St. Charles North graduate Taylor Bond was vital to that strong start.Bond bagged five goals and distributed three assists in back-to-back wins against Cedar Rapids in the sea-son-opening series in November. Bond’s hot start continued with a hat trick in a 7-4 win against St. Louis on Nov. 26 and the game-winning goal – his 10th goal of the year – in a 6-5 win against St. Louis on Nov. 27 as the Mustangs improved to 4-0 on the season.It wasn’t until a 6-0 loss against host Kansas City on Dec. 3 that the Mustangs failed to score. That was the Mustangs’ first loss of the season.Thanks in large part to his scoring prowess, Bond earned league honorable mention honors for Week 3 as part of the MASL Team of the Week. Bond found the back of the net at crucial points in both matches against Cedar Rapids. In the second victory, a 9-8 win at Cedar Rapids on Nov. 13, he completed his hat trick with the game-winning goal on a smooth give-and-go with defend-er Ephraim Beard with 6:18 remaining. In a 7-6 overtime win the day before, Bond ended a streak of four straight goals from the Rampage by scoring in the most unlikely fashion. He stripped Rampage keeper Brett Petricek near midfield before turning and scoring on the empty net from long range. “Once we were down, coach told us to high press immediately,” Bond said. “As soon as the goalie gets to the second line, it’s my job to get over there. He took a touch that came off a little too far. I knew once I got it, the goal was open, so it was just instinct at that point.” Bond’s strip and score set the stage for the team to complete the comeback on a golden goal from forward Efrain “Wilo” Martinez in overtime, his third goal of the night. Martinez also earned Week 3 Team of the Week accolades.“We are very grateful for our fans,” coach Armando Gamboa said after the second win against Cedar Rapids. “They came in and kept being energetic. Our only goal coming into the opener was to secure a win. The Seattle Sounders claimed their first MLS Cup title Saturday, defeating Toronto FC on penalty kicks 5-4 after extra time finished scoreless.

Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei and defender Roman Torres were the heroes in the shootout. Frei saved Michael Bradley’s attempt, only for Toronto keeper Clint Irwin to parry away Alvaro Fernandez’s shot one round later. When the shootout went to the sixth round, Toronto’s Justin Morrow hit the crossbar while Torres converted his attempt high and slightly to Irwin’s right to send the traveling Seattle fans into delirium.

Here are three thoughts on what was a rugged MLS Cup final.

1. Seattle makes its long-awaited breakthrough

This was one of those grim, gritty finals that makes connoisseurs weep. The defenses dominated, though Toronto created better chances. In fact, To-ronto striker Jozy Altidore had several clear opportunities to put the home

side on top, but the lethal finishing touch that has characterized his play in the postseason was absent on this night. The play of Frei had something to do with that, especially when he delivered a brilliant one-handed save to deny Altidore in extra time. Frei stymied Tosaint Ricketts as well.

The aesthetics will matter little to Seattle, though the fact that this edition of the Sounders made the club’s long-await-ed MLS Cup breakthrough seems completely counterintuitive. Think of the best Sounders teams, and images of attack-ing players like Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins immediately spring to mind. This side had to operate differently, especially after Dempsey was sidelined with a heart ailment in late August. And while the brilliance of midfielder Nico Lodeiro often drove the attack, this Sounders team embodied a resilient defense that proved to be the team’s founda-tion.

This game proved to be no different. Seattle had to withstand some long periods of pressure and created very little. But Torres and Chad Marshall did plenty to contain Toronto’s attack, and holding midfielder Ozzie Alonso was immense.

The defensive graft was needed, as Lodeiro was kept in check. The Uruguayan seemed to get on the ball with enough regularity, but rarely connected with the likes of Nelson Valdez or Jordan Morris. As a team, Seattle mustered just three shots, none on target, with both marks setting dubious MLS Cup final records.

