Astronomical Topper at Tatts (cont. from p1) With sales-goers still chatting about the 3.6-millionguineas paid by Coolmore for Newsells Park Stud=s

Galileo colt on the opening day of thesale, the ring filled once again as thebay full-sister to 2012 G1 Investec Oaks winner Was (Ire)was led in by Jennifer Rooney. TheLodge Park Stud employee has beenon the end of the shank in each ofthe last three years at Tattersallswhen first Was sold for 1.2-millionguineas to Demi O=Byrne beforeanother full-sister made 1.5-millionguineas last year when also knockeddown to Sheikh Joaan=s agent Nicolasde Watrigant.

Auctioneer John O=Kelly opened with a request for 1-million guineas, but Ibrahim Araci set the ball rolling athalf that amount, with Charlie Gordon-Watson joininghim in the early exchanges. Unsurprisingly, Coolmorealso joined the party as the asking price rose to 2.4-million guineas, but this time Magnier and his men hadto stand down as the determined French agent ensuredthe prized filly followed her year-older sister into Qatariownership. AI don=t know how to quantify her beauty--she=s amagnificent specimen,@ said De Watrigant as he faced apress pack which seemed to have doubled in size fromthe previous day. AWe bought her sister last year andwe feel she=s pretty special, so we didn=t want to missthis one. She=s got everything, but first of all, webought her because she looks like a proper racehorse.@De Watrigant confirmed that the filly will be sent toAndre Fabre. AHopefull, she will be the new Treve,@ hesaid. Reflecting on a rewarding year on the track for SheikhJoann=s runners, culminating with Treve=s victory inSunday=s G1 Qatar Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe, he added,AWe=ve won three Group 1 races this year, and theachievement of Treve in the Arc has encouraged SheikhJoaan to invest in more yearlings. The farm [Haras deBouquetot] is now set up and we=re ready to receive ourfirst stallion, Style Vendome (Fr).@ Al Shaqab Racing also bought Clare Castle Stud=s Seathe Stars (Ire) colt out of Three Moons (Ire) (Montjeu{Ire}) (lot 184) for 380,000gns and the second ofCarmel Stud=s good pinhooks--an Exceed and Excel(Aus) colt--for 320,000gns. The son of the Zamindarmare had been bought for 110,000gns as a foal. AlShaqab=s total expenditure over the two days, for 16yearlings, is 10,260,000gns.

Alluring Prospect... The Burns family=s Lodge Park Stud has long beenassociated with top-class racehorses. Along with theClassic-winning sister to the top lot, Seamus Burns bredher close relation New Approach, yet another EpsomClassic winner and now a leading young sire for SheikhMohammed=s Darley operation. Other members of theoutstanding family include Coolmore=s freshman sireAlfred Nobel (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) plus Europeanchampion filly Dazzling Park (Ire) (Warning {GB}).Few, if any, broodmares will have been responsible forthree consecutive seven-figure yearlings, but DamianBurns admitted his familywas not convinced thatAlluring Park=s yearlingwould follow her sistersto Tattersalls. AIt was a hard decisionto sell her and it=s stilltough to know that she=snot going to be aroundtomorrow, but her pricemakes that a little biteasier,@ he commented.AWe knew what we got for the last two fillies and wefelt that she is an even better specimen, but you neverknow what=s going to happen at that level. My youngestbrother, Jamie, did most of the prep with her. He=s nothere today, as he=s at college, but he did a great job.@

Alluring Park, who was trained by Jim Bolger forDamian=s father Seamus, is now 14 and has no foal thisyear, but is back in foal to Galileo. She is one of 12broodmares at the Co. Kilkenny farm. An older brotherPatrick Burns is also involved in the running of LodgePark Stud, while yet another Burns boy, Ronan, runsHerbertstown Stud. AWhen we plan our matings, it=sracehorses we=re trying to breed and though this is agood result today, the real excitement for us is whatshe goes on to do on the track,@ Damian Burns added. Paying tribute to the team at Lodge Park Stud, whichhas prepared 14 yearlings for this year=s sales, Damian=smother Patricia added, AThere=s Richard, Paul, PJ andIhor back at home and they all work very hard indeed.@As the Lodge Park team celebrated, Julian Dollar ofNewsells Park Stud, vendor of the 3.6-million guineascolt on Tuesday, strode over to shake Damian=s hand, saying, ACongratulations, we enjoyed holding the recordfor a few hours, but I=m really pleased for you.@

