lilhen the band is switched between FM and AM,a signal from the band switch detection circuitcauses Q28 to momentarily eome on, and tuningautomatically goes to the frequency stored inmemory 1 (STATION 1).

Memory HoldThe power switch (ON/STANDBy) for the F-7

is located in the second stage of the power trans_formers (Fig. a-6). Power continues to be suppliedto TC9137P even after the porver switch is tumedoff (in STANDBY position).

TC9137P ha.s a selfcontained inhibit functionallowing it to set all its functions to a staticcondition (oscillations stopped, all inputs locked,indicator drives tumed off, all outputs set to LIevel). This function is activated by a low levelinput to pin 40 (IÎi-H), and during this time, polverconsumption is held to a level of approximately10pA. When the power switch is eut off (placingset in STANDBY position), pin 40 goes to a lowlevel, TC9137P goes into an inhibit status, holdingmemory contents using minimum current. Also,when exùemal power supply is cut (AC line cordunpluged), the charge stored in backup capacitor(C210) protects the contents stored in memoryfor approximately 3 days.

Q39 functions to prevent IC current drain. Whenpins 33 and 34 go into an inhibit status (H level),the cunent discharge from these pins can increasepower consumption. Q39 is turned off duringinhibit to prevent this from occurring.

4.6 FREOUENCY DISPLAY CIRCUITThe synthesizer IC(TC913?P) uses the re-

ception frequency display static driver IC(TD6301P) to convert the b digit LED numericdisplay to a 4 digit display.

During FM reception, the bth digit displayseither a "0" or "5" (10kHz increments). The TC9137P 0/5 terminal (pin 28) is controlled withoutbeing passed through TD6g01p. The connectionbetween TC9137P and TDGBO1p consists of twotiming signal lines and one data signal line. Onecycle of data (Fig. 4-7) is transmitted through thedata line when power is turned on, when tuningfrequency is moved Up or DOWN, during auto_scan, during memory recall, or when the band isswitched between FM/AM. The data signal con-sists of a 16 bit binary code, with 11 bits offrequency data and 5 bits of reception banddata. The 11 bits of frequency data consists of thedifference between the present reception frequen_cy and the lowest frequency obtainable in thepresent reception frequency band, in binary-codedform (the decimal point and bOkHz incremenbignored in FM).

Using two strings of pulse signals, the TD6B01pconverts the binary coded serial data into BCDcoded parallel data. This data is decoded by theBCD to 7-segment decoder and output to the dis_play.

4. CIRCUIT DESCRIPTIONS4.1 MAJOR FUNCTIONS

The F-7 is a PLL digital synthesized tuner refer-enced to a crystal oscillator. Its main functions areas follows:

1. Frequency Range

FM: 87.5MHz to 108.0MH2 in 50kHz steps.AM: 522kHz to 1602kHz in 9kHz stePs.

2. Tuningo Tuning is by an UP or DOWN key. Pressing the

key once changes frequency 1 step (9kHz in theAM band, 50kHz in the FM band). Holding theUP or DO\ryN key depressed causes the fre'quency bands to be scanned.

o Positioning the TUNING MODE switch toAUTO and pressing the UP or DO\ilN key oncecauses the unit to go into the auto search tuningmode. In this mode, the unit automaticallyscans the frequency band, with scan stoppingat, and tuning into any broadcast station trans-mitting a signal exceeding a prescribed level ofstrength.

o Pressing the STATION CALL key causes the

unit to directly tune to a frequency preset into

the unit.

3. Memoryo Up to 6 FM and 6 AM frequencies can be preset

into the memory.o A special memory holds the frequency of the

station tuned at the time the power supply is

cut OFF. \ttlhen power is restored to the unit'

4. Indicators. Frequency is displayed by a ?-segment LED

numeric display. Five digits are used for FM

tuning and four digiLs for AM tuning.o Signal strength is indicated by the LED 5-point

indicator.o FM and AM band indicator.o A flashing band indicator, indicates that the unit

is in "memory write" (preset) status'o STATION indicators (memory address).o FM STEREO recePtion indicator.

4.2 FM TUNER SECTIONFront-End

The FM front-end uses a dual-gate MOS FET RFamplifier (single stage), and variable capacitancediodes the equivalent of a 3-ganged tuning capacit-or. The local oscillator uses an output buffer ampto maintain stability during strong signal reception.

The local oscillator signal is input into the syn-thesizer circuit and compared with the referencesignal, and the resulting tuning voltage is appliedto the variable capacitance diodes where it be-comes the oscillator frequency (or tuning frequen-cv).

lF Amplifier and Detector

This section consists of two ICs and two dual-element ceramic filters. The first stage IC(M5215L) is a single-stage differential amplifiercurrent-limiting limiter, and the second stage ismade up of the FM IF system IC (PA3007-A)(consisting of an IF limiter amplifrer, quadrature

detector, and meter drive).

Multiplex DecoderThis section consists of IC (PA40O6-A), and

contains the PLL system switching signal generator

circuit, chopper type MPX decoder, pilot signalautomatic canceUer, stereo auto selector, VCOkiller circuit, muting amplifier, muting controlcircuit, and stereo reception indicator circuit'

The chopper type switching circuit either does

or does not establish a signal, thereby generating

no noise or distortion.

4.3 AM TUNER SECTION

The AM tuner section uses IC (HA1138) and

variable capacitance diodes the equivalent of a

2-ganged tu nin g caPacitor.The local oscillator signal is input into the syn-

thesizer circuit and compared with the reference

signal. The resulting tuning voltage is applied to

the variable capacitance diodes where it becomes

the oscillator frequency (tuning frequency).To improve strong signal reception stability,

the IC has a built-in AGC (automatic gain control)in addition to a bar antenna and damping coil,

all controlled by an FET in response to the RF

amplifier outPut level.
