2019 World Para Snowboard
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Pyhä / Finland
Team Leader’s Manual January 2019
2
Dear Team Leader, Welcome to the 2019 World Para Snowboard Championships. This will be the first World Championships since Big White, Canada, in 2017 and the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games. We expect Pyha and Finland to deliver a great event as the city has a long experience in organising both Para snow sports and able-bodied championships. In PyeongChang, I had the opportunity to watch the world’s best snowboarders in action and witness how much the sport has developed in recent years. There more athletes, more countries and more depth in talent. I expect fans and media in Finland to have an amazing experience like I did in South Korea. In this guide you will find the information you need to know about the competition, the venues, classification, transport, accommodation and all the relevant areas. I would like to thank both Local Organising Committees for their work supporting World Para Snowboard to deliver the championships. I have no doubt we will have a great time in Pyha and find everything needed to deliver extraordinary performances. Best of luck to all the competing athletes and teams. Thank you, Andrew Parsons President International Paralympic Committee

Tiina Lindström, Executive Director of the Finnish Snowboard
Association, is looking forward to Finland’s first Para snowboard World
Championships.
On behalf of the Finnish Snowboard Association, I wish all athletes,
coaches, friends, family and spectators a warm welcome to Finland and
Pyhä to experience what I know will be unforgettable spring games in
beautiful Lapland.
Finland is a small country where collaboration is all-important. We have
an outstanding team working on this event, and we wish to thank the International Paralympic
Committee, the Finnish Paralympic Committee, Pyhä Ski Resort, Visit Pyhä-Luosto and the numerous
sports associations and volunteers who have contributed to these games. We promise to make this a
first-class competitive event where athletes will enjoy wonderful conditions in which to achieve
great performances and enjoy competing to the full. All this we can achieve thanks to teamwork,
top-level expertise, enthusiasm and a truly positive attitude.
We are also grateful to the Ministry of Education and Culture for their financial support and to all the
sponsors of this event. Thank you for helping us bring to life an event that together we can proudly
show to the whole world.
We cannot wait to see how para snowboarding has developed and grown during the past year.
There will be breath taking performances, thrills and excitement – combined with the special
snowboarding community spirit and a positive atmosphere. We wish all athletes the best of luck in
their competition and an unforgettable experience at the Pyhä World Championships. Let the fight
begin for the World Championship titles!
Welcome!
Tiina Lindström

Pyhä ski resort - an unique venue As talking about Pyhä, you have to talk about Pyhä magic. With astonishing scenery of Finnish Lapland and one of the snowiest areas of Finland, Pyhä is an ideal venue for snowboard event to remember. Last season, Finnish Snowboard Association organized two World Cup events that were riders’ favourite. The course, the resort and the organization got exceptionally positive feedback, and for World Championships the bar is set even higher. Pyhä ski resort is pleasantly compact: all the important services and facilities - lifts, hotel, restaurants, accommodation, a well equipped gym, massage rooms, meeting rooms for team captains, relaxing areas and so on - are just couple of hundred meters away from each other. Pyhä was nominated as The Ski Resort of the year 2017 in Finland, and it’s easy to see why. The resort is focusing on the most important thing - the riding - but the facilities are top class, too. Pyhä is also the best place in Finland for backcountry riding.
Polar Madness - the event arena Next to Pyhäexpress, a fast, decked chair lift is located the event arena: Polar Madness, a slope specifically built for SBX and banked slalom courses. Finnish Snowboard Association has been helping to make it the best place in Finland for SBX camps and competitions. No wonder teams around the world gather to Pyhä for early season training. Last season, riders were really impressed with the versatility and technicality of Polar Madness. It will definitely host the best Para Snowboard competition to date.
