2. Technology inventory needed to improve student academic achievement

In order to increase student achievement, the district’s infrastructure must be upgraded and maintained.Software and hardware requirements increase exponentially and in order to give students a solid foundation, weneed to have the proper hardware and software in place.

The district currently has a Cisco 6509 fiber chassis as its backbone. This allows 1Gbps throughput to eachIDF. The district currently have a MDF and at least IDF room in each building.

The district will need to be upgraded Cisco switches, which provide power over Ethernet (PoE). The switchesare Cisco 3750. PoE allow us to install IP phones, wireless access points and IP security cameras.

The connection to each school is 10Mbps. The 10Mbps SES network will be upgraded to 100Mbps, this willincrease bandwidth for better video streaming and to allow us to grow with the demands of students and emerging software. Quality of Service will be added when it is available from Verizon to make sure that

bandwidth is reserved for important network traffic.

The current Nokia appliance running checkpoint-1 firewall is old and inadequate. A new firewall solution will be installed to improve network performance and to allow VPN connectivity.

Currently the district is using two Microsoft Exchange 2003 servers. The district will be looking to replacethose two servers with two new servers running Microsoft Exchange 2007. The upgrade will allow the districtto provide the additional functionality that has been introduced with this new release.

The older Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) will be replaced and new UPS’s will be installed with planned maintenance occurring semi-annually.

Throughout the 2007-2008 school year, an evaluation of several systems will be considered. A new backup

system will be evaluated, email archiving with a district procedure of archiving email will be introduced and server virtualization will be tested for rollout in the future.

The current wireless infrastructure (currently 802.11b/g) will be evaluated and upgraded to 802.11n when it isapproved. A Radius solution will be installed at the same time to protect the district from outside attacks.

The Information Technology Department is in the process of developing a disaster Recovery plan along withsecond location to store all data.

Software Used for Curricular Support

The district has an approved acceptable use policy with the extra benefit of a login screen, which reminds thestudents and staff of this policy. Computer access is only granted after the individual accepts the reminder of the policy. We currently have Microsoft Office applications installed on all pc’s.

The Information Technology Department currently support over 3,000 computers district wide. We also have 24 pc mobile labs and 10 Mac labs for instructional use. Our network operating system software is Windows XP.Currently, networked desktop computers are operating on Windows Xp to be upgraded to Vista.Instructional software on the network complements all subject areas and addresses learners needs. The AppleDigital Learning Series provides a collection of curriculum solutions designed to enhance student informationaccess and productivity, and increase achievement in language arts, math, and science. Each comprehensivesolution in the series is designed to help educators meet No Child Left Behind requirements, address contentstandards, and prepare students with 21st century skills.

We currently have nine apple digital labs which resides in our secondary schools. These labs have thefollowing instructional curriculum, Language Arts, which encompasses Write to Learn, Get a Clue, WriteBrain; Math curriculum which includes Geometer’s Sketchpad, Measurement in Motion, Math Fundamentals,Intro to Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry, and Science which has Science Earth Browser, Froguts,PASCO Secondary Science, Starry Night, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physical Science. Thiscurriculum is also available to the students at home via the web and proper log in for supplemental help.

The District has twenty two Scholastic Read 180 classrooms elementary thru high school.

READ 180 is an intensive reading intervention program that helps educators confront the problem of adolescentilliteracy on multiple fronts, using technology, print, and professional development. READ 180 is proven tomeet the needs of students whose reading achievement is below proficient level. The program directly addressesindividual needs through adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature, and direct instruction in

reading, writing, and vocabulary skills.Elementary students have access to Compass Learning. This programs feature engaging activities that provideexplicit, systematic direct instruction and promote exploration, individual and cooperative learning, problemsolving, reflection, and real-world connections.

The district currently uses Rosetta Stone software which allows our students, teachers and parents the freedomto acquire languages at their own pace. Equally important, Rosetta Stone provides the guidance needed to learna language well. Teachers can test students end of each lesson, enabling them to focus on areas for additionalreinforcement. Rosetta Stone automatically records student progress, and provides immediate feeback wich datacan be used to customize instruction.

We currently have acess to Kisperation/Inspiration, this tool provides an easy way to apply the proven principles of visual learning. Students build graphic organizers by combining pictures, text and spoken words torepresent thoughts and information. This also allows for our students to develop early literacy skills, and moreadvanced students improve comprehension skills and better organize ideas for writing.

Thru Federal Funding, the department of Information technology will be administering student email accounts.Gaggle is dedicated to providing safe email accounts for students. Teachers control what can be written and who can correspond with the students.

This tool will allow student teachers interaction via the web. Internet homework centers will allow students toshare knowledge and get help. Online video conferences will give students the chance to learn from experts and work with mentors in various fields. Bloggging tools for students and teachers. Polling tools for creating onlinevoting systems Parent Accounts for greater home-to-school communication Student Pod-Casting Tools StudentWikipedia System

Filtering Software

The Information Technology Department will continue to provide a safe and secure setting for each and everystudent by using the latest in content filtering. Currently the district is using Websense filtration to monitor usage, block URL’s and Phishing sites.

Websense has been installed in the district since 1998. Its current setup is that it is installed on a Linux server running in a DMZ. Updates occur nightly but can be forced during the day when needed. It is kept separatefrom the firewall to allow us to make changes without disrupting the network environment.