Another Millionaire... Early in the second session, Angus Gold was pushedinto seven figures when pledging 1.1 million guineas forlot 180, a brother to Arcano (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}),who won the G1 Prix Morny in the colors of SheikhHamdan colours and now stands at his DerrinstownStud in Ireland. "It is a family we know very well, and one SheikhHamdan has always followed as he selected Arcanohimself after he won the July S.,@ said Gold of theCoruff Stud-bred and -consignedson of the Daylami (Ire) mareTariysha (Ire). AArcano was avery good 2-year-old, but heunfortunately got hurt. TheMedicean half-brother [El Muqbil(Ire)] was better than the pageshows, and the full-sister alsogot hurt, but she is a beautifulfilly. This was a bonny horse bya very good stallion, and he looks a bit scopier thanArcano, who is a very neat horse.@ Referring to the first crop of the colt=s brother, headded, AWe=ve got some lovely yearlings by Arcano atthe farm and I=ve seen some nice ones here too. Sons ofOasis Dream are already looking very good, so let'shope this one can run. This is a tough market, we wereunder-bidder five times yesterday, but this was the oneSheikh Hamdan really wanted.@ The colt, whose family also includes the goodsprinters Gilt Edge Girl (GB) and Godfrey Street (GB),was also an object of desire for M. V. Magnier, theeventual under-bidder, and Grant Pritchard-Gordon,sitting with Russian owner Alexander Nezhenets. Gold was back in action quickly, signing for thefollowing lot (lot 181), Tinnakill House=s Teofilo colt outof Tasha=s Dream (Woodman), for 250,000gns. Laterpurchases also included first-crop sons of the Shadwell-bred Classic winner Makfi (Ire) and Arcano, each boughtfor 300,000gns, and a 400,000gns daughter of anotherfreshman, Lope De Vega (Ire).

Dream Scenario... Three of the top four yearlings sold on Wednesdaywere sons of Oasis Dream (GB), putting the Juddmontestallion in second position behind Galileo on theauction=s sires= list. Two went the way of SheikhMohammed=s team. Lot 262, the first foal of Craig

Bennett=s listed winnerAnnabelle=s Charm (Indian Ridge{GB}) realised 625,000gnsthrough The CastlebridgeConsignment. The sheikh=sadvisor John Ferguson was backfor more later when signing forBarronstown Stud=s son ofBriolette (lot 302), a half-sister toPilsudski (Ire) who is already the

dam of two winners by Danehill Dancer (Ire). SheikhMohammed=s spending spree continued Wednesdaywith another 13 yearlings added to Tuesday=s tally of19 for a total outlay of 8,005,000gns.

Brigid’s Boomers... The progeny of the Irish River (Ire) mare Brigid havelong proved popular at the sales, with two selling forseven figures here at Tattersalls. In 2007, CharlieGordon-Watson paid 2.5-million guineas for herdaughter by Sadler=s Wells (Ire), and four years later thesame agent spent 1.7-million guineas on anotherdaughter, this time by Galileo (Ire). At Keeneland in2001, Bill Farish paid $1.4 million for Brigid=s Sadler=sWells daughter Sequoyah, winner of the G1 MoyglareStud S. Brigid=s 2005 foal didn=t sell in the ring, but laternamed Listen (Ire), won the G1 Fillies= Mile at Ascot. Her latest Galileo daughter didn=t quite hit thoseheights, but still sold for 600,000gns to South AfricanJehan Malherbe of Form Bloodstock. He couldn=t revealfor whom he bought her, or where she might be trained, but said, AIt=s a lovely family, and she=s by the best sirein the world. When you buy a Galileo, you=ve got achance of buying a great horse.@ Lot 307, a Danehill Dancer (Ire) filly out of the Group 3-winning Galileo (Ire) mare Cabaret (Ire), joinsthe formidable Flaxman Stables operation after AlanCooper paid 525,000gns on behalf of the Niarchos Family. AShe=s a lovely individual from a lovely family andgoes to David Wachman, who trains [Group 2 winner]Duntle (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) for us,@ said Cooper.ALet=s hope she can run!@

