. Look out for us at any upcoming youth events or festivals soon. Here at Teensoul, we always do what we can to ensure you guys and girls have the best time you can have!

Both Off the Edge and Teensoul’s Battle of the Bands have proved to be a great success for Teensoul’s hardworking volunteers and to all who attended. We would like to thank all our bands/MCs who performed for both these nights, as well as our sponsors who helped support and promote our events. Teensoul has more events planned before the end of the year so keep your eyes out for another Off the Edge or Battle of the Bands soon!

Check out some of our online band reviews and summaries about BotB and OTE from the Teensoul website, http://colosoul.com.au/teensoul. Feel free to post your thoughts about some of the bands you have seen at our events and let us know your experiences on our Facebook page.

is your skin bothering you?

As a teenager you may have some concerns about your skin but it can be hard to figure out why your skin is bothering you. You may be more concerned about oiliness, blemishes and acne or you could be worried about your skins dullness and roughness; how to figure it out? Here are some simple, practical pointers about how to care for your skin.

_ _ _science_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ To get to the cause of skin care problems we turn to science. It is necessary to understand what is going on with your skin so that you can address any issues correctly. There are glands (referred to as sebaceous glands) in every follicle (hair) pore in the skin that produce oils (sebum) that keep the skin moisturised. Acne and blemishes occur when the sebum becomes trapped under the skin and mixes with bacteria causing the pore to clog and become red and raised. To stop blemishes in their tracks it is important to takes steps to minimise the pore clogging process. So, how can we achieve this?

_ _ _what you eat_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Although what you eat has never been sci-entifically proven to be a factor in producing blemishes it is common sense that good health improves overall wellbeing and transfers to the quality of your skin, hair and nails. You of-ten look your best when you feel your best.

_ _ _water_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Although drinking water can be very boring, drinking plenty of it is a good way to flush out toxins in your body and keep your skin hydrated to minimise any dullness. Dehydrated skin is the result of too little water consumption; some fluids we drink can cause our skin to become dryer quicker than usual.drated skin is often confused as dry skin. Blemishes are a feature of dehydrated skin as more sebum is produced to compensate for the lack of moisture.

_food for thought_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Eating the right foods such as fruits and vegetables will provide the vitamins necessary to maintain nourished, healthy skin. While junk food is responsible for raising insulin levels which has a negative impact on the body, which in turn affects skin condition. So, make sure you consider what you eat when you consider skin care – it’s the first step in your overall health and skin quality.

_lifestyle factors_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _Stress is a very important factor is skin condition. Studies have shown that when the body is stressed it produces more stress hormone (cortisol) which is responsible for producing excess oil on the skin. Stress can produce flare ups even in those that aren’t affected by pimples or acne. What’s worse is that when this occurs stress is often multiplied by the break-out itself. So what can we do about stress? It is easier said than done to deal with stress but it can be alleviated by exercise. Exercise releases endorphins (feel good chemicals) that combat the effects of stress on the body. Exercise also can help make it easier to get a good night’s rest and adequate sleep is probably the most important factor in skin care. Without rest your skin starts to malfunction along with the rest of your body. Staying up late is fun and eating sweets and burgers is of course supa YUM but don’t forget for your skin to feel good and look good you need to treat it right.

When I interviewed Peter D’Agostino it was two days

before his 18th birthday. But to look at this fit, healthy

Mater Dei College graduate you wouldn’t think

so. 2011 is Peter’s first- and last- year as West Perth

Football Club’s Colt’s captain before he steps up to

the big league. In case you’re wondering, the Colts

are the youngest West Australian Football League

(WAFL) players. They progress from development

squads at around 16 years old, and up to reserves

at 18. I caught up with Peter to talk footy, health and

reaching your goals.

How does it feel to be the captain?

It (becoming captain) was actually a goal for me

going into the year. Last year I was overlooked for the

leadership team, it was my first year. I probably wasn’t

as full on as I am this year! It was a wicked honour, it’s

all about mentoring.

How does footy affect your lifestyle?

It never, ever disadvantaged me. I’ve been playing

footy since I was four, so year in, year out, it was footy

time. I started an apprenticeship this year, but it hasn’t

really got in the way. Sometimes I’m a bit late for

footy but that’s the first real hiccup. The WAFL is pretty

good with balancing lifestyle and footy. It’s my choice

not to go to a party because of a footy game.

How does footy help a healthy lifestyle?

