4.6 VoWLAN R5.4 Limitations

This section gives the known limitations reported during tests and related to VoWLAN R5.4.

4.6.1 General limitations

Upgrade OAW to 6.2 directly from 2.5 releases is not supported.

Upgrade OAW to 6.2 from 3.4, 5.0 and 6.1 releases requires an upgrade of these versions

first, please refer to the table in paragraph 5.2

OAW internal database (switches configurations) is not compatible with releases prior to 3.4.

Downgrade to previous 3.4 versions will wipe out the internal database: precautions must be

applied before upgrading to 6.x if future downgrade is required.

Make first a backup of the pre-3.4 configuration before the upgrade to 6.x, in case of a

necessary downgrade. The OAW administrator will be informed by a warning during the

downloading of a pre-3.4 release in flash, or during the change of a boot partition including a

pre-3.4 release.

CAC value after upgrade to AOS 6.x is the minimum of the different ALG call capacities set in

pre-AOS 3.4: it must be reconfigured after upgrade.

If using “g only mode”, there shall be no 802.11b clients on the infrastructure.

802.11a/n: it is recommended to use non-DFS (36-48 and 149-161, depending on the

different regulatory domains). If using channels where DFS is mandatory, note that enabling

more than 8 channels may degrade roaming performance.

802.11a/n: the channel 165 is not implemented on handsets, do not use it.

DAS (distributed antenna system) is not supported for voice

Air Radio Management (ARM) should be disabled or in maintenance mode on the controller in

production.

It is not possible to mix security types within a specific SSID.

It is not possible to mix QoS methods (WMM, CCX or SVP mode) on the same 802.11 radio.

Page 12: TECHNICAL RELEASE NOTE OF V - itanciagroup.com · Technical release note of VoWLAN R5.4 TC1832 Ed.02 ... This document describes the Alcatel-Lucent VoWLAN R5.4 solution ... (Standards-Based

The maximum WLAN handsets authorized on the same AP is 9.

VOIP TSPEC Enforcement parameter in QoS profile must be disabled (or set to 100 (to

avoid “Service unavailable” message and reboot)

IGMP multicast requires the use of a multicast aware router and the proxy IGMP management

on the OAW.

RSTP protocol for the OAW 6.x is not compatible with the RSTP 1x1 VLAN basis for Alcatel-

Lucent. This limitation exists only on 450x switches models which support the RSTP.

If “Control Plane Security” is enabled to send certificates to APs, each AP’s information of

campus APs and RAP should be manually added to the campus AP whitelist or RAP whitelist.

Otherwise, AP cannot connect to the controller.

From AOS6.1, when making inter-nodes call from the handset, the audio can be blocked by

OAW controller. AOS-5.x and AOS-3.x don’t have this issue. Workaround: Modify the user-

role for the handsets to allow the UDP-PORT 32514. Add the following rules:

ip access-list session rtp-acl

any any udp 32514 permit queue high

any any udp 32514 32767 permit queue high

4.6.3 Limitations on 8118 & 8128 WLAN handsets

Handset radio performance can be impacted by interferences produced by other radio devices

in the same radio band

A site survey for voice deployment must be done on site

Precedence of a/n radio band as possible

Page 13: TECHNICAL RELEASE NOTE OF V - itanciagroup.com · Technical release note of VoWLAN R5.4 TC1832 Ed.02 ... This document describes the Alcatel-Lucent VoWLAN R5.4 solution ... (Standards-Based

If 802.11b/g radio is used, some channels may be revised depending on b/g

interferers

2x 20 Mhz mode is not recommended if radio 802.11b/g is used, due to a limited

number of non overlapping channels.

802.11a/n: it is recommended to use non-DFS (36-48 and 149-161, depending on the

different regulatory domains). The recommendations made in general limitations for

802.11a/n must be considered is DFS is mandatory.

Handsets are not compatible with the 802.11k radio resources management and this mode

makes them inoperant. 802.11k administration or 802.11k profiles settings must be

deactivated on the WLAN controllers.

Due to DFS channel improvements, the power consumption in call can be higher in 4.2.2

compared to 2.6 when using the default setting for “Network”, 802.11a/n channels “all”. For

best performance and battery lifetime it is recommended to limit the channels used to the ones

actually used in the system.

G.723 is not supported by the handset.

Infrastructure compatibility : Alcatel-Lucent AOS >= 5.0, Cisco CCXv2, Cisco CCXv2, Meru,

Juniper, Motorola, Ruckus, Enterasys, Extricom, HP, Aerohive, Avaya. Software versions and

supported hardware are detailed in VoWLAN PCS, restrictions and configuration settings must

be verified in technical documentation for each infrastructure.