Class Excelling... John Magnier missed out on Arcano=s brother, butconsecutive lots cost the Coolmore boss a total of650,000gns when a first-crop son of Rip Van Winkle(Ire) (lot 235) out of the dual-winning Danehill mareYaria (Ire) consigned by Camas Park Stud was knockeddown for 300,000gns, followed by a 350,000gnsdaughter of Danehill Dancer (Ire). The latter (lot 236),whose dam Yummy Mummy (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) is asister to multiple Group 1 winner Fame and Glory (GB),was another good sale for Andreas Jacobs= NewsellsPark Stud, which remains on top of the vendors= listwith nine yearlings sold for a total of 5,673,000gns. A total of 10 Exceed and Excel (Aus) yearlings havesold so far at Tattersalls for an average of 221,000gns,with the most expensive of these also going to Magnier. He paid 600,000gns for Glenvale Stud=s lot 282, a sonof Aymara (GB) (Darshaan {Ire}). The latter is the damof Byrama (GB), who won the GI Vanity H. atHollywood Park in June. Magnier, of course, standsExcelebration (Ire), a Group 1-winning son of Darley=sExceed and Excel, at Coolmore, having bought the horseduring his 3-year-old season. John Ferguson has boughtthree Exceed And Excels, giving a top price of220,000gns for a colt out of Pickle (GB) from theconsignment by New England Stud.

Japanese Attraction... The Duke of Roxburghe=s great filly Attraction (GB)(Efisio {GB}) famously was never presented for saleowing to a pair of crooked front legs. Her unusualconformation didn=t stop her from excelling on the trackin the colors of her breeder when trained by MarkJohnston, for whom she wonfive Group 1 races, incuding twoClassics. Now the dam of fourwinners and a listed place-getter,Attraction=s son by Montjeu (Ire)(lot 279) aroused the interest ofJ S Company of Japan, whowent to 450,000gns to buy thecolt from Floors Stud. He is to betrained by Yoshito Yahagi, whoconfirmed that in one way atleast he is not his mother=s son. AHe has fantastic conformationand a very good pedigree,@ heexplained. ALet=s hope he also has the talent displayedby his illustrious parents.@ Another Japanese buyer, Koji Maeda, was also inaction on Wednesday. The winning owner of hiscountry=s Derby this year with Kizuna (Jpn) (DeepImpact {Jpn}), who later won the G2 Prix Niel andfinished fourth in Sunday=s G1 Prix de l=Arc deTriomphe, bought a Dansili (GB) half-sister toAlessandro Volta (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) for 300,000gns.From the family of group winners Caspar Netscher (GB)and Poet (GB), which stretches right back to the MeonValley Stud foundation mare Reprocolor, the fillyrepresented the top price for the Weinfeld family=sHampshire farm at the sale.

Meon Valley also sold a pair of colts for 240,000gns--a Raven=s Pass grandson of Group 1 winner One SoWonderful (GB) on Tuesday to John Ferguson, and aNew Approach colt out of Kayf Tara and Opera House=shalf-sister Colorado Dawn (GB) (Fantastic Light) toCharlie Gordon-Watson.

Gone But Not Forgotten... The sole entry in the catalogue by the outstandingMonsun (Ger), sire of great horses such as Shirocco(Ger), Manduro (Ger) and more recently Novellist (Ire),made 300,000gns. Bought by John Ferguson, the colt(lot 122) is out of the listed winner Wells Present (Ger)(Cadeaux Genereux {GB}). Peter Stanley=s New EnglandStud consigned him for owner Baron Georg Von Ullman, who owned Monsun until his death a year ago. AHe=s abeautiful colt, very athletic, a stand-out,@ Stanleyoffered. AMonsun was a stallion I adored and we sentOuija Board [his brother Lord Derby=s multiple Group 1-winning racemare] to him hoping to get a filly.@Unfortunately Ouija Board (GB) produced a colt,Aegaeus (GB), but he is the winner of two races. Shehas a Dubawi foal, but Stanley said she is likely to besent back to Galileo, who was responsible for her bestperformer to date, Australia (GB). The 2-year-old coltwon the G3 Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf Trial S. inIreland in September, and the Aidan O=Brien trainee is anearly fancy for next season=s Classic races.