La UNCAF confirmó este sábado el cambio del formato de la Copa Centroamericana que se jugará en Panamá en enero del 2017. Este cambio se debe a que Guatemala no asistirá al torneo debido a la suspensión que cae sobre el país centroamericano por parte de la FIFA.“El motivo de la presente es para hacer de su conocimiento que, debido a que la suspensión impuesta por la FIFA sobre la Federación Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala (FEDEFUT) no ha sido revocada, habiéndose cumplido la fecha límite fijada por CONCACAF, la FEDEFUT ha perdido irrevocablemente el derecho de participar en la Copa Centroamericana de UNCAF Panamá 2017. De acuerdo a lo anterior, se ha modificado el formato del torneo, el cual será jugado ahora con un formato de Liga Robin (todos contra todos)”, informó la UNCAF. Los primeros cuatro lugares de este campeonato clasificarán au-tomáticamente a la Copa Oro 2017 de CONCACAF. El quinto lugar deberá jugar un repechaje a partidos de ida y vuelta con el quinto lugar de la Unión Caribeña de Fútbol.Calendario: El torneo inicia el 13 de enero con el encuentro entre Honduras y Nicaragua, seguido de Costa Rica vs. El Salvador y, por último el encuentro entre Panamá y Belice. Todos los partidos se jugarán en el estadio Rommel Fernández Gutiérrez.

Dwyane Wade stared down former teammate Tyler Johnson on the left wing on a crucial fourth-quarter possession Saturday night and it seemed like everyone in the United Center performed their own version of the “Mannequin Challenge”.The crowd stopped and so did the Bulls bench in anticipation of a signature Wade move. Unfortunately so did everyone else on the floor as the movement stopped, if it ever started.Wade jabbed and put the ball in Johnson’s face on a swing through, causing an offensive foul, leaving Wade puzzled at the officiating.And even though it didn’t come back to hurt the Bulls in their 105-100 win over the Miami Heat, the play — and the quarter itself — highlighted a problem for the Bulls that’s seemingly bubbling beneath the surface, as they shot just 40 percent in the fourth and were outscored 25-22.A lot of times it looks like it’s Wade or Jimmy Butler taking their man off the dribble or bust, which can win more than your share of games but can also put you in a world of trouble when it comes to a margin for error.“We got into a little bit of a hole but Rajon got us a little bit of a push to get us a couple baskets, a couple free throws,” Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said. “That will be the big emphasis and focus in practice on Monday. We will really work on our fourth-quarter execution.”In a conference where two games separate the third place team in the East with the 10th place team, the margins are thin — and it doesn’t seem likely teams will break apart any time soon.Which means the Bulls’ fourth-quarter issues can come back to bite them, sooner rather than later. At 13-10 and on a two-game winning streak, it certainly doesn’t seem like a time for concern, but warning signs were all around in early January last season, when the Bulls were a 22-12 team after beating Boston on national TV, only to wind up missing the playoffs three months later. “Maybe a little bit. Maybe a little bit,” said Hoiberg when asked if it’s becoming mental. “I think early on our pace was still there, and when they made their run we hung our heads a little bit. We’ll get better, we’ll be better.”The ball stops moving, as evidenced by the Bulls’ 4.0 assists compared to 3.2 turnovers. Even though they’re no-where near a proficient 3-point shooting team and have stayed away from taking bad shots en masse, they take 6.5 triples in the fourth, a gigantic rise from being in the bottom five for the first three quarters.They hit those at a predictable 26.2 percent clip, not surprising when players like Nikola Mirotic and Isaiah Canaan have played bulk minutes in Hoiberg’s attempts to spread the floor.Shooting 37.3 percent in the fourth can’t all be put on the reserves as their struggles have been well-documented but the pressure placed on Wade and Butler usually manifest itself in the final 12 minutes as Wade’s age and But-ler’s workload begins to show.“They had good matchups and Dwyane had it going tonight,” Hoiberg said. “Those isolations have to happen further out on the floor. I think we had three possessions in a row where we missed wide-open shots. We gotta get the ball in a spot on the floor where we can have success.”As a result, the Bulls are outscored by an average 2.3 points in the fourth. It’s third-worst differential in the NBA behind two bad teams, the Philadelphia 76ers and Phoenix Suns.By comparison the Bulls had their share of late struggles last year but were a far more efficient outfit, actually be-ing the best 3-point shooting team in the fourth but were still outscored by nearly a point per game.Hoiberg is hoping and internally probably begging for Doug McDermott’s return to make those numbers a lot higher, especially from 3-point range where the Bulls are the league’s worst team at attempts, makes and effi-ciency, almost winning in spite of themselves.“Getting Doug back helps with our spacing. I’m confident we’ll hit double digit in threes again this season. I can’t tell you exactly when but I’m confident we’ll get there,” Hoiberg said.Whether the Bulls can continue winning with these two critical pieces working against them seems like it’ll be a miracle.