TCLAS is not implemented in this release.

The GUI local menu will not return to idle automatically.

Audio routing is only supported on OXE R10.0, LS announcement on WLAN handset is not

supported for OXE R9.0 and R9.1. The handset will manage the loudspeaker and microphone

mute locally.

No key tone when have an external call.

During EAP-FAST authentication, the handset only supports auto provisioning “.PAC” file. It will

try to download the “.PAC” file at each initialization.

No default vendor class for OmniTouch™ 81x8 in OXE DHCP server configuration, vendor

class must be added manually.

PTT: Master can hear himself.

WEP key is lost after an upgrade to 4.2.2 version, the key must be reinitialized manually

The following settings can only be configured via WinPDM tool and the configuration cradle:

802.1x parameters

TSPEC Call Admission Control

DSCP value for the QoS

4.6.4 Limitation in multi-switches mode

The use of default PSK key for IPSec tunneling will not work after an upgrade of OAW to 6.x

releases: change the default value of PSK key by another value before the 6.x upgrade.

4.6.5 Limitation with 802.11n

AP125 in HT mode only supports open and WPA2-PSK security mode (not WEP or WPA-PSK)

(support WEP / WPA-TKIP in HT mode on an 802.11n AP12x need to enable allow-weak-

encryption in ht-ssid-profile)

Page 14: TECHNICAL RELEASE NOTE OF V - itanciagroup.com · Technical release note of VoWLAN R5.4 TC1832 Ed.02 ... This document describes the Alcatel-Lucent VoWLAN R5.4 solution ... (Standards-Based

2x20 MHz mode is not recommended on the 2.4 GHz frequency band (802.11 b/g) due to a

limited number of non overlapping channels (3 only).

2x40 MHz mode is not recommended on the 5 GHz frequency band (802.11 a/n) when the 4

non-DFS channels are used only.

4.6.6 Limitations with Cisco CCX

The support of CCX mode for topologies with 310 & 610 WLAN handsets and 8118 & 8128

handsets requires Cisco AP which supports this mode

Re-authentication fails with Cisco Autonomous AP when using CCKM

Cisco ACS RADIUS server not supported

4.6.7 Limitations on 802.1x security

If the forwarding mode on an OAW-AP12x serie is changed from tunnel to split-tunnel, the

switch has to be rebooted for wireless 802.1x clients to complete the EAP exchange.

WPA2-Enterprise 802.1x authentication types requires the use of a RADIUS authentication

server to validate user specific credentials.

Microsoft IAS RADIUS does not support EAP-FAST authentication.

WPA2-Enterprise 802.1x authentication requires an onsite intervention. The certificate

installation on OmniTouch are done with the winPDM tool and cradle and must be done on

each phone.

WPA2-Enterprise EAP TLS re-authentication mechanism is advised to be disabled.

Warning The use of 512 or 1024 bit certificates is recommended for optimal performance.

4.6.8 Limitations on AP

802.11n indoor AP105:

AP owns a single Ethernet Port (so cannot be relevant with some RAP topologies)

The performance of AP-105 is less than AP125 but inline with requirements

4.6.9 Limitations on Remote AP

When AP125 acts as Remote AP, Enet1 cannot be used if PoE is running on Enet0.

Split-tunnel mode is recommended for RAP configurations

TSPEC is not supported in split-tunnel mode

It is recommended to use WPA2-PSK and 802.1x securities

If tunnel mode has to be used for RAP, limit the data traffic by configuring the bandwidth

contract (example: if the total uplink bandwidth is 1000kbps, the data traffic limitation should

be defined as 700kpbs (1000 – 300): the configuration is done in the user-role bandwidth

settings

Bridge mode is not supported in the Remote AP environments

CAC during roaming between two Remote APs does not work properly (CAC is not required in

RAP network environments): CAC is suggested to be disabled

Page 15: TECHNICAL RELEASE NOTE OF V - itanciagroup.com · Technical release note of VoWLAN R5.4 TC1832 Ed.02 ... This document describes the Alcatel-Lucent VoWLAN R5.4 solution ... (Standards-Based

The voice quality is impacted at RAP side when there is heavy TCP data traffic from HQ to

Remote site: limit the bandwidth for data traffic by configuring the bandwidth contract.

FTP service must be included into the ap-role access list to enable the 6.2 AP remote firmware

upgrade.