You’re fit and healthy! Without footy I’d probably be

sitting on the couch every night! It keeps me active, I

love running around. I’ve always been a person that

looks for fitness. I also did swimming from 9-16, until

footy started to get more full on.

But isn’t footy just for guys?

Girls footy in the country is taking off, actually! They’re

thinking of having a chick AFL equivalent league.

West Perth has a girls team. Lots of amateur teams

have them.

What do you think is the biggest problem facing

teens today?

Obesity. You just need a healthy lifestyle. There’s a lot of

guidance out there, mentors, dieticians. Being healthy

helps your wellbeing and sense of morale. Not

necessarily just joining sporting teams, just doing

something you love. Chess…and art class…just get

into a group where there’s a sense of community.

At football clubs there’s so much brotherhood.

Everyone else can experience that through going

to the clubs.

When a post is made, whoever is a friend can make a comment too. Sometimes, it can make a personal thing become bigger than it should have been. The person you have just Facebooked about can feel like total crap because now not only do they know what you think, but heaps of people do. And that person is probably reading all the posts on your wall. I guess you just need to think before you post unfriendly comments because sometimes it’s better to talk to the person face to face instead of on Facebook.

Be a true Facebook

friendBy

Have you ever been offended by what someone has written or posted about you on FB? Facebook has become soooo big now it’s easy to post what’s on your mind without really thinking about it. Facebook was set up as a forum to chat with friends in a positive way. However, now when we are feeling angry or want to say how we’re feeling in the moment, we can do it with the click of a button by making a post.

You do not have to accept anyone you choose not to as your FB friend, and if you don’t know the person - be careful. They may not always have the right intention in wanting to become your friend. Some teens have accepted friend requests without finding out anything about the person sending it, and this has gotten them into some serious trouble. Some people have even posted fake photos of themselves to trick others. You can prevent this by only accepting people you know and never meeting up with someone you haven’t met in person before. Posting photos of yourself on the FB can be seen on the Internet by the whole world unless you change your privacy settings to “friends only”. People can copy and paste your photos there is no stopping them -so be aware as once it’s up, its up! If you are continually getting things posted on your wall that you don’t like, you can always report them. And if you don’t like what is being said about you or someone else, you can hide comments or remove them from your page. Choose the type of friend you want to be on FB. We all get mad at our friends sometimes, but we almost always make up again, so be a true FB friend.

One of the most anticipated sequels in the past couple of years, Diablo III brings a new dimension of thrill to players. Dark fantasy and Horror themes are jam packed in an action

role-playing style with hack and slash elements! Who’s excited?

Diablo III plays out a lot like its predecessor taking place 20 years after the second Diablo game where the heroes of this game have now become the villains of III. The main boss, Deckard Cain, shall be returning once again to enforce fear and familiarity for us all. For those returning to the world of Sanctuary, familiar terrains, such as Tristram, will make a return. Even though Diablo III is a direct sequel, there are still new incentives, terrains, experiences, and enemies to feast your gaming desires. The great thing about this sequel is that there are journal’s that fill in the gap between games and fill in players of what has previously happened in the first two games and the 20 years leading up to the opening of Diablo III.

We are able to choose what style of character we want just like the previous games. We can now choose between barbarians, witch doctors, monks, demon hunters and wizards. A new feature to Diablo III is the Player versus Player Combat, putting the debate of “My character is better than yours” to the test. Achievement battle trophies and points show off your awesome characters and states that you and even your friends in co-operation modes are the greatest heroes in the world of Sanctuary. Even if you’re able to beat the game in single player mode, knowing there are better players out there than you definitely entices someone competitive like me to keep playing and proving their worth.

There are no official release dates for Diablo III yet however 2011 promises to be the year Diablo III finally makes its

mark on the game scene. Even if you are someone who has not played the previous Diablo titles, this is definitely a game you still want to check out. Diablo III provides more challenges, test of courage and great action battle sequences for any serious gamer. Look out for it on PC!

Are there any more games you are looking forward to getting a hold of this year? Or do you think Diablo III will be the icing on the cake. Let us know what you think over at our Teensoul facebook page!

Editors Note :I remember playing a Diablo preview version when I was just a kid! It was dark and disturbing, and though it was limited, this version of the game provided many an hour of fun with my older brother. Gaming is not my favourite pastime, but when you find a game you like it can be a great way to bond. [Djuna]