Tras ello se fue con todo en busca del empate y fue así que Gustavo Ferrareis sacó un zurdazo al borde del área para la igualdad (88’), en este pleito disputado en el Estadio Giulite Coutinho del municipio de Mesquita, Río de Ja-neiro. John Fox gritted his teeth on the Bears’ sideline as the anger welled in him. His blood had spiked to the boiling point. Then he pointed and yelled as line judge Sarah Thomas walked past.

Whether Fox directed his outburst at the officials or his team, only those near him or who can read lips know. But either was understandable in a deflating, decisive sequence in the final minute of the Bears’ 20-17 loss to the Lions on Sunday.Two straight completions into field-goal range had been negated by two straight holding penalties.One moment, the Bears appeared to have a first down at the Lions’ 16-yard line, a field goal in their back pocket and a couple of chances at a winning touchdown.The next, they were backed up to their own 37 facing first-and-30.It was maddening, demoralizing and, come to think of it, a perfect fit for the script of the Bears’ 3-10 season.“Those are parts of the game, things we have to clean up, get better and learn from hope-fully,” Fox said.The Bears were penalized 11 times for 139 yards, season worsts in both categories. None hurt more than those holding calls on left tackle Charles Leno and right guard Ted Larsen, which put the Bears’ potential win-ning drive in reverse.Quarterback Matt Barkley had converted two third downs to move the Bears to the Lions’ 43 with 58 seconds remaining. On first-and-10, he hit Cameron Meredith near the left numbers at the Li-ons’ 32. Meredith reversed field and raced to the 16. Another losing moment.This time, Larsen was called for holding defensive end Devin Taylor after passing off a stunt.“When I was playing it, it didn’t feel like a grab or hold or restriction,” Larsen said. “They called it, so there’s noth-ing you can do about that. But you can’t really recover from two holding penalties back to back.”The officials’ decisions could be debated, but their effect was certain and, for the Bears, brutal.Barkley threw four more passes, the last caroming off Josh Bellamy’s shoulder on fourth-and-11 from the Lions’ 44. Had Bellamy freed both his hands from cornerback Darius Slay in time to catch the pass, it would have been a first down. But a fourth-down attempt requiring that much yardage is low percentage, to say the least.“We gave ourselves a chance on fourth down, and then we’ve got to make plays,” Barkley said. “That kind of de-fines the whole game, though. Some of those drives were just stunted by us not making plays. It starts with me, starts up front and everybody across the board. Los Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz, anunciaron la tarde de este domingo, la incorporación del colombiano Jef-ferson Murillo a sus filas, como refuerzo para el Clausura 2017 de la Liga MX.

Llega procedente del Cali Deportivo, donde habitualmente se desempeñó como lateral izquierdo.

El zaguero de 24 años de edad, aseguró que su llegada al con-junto jarocho, se debió en gran parte a las aspiraciones que tiene el club a corto plazo.

“Me gustó mucho el proyecto, me gustó mucho lo que quiere el cuerpo técnico, lo que quieren los dirigentes, que es pelear y poder ganar un título, entonces eso me sedujo mucho”, co-mentó.

Sobre la situación porcentual que actualmente vive el equipo, Murillo dijo conocerla y estar dispuesto a apor-tar para dejarla en el pasado.

“Se sabe que estamos un poquito comprometidos con el promedio, con el descenso, pero esperamos traba-jar fuerte para hacer una gran temporada”.

Jefferson ya reportó con el equipo en la Ciudad de México, donde están realizando su pretemporada.

En el regreso de Julio César Chávez Jr. tras 17 meses sin subirse al ring por una fractura en la mano izquierda, el hijo de la Leyenda consiguió su victoria número 50 como profesional ante Dominik Britsch, aunque se le escapó el KO.

El primer round estuvo cerrado, ambos midiéndose. El mexicano puso a prueba a Britsch con algunos jabs. En el segundo cambio un poco el tono, Chávez puso el ritmo pero sin dominio claro.

Para el tercer round, el hijo de la Leyenda logró lastimar al alemán con un zurdazo al rostro tras un uppercut a la cara que alcanzó a meter Dominik.