4.6.10 Limitations with wireless Mesh

No more than 2 hops for mesh

No more than 6 APs per mesh portal

WMM Qos must be enabled on mesh links and on mesh APs

A good signal strength is necessary to make mesh (at least -50 to -60dBm)

Line of sight for the mesh points preferred

4.6.11 Limitation with Remote Mesh

Only RAP5WN can work as remote mesh portal

Client support on mesh radio feature is necessary as RAP5WN is a single radio AP

For legacy AP to be used as remote mesh point, it should be configured as Remote AP

4.6.12 Limitations with branch offices hardware

Controller OAW-4306GW.

The internal AP of the controller is deactivated by AOS 6.2

Upgraded with AOS 6.2, the 4306GW controller appears as a 4306G-1 and

5.4 Installation of Omni Touch versions

The 4.2.2 SW version for Omni Touch is the last released.

5.4.1 Upgrade WLAN handsets versions with separated archives

When handsets versions are separated from an OmniPCX Enterprise patch, it is recommended to do

the following procedure to upgrade the OmniPCX.

The binary files of software version 4.2.2 and the WinPDM software can be found on the BPWS in

section Technical Support > Software download > Phones > IP Touch WLAN.

To enable the installation of the 4.2.2 Omni Touch version with the existing VoWLAN topology onsite,

the following steps are recommended:

Deactivate the Reset for Update for all the 8118/8128.

This management is possible by modifying the following mgr parameter for all 8118/8128.

In Users > Tsc Ip User: Reset for Update authorized + NO

Use an external TFTP server available on the LAN for Omni Touch is a possibility. Then the

TFTP IP address must be configured in the Firmware TFTP IP field available from the

administration menu of the handset.

In case of Static IP configuration for Omni Touch, This TFTP IP address must be configured in

the Firmware TFTP IP field.

In case of dynamic IP configuration for Omni Touch, you can configure the standard 66 and

67 options, or Alcatel 64 and 65 options (vendor class) in the DHCP server available on the

LAN to input the value of TFTP server as IP address. This option will be used to download

firmware from the TFTP server.

Page 18: TECHNICAL RELEASE NOTE OF V - itanciagroup.com · Technical release note of VoWLAN R5.4 TC1832 Ed.02 ... This document describes the Alcatel-Lucent VoWLAN R5.4 solution ... (Standards-Based

Technical release note of VoWLAN R5.4 TC1832 Ed.02

Copyright © 2013 Alcatel-Lucent. All rights reserved page 18/20

If use of the internal OmniPCX DHCP server, please note the DHCP class is alcatel.mipt.1 for

the Omni Touch WLAN handsets.

If you force the handset not to download firmware from TFTP, input 0.0.0.0 value in the

Firmware TFTP IP field available from WinPDM tool.

Recover the handsets binaries archives and decompress the files content on the TFTP target directory:

ot8118.bin

ot8128.bin

mipt8r1bin

Use of the OmniPCX internal TFTP server is recommended for the mass deployment.

In dynamic mode, the TFTP server management is generally done through the management of

lanpbx-mipt.cfg file. Then the MIPT binaries files must be placed on the call server hard

disk, under /DHS3bin/usr2/downbin/wifi directory

(‘owner/group’ rights are 2011 1002 for all files).

To take in account the versions, the Reset for Update can be activated for all handsets to upgrade and

the 4.2.2 deployment can be done with the OmniPCX TFTP server.

6 ANNEX

6.1 Management via OmniVista 4760 for large systems

A template file for the "Reset for Update" management is helpful for the deployment of WLAN

handsets for large systems. A template is joined with this communication and can be imported in

OmniVista 4760.

Here a 4760 example for the Reset for Update deactivation (and activation)

1 Compile the directory numbers list of all WLAN handsets in a Excel file.

2 For each OmniPCX, open the attached file User_EN.txt with Excel tabler:

==================================================

Tsc Ip User

Node Users Directory Nb Reset for Update authorized

MyNodeName 63353 63353 NO

==================================================

3 Change the User number and Directory nb NodeNAME 63353 63353 NO

4 Add a new line for each extension NodeNAME 63353 63353 NO

5 Save the file to TXT format with the columns separator option to ‘Tab’

6 Launch the 4760 client, connect Français and launch the configuration module.

7 Connect to PCX in configuration mode.

8 Click right in the directory.

9 Import the User_EN.txt file.

10 Check the update in 4760 (apply search on TSCIP User).

Note

You don’t need to change the PCX name ‘NodeName’ (it will be replaced by OmniVista 4760 during

the import).
