4. CIRCUIT DESCRIPTIONS4.1 PHONO CIRCUITRF Interference Filter

Since the phono input circuit is extremely sensi-tive, it is adversely affected by radio frequencyinterference. This interference is reduced by insert-ing a resistor in series with the phono input circuitby setting the PHONO INTERFERENCE FILTERswitch on the rear panel to the ON position.

Equalizer AmplifierThe equalizer amplifier is a B-stage direct-

coupled amplifier with emitter-to-emitter feed-back. An S-N ratio of SGdB (at 2.bmV input,IHF-A, PHONO INTERFERENCE FILTER switchOFF) has been achieved by using a ultra-low-noisePNP transistor (2SAST8) at the first stage, andreducing the signal source resistance and equalizerelement impedance.

The 2nd stage load has been reduced, a large

6

output voltage obtained, and the output impe-dance lowered by using an emitter follower at theoutput stage.

Metal film resistors having a tolerance of. llToand polypropylene film capacitors having a toler_ance of !2Vo are used on the NFB circuit to obtainan equalizer deviation of within r0.2dB over the2OHz to 2OOOOHz range. The maximum allowableinput of this circuit is 20OmV (at 7kHz, THDo.otTo).

4.2 TONE CONTROLSThe tone amplifier is a B-stage direct-coupled

amplifier with emitter-to-emitter feedback.

_ Tone control (BASS, TREBLE) is accomplishedby providing the tone amplifier NFB circuit with afrequency characteristic. The NFB circuit ischanged to a flat frequency characteristic whenthe TONE switch is in the OFF position.

4 . 3 P O W E R A M P L I F I E RThe first stage is a differential amplifier formed

by twin transistor, while the load circuit forms acurrent mirror circuit. The current mirror servesto make this stage operate in push-pull mode, thereby eliminating the even numbered harmonics, and doubling the gain.

The predriver stage is a Darlington connection, while the load circuit forms a constant-currentsource, thereby obtaining a high voltage gain.

The povver stage is a Darlington connectionpure-complementar5r SEPP circuit, employing anhigh speed transistor. The high speed transistoris a kind of IC consisting of a number ofsmall transistor being connected in parallel via anemitter resistor. This provides excellent highfrequency characteristics comparable to those ofa small-signal transistor. Furthermore, becausethere is no time constant in the NFB circuit in thelow-frequency region, amplification is possibledown to DC (DC inputs will be cut off, however,by the input coupling capacitor of the poweramplifier.).

The circuit features described above provide anextremely wide power frequency range (65W +

65W, 20Hz to 2OkHz,THD O.O2%, 8s, ).

4 .4 INDICATOR CIRCUITThe SA-708 output power and function indi-

cators feature fluorescent indicator tube (FL tube). In this tube. thermionic emissions from the cath-ode are accelerated into the fluorescent substanceof the segmental anodes, resulting in the emissionof light. This tube is used to indicate numerals, letters, and other symbols.

t c ( T A 7 3 1 8 P ) t /2

s t G N a L l N

siA-7cl8

An outline of the FL tube drive circuit is shownin Fig. 4-1. The output circuit signal is applied topin no.6 (4) of the IC (TA7318P-A). The IC con-tains a detector circuit, compressor (40dB), andpeak hold circuit for both left and right channels. The dynamic range of the signal is thus contractedby 40dB to obtain a "peak held" DC voltage.

The output power indicator segments of the FLtube are driven by the HA12010 ICs (one for eachchannel) equipped with 12 pairs of differentialamplifiers. These amplifiers are biased at increasinglevels, so each amplifier will commence to operateseparately as the input level increases. And sincethese amplifiers apply the voltages to the outputpower indicator segments, each successive segmentwill light up in tum as the input level rises.

The function indicators are lit up as a result ofa voltage being applied to the corresponding func-tion indicator segment according to the selectedpositions of the FUNCTION switch.

4 .5 PROTECTION CIRCUITThe purpose of this circuit is to protect the

speakers and the power amplifier. The relay in theoutput circuit is automatically opened in any ofthe following cases;1. During the "transient operations" when the

pov/er supply is tumed on and off.2. Upon detection of an overload caused by a

short circuit in the load.3. Upon detection of a DC voltage in the output

caused by component failure or accident.

Muting Operation When Power Supply is TurnedOn and Off

With reference to Fig. 4-2 when the power sup-ply is turned on, Qz tums off due to +Br and +Bz.If there is no input (DC) on Qc and Qr, they willbe off, and the timing capacitor C, charges upthrough R3 and D3 and thus Qr tums on. \[henQ3 conducts, the relay operates, and the outputmuting on the power amplifier will be removed.

When the power supply is tumed off, +3, yillabruptly decay, and Q, will conduct owing to theresidual component of +Br . As a result, Cz willrapidly discharge, Qr will cease to conduct, where-upon the relay will become de-energized andrestore muting.

Overload DetectorThe overload detector circuit incorporates the

load (RL) in one side of a Wheatstone bridge (seeFig. 4-3). The base and emitter of a sensing transis-tor (Q, ) are connected to the opposite comers ofthe bridge, so if RL decreases, Qr will becomeforward biased. If RL falls below a prescribedvalue, Qr will turn on, thereby pasding a currentthrough R3 and Dr. Due to the voltage differencegenerated across R:, Q, will become forwardbiased, and consequently tum on. C, will rapidlydischarge. As consequence, Q3 will tum on and therelay will become de-energized, thus causing theoutput circuit to open.

DC Voltage DetectorThe output circuit is connected to the Q5 emit-

ter and Q+ base via a low-pass filter (Ro, C, ).Any DC voltages appearing at the output circuit ofthe power amplifier, will be applied to the e5emitter and the Qa base. If the voltage is negative,Q, turns on. Due to the voltage difference generar-ed across Rr, Q, will become forward biased, andconsequently turn on. C, will rapidly discharge. If the voltage is positive, Qc and e2 tums on. C,will rapidly discharge. As consequence, e3 wiùtum on and the relay will become de-energized,thus causing the output circuit to open.

level, turn the power on, and wait about 10minutes.

2. Connect a DC voltmeter to the TP terminals(L ch; TP4 O and TP3 O, R ch; TPl @ andTPz o) of the cWK-130.

3. Check that the voltage between Tp4 and Tp3(L ch) lies within the DV DC 4mV- b0mVrange. Then make a similar check for the R ch(between TP3 and TP4). If the voltage is lessthan 4.4mV, cut jumper A (L ch), and jumperB (R ch). If the voltage exceeds bOmV. checkfor circuit failure-
