Connecting Churches to Change Our World

Gary L. McIntosh, Professor of Christian Ministry and Leadership at the Talbot School of Theology, a department of Biola University, recently ruffled some feathers with his blog, entitled “Worship Attendance Growth Rates.” He says, “A church is a living organism. It's natural for an organism to grow. And it's natural for a church to grow.” God created plants, animals, and people to grow. When they do not grow we label it as stagnant or growth-challenged. When a baby doesn’t grow or advance by age ten or twenty it’s devastating and a reason for medical intervention. “When a church is not growing it is quite likely that something is wrong as well. In the United States a healthy church will see between 5 - 12% growth in worship attendance each year.” There are a number of indicators that could be used to evaluate whether or not a church is healthy. He mentions conversions per year, budgets, number of guests who join, members who read their Bible and have regular devotions, dollars and hours spent in community service projects or mission events, the number of corporate hours spent in prayer, or small group attendance. He contends, as have experts like Thom Rainer, Ed Stetzer and George Barna, that the most consistent indicator of a church's health is its worship attendance. A negative number most likely represents a church that has challenges to overcome. A positive growth rate indicates the ministry and mission are likely going well. There are always exceptions. Context DOES make a huge difference - churches in a smaller community do not have the same potential as one in a major metropolitan area, but numbers still represent people and people are all around us. A church in decline MAY be healthy (check out Gideon’s story), but this is a rare occurrence (<5% of all churches). He closes with a generalization, “I suggest the following table of growth rates to be an indicator of church or denominational health: Where is your church? We would love to support the churches of the TEBA to be vibrant, healthy, growing congregations. Can we help you?

LEADERSHIP MATTERS by Roger Yancey, D.Min.

Leaders of effective churches balance family and work and make certain they have time to share the gospel, according to a recent study by Life Way Research. The study included 101 pastors identified as effective leaders because their churches ranked in the top five percent in conversion growth in American churches. Here’s how effective leaders compared to others. • Pastors of effective churches sleep slightly over six hours per day. Pastors of comparison churches sleep almost eight hours per day. • Pastors of effective churches spend 22 hours in sermon preparation each week versus four hours for pastors of comparison churches. • The effective church leaders spent 10 hours each week in pastoral care com-pared to 33 hours for the comparison group pastors. Pastoral care included counseling, hospital visits, weddings and funerals. • Effective church leaders average five hours per week in sharing the gospel with others. Most of the comparison church pastors entered “0” for their weekly time in personal evangelism.

Comparison church leaders spend eight hours per week – more than an hour each day – performing custodial duties at the church. The typical custodial duties included opening and closing the facilities, turning on and off the lights, and general cleaning of the building.

Leaders of effective churches average 22 hours a week in family activities. The comparison church leaders weren’t too far behind with 18 hours of family time each week.

6 Habits of Effective Pastors

Have you bought a 2013 calendar yet? As you think about 2013 how have you decided to spend your time? Time management is important in all of our lives. One of the big lessons I continue to learn is the difference between being busy and being effective. Its not hard to find something to do but it is critical to do the right things. Reflecting on the many demands for attention on the time of the average minister makes it clear that a minister either manages his time or his time will manage him. This was brought home by the findings of a study from Dr. Thom Rainer, President of LifeWay. The study com-pared effective church leaders (defined as churches ranked in the top 5% in conversion growth) against other church leaders. The findings in the study “How Do You Use Your Time” are highlighted in the column to the left, “6 Habits of Effective Pastors”. So what does this research suggest for Pastors and Ministry Staff members? Well, it doesn’t mean they should sleep less but it does indicate that pastors who are in churches that are effective in conversion growth are deliberate in how their time is utilized. Message preparation receives significant emphasis with more than 5X the amount of time set aside for message develop-ment. Other areas such as pastoral care was in-creasingly entrusted to others even though the pastors are serving in churches that are growing on an annual basis. Its not that these pastors do not desire to give pastoral care but they realize that it is critical to entrust care to other ministry leaders so they bring the very best they can to the platform on Sunday. Also, these pastors are very focused on sharing their faith on a regular and ongoing basis. Evangelism is not what they talk about but a vital part of who they are. It is a lifestyle that allows them to intersect with the lives of people in a intentional manner so oppor-tunities to share are present and they are ready to step into a God ordained moment to point others to Christ. What they don’t do is clean bathrooms or cut the lawn because there are greater priorities to attend to and they have learned how to release tasks to others that do not require their personal attention. What then does this research suggest for Churches and Church Members? Well, that really depends. If you want your church to grow by reaching people with the Gospel it can mean that you might not get the same level of personal service you have been expecting from your pastor. It can mean that the church leadership protects the time of the pastor so he can focus on tasks that are directly dependent on his efforts. It can mean that we embrace the reality of the New Testament that is encapsulated in the phrase, “Every Member is a Minister” both in spirit and in deed. We should embrace the need for the pastor to have adequate time for message preparation and personal study. A pastor with time for his family will be more effective in his ministry. One thing is certain, when a pastor chooses to focus on the things only he can do and gives less attention to the things that others can be entrusted with in the church he will find both fans and critics. Let me encourage you to be a fan. In Kingdom service,
