REHABILITATION SCIENCES What made you decide to attend NEIT for your degree? I had an interest in automotive repair. Upon investigating educational programs in my general area of interest, I found that New England Tech offered an automotive program that met my needs. How did you choose your program? I received several invitations to attend Tech Nites to explore the many educational programs offered at NEIT. I was intrigued by the programs and the quality of the technology available within NEIT’s educa- tional environment to facilitate the learning experience. What did you do to get started with your career? I have several family members and friends who completed programs at New England Tech and are now successfully employed in their fields of study. In addition, upon recommendation of a friend, I contacted a representative at NEIT who provided me with options that met my academic needs. Tell us about your current position. As of August 11, 2015, I have been employed as an automotive technician at Mulzer’s Car Care Inc. in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. I acquired this position prior to my graduation from NEIT’s Automotive Technology program. At this establishment, we encounter a variety of makes and models of vehicles. I work as a member of a team of professionals who provide support to each other when necessary. What do you feel ultimately prepared you for your position? The real life experience shared through the Automotive Technology professors at NEIT was of utmost importance to me. I not only learned how to use technology and tools, but I also learned to anticipate events that could occur related to specific situations. What advice would you give to encourage other women to join the automotive field? The work setting provides change and new challenges on a regular, if not daily, basis. The automotive field is rich with employment opportunities. This type of work provides a true sense of accomplishment and empower- ment for women. I never worry about being stranded on the side of the road with a faulty vehicle and feeling helpless. In my current place of employment, I have experienced many positive interactions with my fellow workers. Co-workers have shared tools, offered words of encourage- ment, and assisted me with difficult jobs. I have also been invited to help others on challenging jobs. Do you have any advice for graduates who are just beginning their job search? It is my recommendation to meet a poten- tial employer in person, demonstrating genu- ine interest in the position you are pursuing. What can current students do to better prepare themselves for jobs in this field? Students should open themselves to op- portunities to practice skills related to the field. If automotive work is truly the student’s field of interest, he/she should begin acquiring the necessary tools for employment. Students should be organized and maintain their tools and equipment. A Message fromPresident

Richard I. GouseGreetings to all. I would like to share some exciting news regarding the programs and projects taking place at New England Institute of Technology.

We are proud to announce that New England Tech’s online bachelor’s degree programs were ranked #1 in Rhode Island, #3 in New England, and #49 nationally out of 1200 programs reviewed by U.S. News & World Report and outlined in its 2016 Best Online Programs directory. Today, more and more students and professionals are turning to online programs to earn an advanced degree. Our diverse range of both bachelor’s and master’s level online degree programs offers individu-als the opportunity to earn their degrees while balancing the demands of work and family.

Our program offerings continue to grow with the addition of three new courses of study in the health sciences field. Beginning this spring, NEIT will offer Bachelor of Science degree programs in Rehabilitation Sciences, Health Care Management and Health and Wellness. These programs have been developed in response to employ-ers seeking well-versed, technically trained employees in specialized fields within the health care industry.

On the campus development front, construction of our new 416-bed resi-dence hall is well underway as well as the 40,000-sq. ft. addition to the main building at the East Greenwich campus. The concrete footings and foundations have been placed, insulated and back-filled. The structural steel for the build-ing frame is scheduled to arrive in late February. We are eager to fully resume these projects once spring arrives.

We have much to be proud of as we continue our mission of provid-ing New England Tech students with the knowledge and skills they need to make positive contributions in today’s competitive labor market.

For SIx wEEkS of the fall quarter, NEIT offered a basic computer skills program and job readiness class to eight students with special needs referred to NEIT from Resources for Human Development of Pawtucket, RI. The Information Technology (IT) Department and the Academic Skills Center collaborated to develop the program which included teaching how to use Word, Power Point, an Excel appointment calendar, a Cisco phone, how to send an email and create a memo.

Four NEIT Information Technology students, Paige Des-rosiers, David Bienkiewicz, Ryan Silva, and Preyas Thakkar, worked each week as a tutor and coach and shared their knowledge with the students to enhance their office skills for future employment. The students were very appreciative and learned a great deal from their tutors. The program concluded with a small ceremony at which the students and tutors were recognized by NEIT faculty and staff for their participation in the program. Since this program was so successful, plans are underway to offer it again in the spring.

