Family Shabbat Services 5776

Each month, there is a special “Family Shabbat” service designed specifically for families with children in our Reli-gious School. This gives us an opportunity to come together as a community to celebrate Shabbat. They will fea-ture friendly singing, age-appropriate readings, and birthday blessings. During some of these Family Shabbat Ser-

vices, specific classes will participate in leading some of the prayers.

We hope that your family will join us for all of these Family Shabbat Services, as they promise to be won-derful celebrations in our community. We would appreciate each family to bring a sweet for Oneg fol-lowing the services.

Please join us to honor our Confirmation Students Friday, June 10, 2016 Erev Shabbat and Confirmation

@ 7:00pm at Franklin Federated Church

This service will honor our Confirmation students (10th graders) who elected to continue their Jewish education beyond religious school. They will help lead the Friday night service. During the service, the students confirm their sense of Jewish identity and their place in the Jewish com-munity.

Meet our Volunteer Committee, Auxiliary and Ad Hoc Chair People

Adult Education Melissa Folsom and her husband Owen, along with their children, Emma and Jacob have recently moved to Wrentham from Franklin. Melissa has chaired the Adult Ed committee for two years. The committee focuses on providing adult congregants the

opportunity to explore Jewish heritage and customs in a relaxed atmosphere of community. Melissa is known for her love of giraffes, whose awkward beauty and unique grace are, to her, a proof of miracles.

Budget and Finance Lori Beth Towne lives in Franklin with her husband Jerry Sawyer and her son David Towne. This is her first year chairing this com-mittee, whose purpose is to manage the financ-es of the temple. Lori Beth has previously served on the nominating and fundraising com-

mittees, as well as the Sisterhood. She is known to many as the short, dark-haired member of the mah jongg crowd.

In order to accomplish all the tasks involved in running the temple, the rabbi, temple staff and Board of Directors are support-ed by numerous committees. Most of the committees have chairs. Here is a brief introduction to these energetic congregants.

Education Dawn Doucette-Kaplan and Jenn Eagerman are co-chairing this committee. Dawn is from Medway, where she lives with her hus-band Seth and their children, Haly and Ryne. Dawn also chairs the Early Childhood/Tiny Tots committees, with a focus on helping

families with young children find a supportive Jewish com-munity where they can connect with other families raising Jewish children.

Jenn lives in Franklin with her husband Scott and their children, Samantha and Abe. This is the first year that either Dawn or Jenn has chaired the Education committee, which sup-ports the efforts of the Director of Education and Religious School teachers by organizing and providing many of the supplemental activities

that enrich the school year. Jenn may be found weekly at the Religious School front desk. Dawn and her huge smile will also be found teaching the temple Zumba classes!

Development (Fundraising) Jill Simms lives in Franklin with her husband Tony and their children, Jessica and Zachary. This is her first year chairing the Fundraising committee. One of her main focuses will be to coordinate fundraising so that various groups do not overlap one another’s efforts.

Jill also chairs the Sisterhood and is currently a member of the Board of Directors. Jill is assisted in fundraising by Cindy and Howard Heilweil, who have just completed their second successful year as co-chairs for the temple’s July 4th booth. The Heilweils live in Bellingham with their children, Sarah and Adam. They are both active on additional committees.

Leadership Development and Nominating

Margot Rivelis lives in Franklin with her husband Michael and their children, Melis-sa and Sam. This is Margot’s fourth year serving on this committee. The committee has a two-fold purpose: to create a means for developing leaders among the congre-

gation and to identify and connect with potential nominees annually for the temple Board. Margot also serves on the Board of Directors, handles publicity for the Sisterhood, manages TEC Tidbits and TEC Times for the Communica-tions Committee and teaches in the Religious School. In her spare time, she produces many of the B’nei Mitzvah invita-tions sent by the congregation’s families.

Relocation This newly established committee, run by Howard Heilweil, is working in conjunc-tion with the building sale committee, ex-ploring options for relocating the congre-gation in the event that the 900 Washing-ton Street building is sold.

Meet our Volunteer Committee/Auxiliary and Ad Hoc Chair People

Communications and Publicity This committee is responsible for facilitating both internal and external communications.

Margot Rivelis maintains both the weekly TEC Tidbits update and the monthly TEC Times publication. Steven Cohn is the temple’s webmaster. Steve lives in Franklin with his wife Amy and their children, Ben and Max. Steve has been maintaining the website for 2-3 years and is responsible for managing its con-tent. In his own words, he is best known as “the guy riding the bicycle.” Lisa Lipson is the editor for the temple Facebook page. She has been a significant member of the Communication Commit-tee for 9 years, serving previously as TEC Times editor and technical advisor to the committee. She and her husband Stewart live in Franklin with their son Jacob.

Sue Cass manages the external publicity, working with area newspaper editors to pub-lish the temple’s worship service schedules and holiday observances, as well as press re-leases/feature articles about special events. Sue and her husband Colin live in Franklin and have two adult daughters, Sharon and

JennyBess.

Service of the Heart Sherene Borr and Cindy Heilweil, co-chair this committee. They have shared the re-sponsibility for this committee for four years. The committee’s purpose is to pro-vide support to temple members in times of need. Among those services, Sherene

and Cindy coordinate the provision of meals and visits for sick congregants and organize shiva observances. Sherene lives in Milford with her husband Steve and their children, Gabby and Dylan. Sherene currently serves on the Nominating Committee and has previously

served on the Search Committee for the Director of Educa-tion. Her smile is well known in the community.

Religious Activities (RAC) Jayme Solomon-Zissu lives in Hopedale with her husband Jonathan and her daugh-ter Becca. This is Jayme’s second year serv-ing as chair of RAC. This committee is responsible for overseeing, planning and coordinating all of the congregation’s holi-

day observances. Known for her red hair and enthusiastic cheerfulness, Jayme is also developing a reputation as host-ess for many of the temple parties.

RAC is additionally responsible for the sched-uling of B’nei Mitzvah services. Miriam Goodman has served as B’nei Mitzvah coor-dinator for two years. She and her husband Michael live in Franklin with their daughters, Sarah and Jenna. Miriam is probably best known as the congregant who established

Java Nagilah.

Synagogue Life and Membership Connie Shulman and Richard are founding members of the congregation. They have two adult sons, Jonathan and Carl; they live in Franklin. Connie has previously served as secretary to the Board, Education Director and Youth Commission advisor. Connie has chaired SL&M for 7-8 years. The committee

is responsible for both building/enhancing the community (synagogue life) and recruiting/engaging/retaining members (membership). Connie is well known for her friendly efforts to engage people both in the temple setting and in the larger community.

Gracious Gifts Susan Hirshfield has chaired this committee

and been its only member for 10+ years. She

has been responsible for making sure that

donations to the temple are acknowledged,

both publicly in the temple newsletter and in

a personal thank you to the donor. She and

her husband David live in Franklin and have two adult

sons, Jeffrey and Andrew. The Hirshfields are also charter

members of the temple.

Page 11: TEC Times, September 2015

Page 11 TEC Times September 2015 / 5776

Brotherhood Stewart Lipson has served as chair for the Brotherhood for 5 years, during which time its membership and activity scheduling have flour-ished. His committee is responsible for creating an atmosphere in which adult males in the con-gregation can meet, have a good time and pro-

vide a service to the community. He is best known as the “Philadelphia Sports fan.”

Youth Commission Wendy Bierman is the newly appointed chair of this committee, whose purpose is to serve as a liaison and support to the Youth Advisor, parents and teens.
