Our Sustainability Framework

Susten adopted Mahindra Sustainability Framework in FY17-18 & framed its Strategy

Problem Statement Unwanted Vegetation and weed is a Key Problem at any Solar PV plant

• Causes difficulties in movement of personnel for maintenance

• No grass leads to high temperature leading to loss of generation

• Shrub shadows on the modules leading to loss of generation

• Risk to life due to increased presence of reptiles

• Cut and stored dry grass is a fire risk

• 15 laborer's to clear 50 Acre plant which is expensive and time

consuming; no. of cycles is unexpected and high

Quantification

– 1 MWp solar PV plant covers approx. 5 acres

– Total portfolio under our management is 3500 MWp

– Avg. spend for one cycle of vegetation clearing is Rs. 4000/ MWp

– Total no. of cycles per year is on an average 3 per MWp

– This accounts for almost 15% of total direct cost to the company

Approaches considered to improve the process

Manual Grass Cutting: Using

traditional sickles and ploughs

Machine based: Tractors and

robotics

Semi-Mechanized: Use wire

based brush cutters

Agro PV Model: Growing crops

instead

Herbicides: Glyphosphate or other

Weed killers

Cattle Based: Sheep / Goats were

tried to remove grass

Weed Removal

Recurring expense and very

labour intensive

Diesel is the fuel and risk of

damage to PV modules due

to stones

Lack of reach and very

expensive

Damage to soil and

groundwater

Injury to animals and damage

to cables due to chewing /

horns

Converts cost to revenue –

new job creation – cooler PV

modules - no generation loss

Logical framework for Energy-Agro PV Model

WHY WASTE LAND?

Land under solar PV in India by 2022

will be equivalent to the size of entire

Delhi and Mumbai combined together.

It will take 250 years to clean the entire

area manually for vegetation, even if we

use 100 personnel’s a day; and in a year

the industry does 3 cycles.

WE INNOVATED

Cost Activity to Profit Activity

Wild Vegetations to Medicinal/FMCG

Plants

Generation Loss to Generation Gain

Unsafe Workplace to Safe Workplace

WE SUSTAINED

People: Creation of local employment

and actionable biomass yield that can be

used in medicines, foods and etc.,

Planet: Increased vegetation will reduce

soil erosion, produce more oxygen,

reduce global warming and help in

climate change, also to move towards

carbon neutrality.

Profit: From a cost to profit activity

Local farmers partnered

Crop harvest

Produce sale

• MoU signed with CII

• Channel partner as KoncarMane

• Optimum crop identified basis Weather and

Soil data samples

• Organic mix fertilizer and saplings identified

from local nurseries

• Local farmers identified and partner model

upskilling through trainings

• Lemongrass harvested yielding commercial value

• Enhancement of the local skillset by pre-

processing the produce e.g. Lemongrass

extract hence higher profits

Pre-implementation

- Legal clearance for use of land for dual purpose of farming and cultivation

2017-18

- Detailed study conducted by CII 2018-19

- Shortlist of sites and final selection of Clean Solar 36.6 MW Tandur, AP

selected for implementation given its soil texture and frequent vegetation &

soiling issues 2019-20

- Crop selection – 1. Annatto dye and 2. Lemon grass 2019-20

- Basis the water report Lemon grass 2019-20

- Identification of farmer partners in the local area and project start 2019-20

I. Research on additional generation due to lower temperature in

progress

– PV modules are designed to operate at 25 Deg Celsius

– Increase in temp leads to lower generation

– For 1 Degree Celsius the power drops about 0.4%

– Secondary research shows numerical value of increase efficiency

Tulsi 1.2 -2%

Aloe Vera 0.2 -0.5%

– In terms of financial impact it is Rs. 0.75 Lakhs / MWp