Freshman Sire Update... Dubawi=s son Makfi (GB) tops the first-season sires=table so far, with eight of his offspring selling for anaverage of 130,000gns. Two colts shared top billing at300,000gns. Shadwell bought a chestnut son ofWedding Gown (GB) (Dubai Destination) from the familyof Queen Elizabeth II S. winner Poet=s Voice (GB), whileJohn Warren signed for a bay out of the Salse daughterMill Guineas. Early on the first day Tony Nerses spent230,000gns on a son of the Montjeu (Ire) mare MaidinMaith (Ire). David Redvers, who stands Makfi at his TweenhillsStud for a fee of ,25,000, said, AI=m delighted with theway they are selling. For a first-season sire to sell ayearling for 300,000gns is fantastic. It=s a great returnfor breeders and I can=t wait to see them run. My onlyregret is that I don=t have a big enough budget to buythem myself.@ Through the first two days of the sale, four yearlingsby Ballylinch Stud=s Lope De Vega (Ire) have sold for anaverage of 182,500gns. The standout was the400,000gns paid by Shadwell for a daughter of theGalileo (Ire) mare Starry Messenger. David Redvers shelled out 400,000gns for GrangeconStud=s son of another first-season sire, Rip Van Winkle(Ire), out of the Group 3 winner Steel Princess (Ire)(Danehill), who has already produced GI CanadianInternational S. winner Sarah Lynx (Ire). The six bythree-time Group 1 winner Rip Van Winkle (Ire) havesold for an average of 168,333gns.

With the British HorseracingAuthority agreeing to the introduction of racing on thetraditional blank day in the calendar, the high-profilemeeting Apr. 18 will form part of a new one-year dealbetween the ruling body and Lingfield=s owners ARC. Itwill not be part of the move to introduce contractuallybinding prize money contributions from racecourses, which Arena has currently not committed to. PaulBittar, chief executive of the BHA, said, AI am pleasedthat we have been able to agree terms with ARC,although it is unfortunate that ARC felt unable to signup to the three-year prize-money agreement developedby the Horsemen=s Group and BHA. We considered it inthe best interests of the sport and its participants tosecure a commitment to prize-money in 2014 fromARC. This agreement will deliver a substantial increasein ARC=s contribution for 2014, an amount at leastequal to what they would have made under aprize-money agreement, while also delivering ARCcertainty over plans for their all-weather programmeand Good Friday. We welcome ARC=s ambitious plansfor staging this valuable fixture at Lingfield Park and, together with Great British Racing, we look forward toworking with them to make the day a success forracing from all perspectives.@ Tony Kelly, managingdirector of ARC, added, AWe are pleased to confirm ourongoing commitment to prize-money in a deal whichbrings benefits to the Horsemen, the BHA andourselves. ARC=s contribution to prize-money rose by18% in 2013 and will increase by a further 24% in2014. The terms of our agreement with BHA means wecan plan ahead for 2014 with much greater certainty. We have exciting plans for the all-weather programmeand the clarity we now have with regard to fixturenumbers will enable us to fulfill our commitments toincreasing prize-money.@ Full details of the initiative canbe viewed on www.awchampionships.co.uk.

DWYER WINS FIGHT AGAINST BAN Jockey Martin Dwyer learned yesterday that theBritish Horseracing Authority would not reciprocate acontroversial 56-day ban handed out during a spell inIndia. The one-time Epsom Derby-winning rider pickedup the suspension at Mahalaxmi in February beforelearning that it had been increased to eight months bythe Royal Western India Turf Club. It was later returnedto the initial 56 days on a second appeal. AI=m pleasedand relieved it=s all over, because it has dragged on foreight months,@ he told PA Sport. AI fought it the wholeway and I=m pleased I=ve come out the right side. I=vesaid exactly the same thing on the day of the race, theday after and every day since that I didn=t do anythingwrong. I think my time in India has probably come to aclose--I probably wouldn=t be welcomed back thereanyway. It=s sad in a way because I=ve had some greattimes there.@ The BHA=s Director of Raceday Operationsand Regulation Jamie Stier said, AIt was the BHA=s viewthat there were a number of areas during the processwhich fell short of being demonstrably fair and werenot in accordance with the principles of natural justice. We will be sharing with the RWITC the concerns theBHA set out to the disciplinary panel.@
