Four stages can be identified for leaders on the journey from being a team manager to becoming a team coach: Stage 1. Team Manager: The focus here is on managing team members well. Individual performance management is critical (e.g. setting direction, assigning goals, holding members accountable and engaging in development conversations. Stage 2. Team Leader: The focus here is more about developing a team’s collective goals and a shared approach. Individual and collective performance management is necessary. The shift from “group” to “team” occurs. Stage 3. Team Orchestrator: The focus here is on helping the team look at itself more systemically. The team leader helps the team balance internal cohesion with an increasingly proactive external approach. Stage 4. Team Coach: The focus here is on developing the team’s individual and collective capacities. Emphasis is placed on fostering the conditions for the team to be increasingly self-managing and coaching.

With the aid of a professional internal or external coach, leaders are accompanied on this transformational journey. Over the course of 6 to 12 months, the coach engages the team leader to make a dramatic shift in range and impact. The process involves a blend of self-discovery as well as action-learning with the team leader making interventions on his/her own team(s). The process may incorporate:

• Identifying or creating a team framework • Discovering one’s strengths and gaps • Developing new team facilitation skills

for use in team meetings and when facilitating team retreats

• Exploring new modes of team working • Building strong individual and team

performance management skills • Incorporating individual, peer and team

coaching skills into the team’s culture • Experimenting with new tools and

collaboration platforms • Transforming meetings • Coaching sub-team leaders

This coaching service can be done in both 1-to-1 as well as in group coaching formats.

Quote: “It is not realistic to expect any one individual to possess all the various iterations of strengths and skills necessary to lead a company through a decade or more of roller coaster markets, global expansion and economic changes….the global leader of the future should concentrate on building a team of leaders who feel a sense of ownership for the business and who can rely on each other’s strengths during the different challenges the company will face.” -Marshall Goldsmith
