Missio Dei by Pastor Patrick

Love One Another "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you..." John 13:34

I really appreciate the change of seasons we experience in Minnesota, but I love Spring. It's that time

of year when buds start pushing forth from the tips of the branches, even as they get covered with some

late-season snowfall. The tenacity of those buds, knowing that the stronger sun of the ever-increasing

daylight hours will soon burn away that pesky white stuff, provides the glimmer of hope we need

following the dark and cold winter season. It's as if our Creator knows just what we need and when we

need it.

That's similar to the scene in the Gospel of John when Jesus is preparing his disciples for his

departure. He has been filling them with such rich teaching along the way. He's given them more

parables, miracles and lessons than they can ever absorb. Now the time is critical; only a few short hours

remain before Jesus is to be handed over for crucifixion and the disciples will begin a new season of

ministry without their leader. In that moment, Jesus boils all of it down to one thing: love one another,

just as I have loved you. He frames it in the form of a commandment to give it greater importance and

make it that much clearer. That is just what the disciples needed at that moment, even if they didn't know

it. Simple, clear, unambiguous. Love one another.

Even though our mission statement at Christ the King is a little more wordy than Jesus' command

on that Maundy Thursday, it boils down to the same thing. Being "a caring community committed to

empower all people..." means showing love the way Jesus loved. Caring deeply for the needs of all people,

no matter who they are or what they've done, is the example of love Jesus demonstrated throughout his

earthly ministry. There's a great banner outside a church in our community that conveys that message

clearly. It reads, "Jesus didn't reject anyone and neither do we." That is loving one another.

However, the headlines in the newspaper and lead stories of newscasts consistently convey a

different reality. It seems the overarching theme these days is pretty much the antithesis of loving one

another. Whether it's the violence in our own community, or the discord created through the presidential

campaigns, or the battle against global terrorist networks or apathy toward the refugee issues, it seems

we've lost the big picture ability to love one another. None of these issues is simple; I get that. There are

many different perspectives and complications that go into all of these challenges. Maybe that's why Jesus

made his words so simple. Love one another, just as I have loved you.

As we celebrate the coming of Spring and the hope that burns eternal, looking forward to the new

life bursting forth from creation, let us also keep those words of Jesus first in our hearts. Love one

another. This commandment isn't just for when people are nice to us. Even when we don't necessarily

agree with the other viewpoint, love one another. Even when our neighbor sins against us, love one

another. Even when our hope is beset by yet another late-season snowfall, love one another. The words

of Jesus are simple, clear and unambiguous. They just aren't always easy. God's blessings in this new

season.

With Jesus in the Prayer Gym Jesus taught us to pray: And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. What does this mean? We

ask in this prayer that our Father in heaven would not hold our sins against us and because of them refuse to hear our prayer.

And we pray that he would give us everything by grace, for we sin every day and deserve nothing but punishment.

(Martin Luther)

Jesus gave us the Lord’s Prayer in response to the apostles’ request to teach them how to pray. So what do we

learn about prayer from this petition? Whether we realize it or not, this petition places us face to face with

one of the basic tenants of our Christian theology: We are sinners in need of grace. It flies in the face of the

cliché that humanity is basically good. We don’t like to hear we sin every day. Jesus probably knew we would

be more convinced of our sin if we would be placed in the same ring with another sinner. This is one of those

rare times in the Lord’s Prayer where we find ourselves alongside other humans. And that’s what life is all

about, one sinner rubbing shoulders with another sinner. We don’t have to live under these conditions very

long before we reach out to grasp God’s way of living more harmoniously… to forgive. God first forgives us.

And having received such a great gift of grace, we are enabled to forgive others. The simple warning in this

petition is that our communication with God can be compromised when we fail to forgive other sinners.

Jesus raised the bar high when he said from the cross: “Father, forgive them for they know not what they

do!” Those words are for us as well as those who mangled his body with thorns, spears and nails!

- Pastor Donohue Sarff

Pray for: … honesty to admit that we are sinners; a keen sense of God’s forgiveness; those who sin against

us; those who commit acts of violence that they repent and turn to our Gracious God for forgiveness; healing

in our world damaged by sinful human acts; other concerns important to you.

The final Faith in Motion worship for the program year will be on May 4th and May 8th. This will be the last week of the Easter season, (Mother’s Day too), so we will have plenty to celebrate!

Families with Children, Ages Birth-3 This spring, we are very excited to be trying something new for families with children from birth through 3 years of age. Join us each Wednesday in April for 45 minutes of parent/child time together celebrating “God Made.” Each week, we will meet in the Rainbow Room at 4:30 PM for family time where you and your child can spend time playing and learning about all that God has made. Themes for each week are as follows:

Week One (April 6) – God Made the Sky Week Two (April 13) – God Made the Earth Week Three (April 20) – God Made Animals Week Four (April 27) – God Made You and Me

Additional information: No registration necessary; no cost; come for as many or as few of the classes as you can. If you need childcare for older children, let Wendy or Justine know. Snack available at 4:30 for children who get the “tummy growlers”. Some play activities might get messy; come in casual clothes. Our goal is to offer time for fun and fellowship for the parents too. We encourage parents to get

to know one another while they play together with their kids. For this reason, we ask this time together be “device free”.

For any additional questions, please contact Wendy. Hope you can join us!

JAM and Kids Klub begin the final rotation of the year—Easter Believers—We Believe!. This wraps up the 2015-16 theme of Believers based on Hebrews 11:1 ~ Now faith is being sure of what we hope for. It is being sure of what we do not see.

Rainbow Room children will sing one final time on Sunday, May 8th at the 9:30 Faith in Motion worship. Children may come to worship with their parents and will be called up front to sing.

Parent/Family meetings for all families in Rainbow Room, JAM and Kids Klub, and CLUB 6789 will be held on Sunday, May 1st at 10:15am and Wednesday, May 4th at 6:30pm. Please put this on your calendar and plan to attend this important informational meeting for all CTK families involved in education ministries.

The following dates have been chosen as Wacky-doodles for the summer of 2016. Due to transportation issues, please note the Wacky-doodle days have been changed to Tuesdays rather than Wednesdays. June 7 and 21; August 2 and 16. All days are 8:30-4. Events will be coming in the next Newsletter.

PARENT OPPORTUNITY SCHEDULES: Posted below are the volunteer schedules for JAM and Kids Klub, as well as Rainbow Room. Please check the schedules (listed by child’s name), and mark your calendars. Remember, it is your responsibility to check the schedules where you have children attending and to be present on those scheduled dates. If you have a conflict with your date, please exchange with another parent. It is imperative that we have parent volunteers each and every week!
