Each time we discussed KEA, we came back to our membership. At the end of last year, there were only about 2 active members in KEA. Our focus for this semester was to bring our membership up so we could accomplish so much more! I’m pleased to say that our chapter currently has over 70 members! We are so excited to have each of you! Towards the beginning of this semester you can be expecting a mandatory meeting for all members that will focus on plans for the semester. Also at this meeting we will be electing officers for this year and preferably to carry on until next year. The positions we will be looking for will be historian, Outreach to Teach chair, Read Across America chair and secretary. Also, members looking to fill the president or vice president role for next year should email me as well. For more information read page 4 of this newsletter. I have spoken with the librarian, principal and teachers at Rockfield Elementary School and they have agreed for us to host a Read Across America Event at their school this Spring! Rockfield is a great school with enthusiastic staff and students. Come to the meeting to help us plan a memorable event for these students. I hope you each have a wonderful first month back and I am looking forward to hearing more from you!

Brenda McGown has been the KEA-Bowling Green UniServe for over 6

years and for the past year, an important aspect for of WKU’s KEA

Student Program.

Ashlee and I met with Brenda almost a year ago with other association

members to talk about the two of us attending the National Education

Association Conference in New Orleans. Not only did Brenda inform usthe Third District Education Association would fund costs but she assured

us that the TDEA was eager and excited to work with KEA-SP this year.

Throughout this year Brenda has often greeted Ashlee and myself withher bright, smiling face in the TDEA office. She has welcomed us to each

TDEA Board meeting, as well as including us on every itinerary, donateditems to our WKU KEASP, joined us at conferences and offered to help

with whatever came our way.

Brenda will be leaving the UniServe position in Bowling Green and willbe working on the implementation of Senate Bill 1 and with KEA-Retired.

While WKU KEASP will miss Brenda, we know she will be accomplishing

great things wherever she is working.

Thank you so much for all of your hard work and enthusiasm Brenda!

CCONFE ENCEONFERENCES??  WWHYHY??

For the past two newsletters, you have seen articles highlighting KEA-Student Program conferences. Asnew KEA members, some of you may be more curious as to what they’re about to help you decide if it is

something you’d like to be apart of.

While there are conferences held at the national level, KEA hosts conferences throughout the year. The

is a Fall, Winter and Spring conference held by the state student program each school year, with theWinter conference fast approaching. So, why should you go?

•  All expenses paid.KEA will reimburse all members for gas as long as members are car-pooling. Hotel fees are paid, a

well as meals. KEA wants to invest in great teachers, that’s you! So if they can send you to a

conference that will better you as an educator, they’re interested!

•  Professional development. Each KEA hosted conference gives pre-service teachers professional development opportunities.

Past professional developments have included differentiation in the classroom, charter schools,

using puppets in the classroom and a session on the 10 things every teacher should know. We’relooking forward to sessions on technology in the classroom, working with students close to your

age, working with special need students and an elementary focused PD at the winter conference.

For each professional development you attend, you will receive a certificate stating yourattendance. It’s great for your resume!

•  Networking. By attending these conferences you are not only meeting teachers and professionals from

throughout the state, you’re meeting Kentucky’s future teachers! You could be doing the Cupid

Shuffle with Kentucky’s future Teacher of the Year. These are great people to get to know notonly as friends who can relate to you as a pre-service teacher, but as future resources.

•  It’s Just Fun! Sure it’s great to stay at home or hang out in Bowling Green, Kentucky, but getting to travel

across the state, meet great people that I can relate to and experience something new isdefinitely worth my time. You will meet people that you’ll stay friends with for years and take

back skills that you’ll use the entire time you teach. Plus, KEA

events are known to allow students to loose a little bit and justhave a good time.

If you’re interested in the February conference still and have not

contacted me, do so ASAP. If you are unable to attend the Winter

conference, keep an eye out for the Spring Delegate Assembly!

•  SecretaryThe secretary will be present at all meetings if possible and will record whdiscussed and what decisions are made. This documentation will be postedblackboard for members who were not able to attend the meetings.

to WKU KEASP members for Outreach to Teach events. They will generally in charge of this event.

The Vice President is invited to all Third Distr

Education Association Board meetings.

•  PresidentThe President will be the face of the WKU KEASP chapter. They will work wmembership recruitment in the Fall and Spring. They will also keep record