NEw ENGlANd TECH’S Center for Automotive Technol-ogy in Warwick, Rhode Island, was the setting for the 10th annual FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Tech Challenge held on Saturday, January 30, 2016. The competition began in September, 2015, when 56 middle and high school robotics teams registered to par-ticipate in this high-energy competition. Through a series of three qualifier tournaments held on December 5th, December 19th, and January 9th, the top 33 teams advanced to the state competition on January 30th.

The 2015-2016 game, FIRST® RES-Q, is a dynamic rescue-themed challenge. Each team is required to use the authorized FIRST® kit to design and build its robot. These robots are powered and controlled by two android devices that demonstrate new technology. Robots score points by clearing a debris field, rescuing climbers, climbing a mountain, hanging from a cliff, and resetting a rescue beacon. Teams are scored based on the effectiveness of their robot, the power of collaboration and the determination of students.

Congratulations to the following top three teams advancing to the FIRST® East Super Regional Competition to be held at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania in March: Aquidneck Island Robotics, North Kingstown High School, and Westerly High School. All regional winners from across the country will later compete at the FIRST® World Championship in St. Louis, Missouri in April.

FIRST® awards were also presented to the competitors based on criteria utilized throughout the process of building their robots. Congratulations to Aquidneck Island Robotics, winners of the Inspire Award; Bishop Hendricken High School, winners of the Think Award; North Kingstown High School, winners of the Connect Award; East Greenwich High School, winners of the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award; Renegade Robotics, winners of the PTC Design Award; Mount Hope High School, winners of the Motivate Award; The Fellowship, winners of the Promote Award; and Wheeler Upper School, winners of the Control Award.

For more information on the FIRST® Tech Challenge contact Erin Flynn, NEIT’s Manager of Admissions Outreach and Events and R.I. FIRST Robotics Tech Challenge Affiliate Partner at [email protected] or 401-739-5000.

SAMI Expands Training Programs

oN FEbrUAry 8, 2016, the Shipbuilding/Marine and Advanced Manufacturing Institute (SAMI) added a Shipfit-ting training program to its current Welding and Advanced Manufacturing offerings. Developed in collaboration with industry employers including Electric Boat, the new 210-hour curriculum and lab were designed to replicate a real world work environment. Students will acquire basic skills in fabri-cation assembly, layout, burning, grinding and tack welding.

Ten participants were selected for the first Shipfitting training program based on the outcomes of an evaluation process that included an orientation, math and reading assessments, hands-on skills evaluations and case manage-ment meetings. Instructors Joseph Mandoux and Charlie Zwolenski have 70 years of combined shipfitting experi-ence. SAMI also focuses on work readiness skills and safety procedures in the delivery of all of its training programs. Each participant receives the OSHA-10 certification.

For more information on New England Tech’s SAMI programs, call 401-739-5000, ext. 3700, or visit www.samiRI.org.

oN JANUAry 20, 2016, the Career Services Office teamed up with the Architectural Building Engineering Technology Department to host its first Employer Networking Night. Ar-chitectural Building Engineering, Construction Management, and Interior Design students and alumni were invited to speak with representatives from 16 industry employers who shared their experiences with the attendees. Thirteen NEIT alumni returned to campus to represent their employers at the event!

The event was deemed a great success. Christian Naula, a NEIT ‘11 Construction Management graduate representing Colt Builders, stated, “We definitely saw some interest and what we were looking for. I think it is a good idea to keep the event small like it was so we

can have more one-on-one interaction with the students.”Harris Rebar’s Joe Neal said, “We spoke with many pro-

spective candidates for our company. We have hired several students over the past 10 years from NEIT and are impressed with the knowledge and understanding the students come out of NEIT (with) ready to tackle the job market.”

“We are so glad that we took the time to attend. It was a great experience,” stated CAM HVAC & Construction, of Smithfield, RI. In fact, a graduate from NEIT’s Construction Management program attending the event was hired to work for the company by noon the next day!

New England Tech would like to thank all those who at-tended and helped make this event such a success.
