Guidelines for CommunicatingTech Information:

Make Appropriate Word Choices:

word choices can make technical information

clear beyond recognition.

Always rely on short, two-syllable words asopposed to no longer three – syllable words.

E.g:

An example is a specific instance thatillustrates a larger point.

It is not only more interesting than pagesof dry information. It can also help theaudience to grasp abstract information.

Analogy:

Analogies are another method ofcommunicating technical information.

An analogy is a comparison between twoobjects, instances or people suggestingthat what is true of one is also true ofother.

Translate measurement scales into useful analogies:

The measurement scales used inscientific disciplines are difficult for layaudience to understand.

Any measurement scale unfamiliar to the

audience should include an explanationof that scale.

Visual aids increase the clarity ofcomplicated information thus visual aids are

must for many technical presentations.

Its really hard to imagine explaining a

complicated process without a visual aid tocommunicate the essence of the event.

Structuring the technicalpresentation:

Structure is very important for apresentation.

Structured message is understood andremembered better than an unstructuredmessage.

Establishes rapport with the audience.

Presents the purpose statement.

Previews the main points to be covered.

Organize your speech around two orthree main points.
