Have you ever watched the Brazilians, Spanish, Portuguese play football and wondered…. What’s the secret? Well from a young age, they are encouraged to exhibit - creativity, speed, running of the ball, ‘deadly finishing’ and dribbling skills. The Islanders Futsal Academy offers this opportunity!!!

As a sport, Futsal has for years been treated as a training game for football. Now with Futsal being treated as a proper sport with World Cups and regular tournaments and with professional leagues throughout the world, more people are wishing to play it seriously. Within Tasmania players involved in the academy have seen an exceptional improvement to not only their Futsal but their football also due to specific skills training at the highest level. The number of players making either representative football sides or state Futsal squads is a credit to the quality of the program.

Using a heavier, lower bounce ball, allows for more touches and better control. Futsal helps players improve their ball skills, and discourages any physical contact, allowing for a safer game. Players enjoy the challenge of playing a fast and skilful game which tests their abilities. We will be looking to push the players out of their ‘comfort zones’ and to work hard to achieve a higher quality in performance.

CoachingThe Head Coach of the Southern Tasmanian Academy is Paul Woodham, who recently returned from his trip from Brazil as the 16 Boys Australian Tour Manager, on this tour Paul studied under some of the best coaches in the world. Paul has a mountain of experience at National level and has taken several teams close to the National Crown. Paul is also a school principal and very up to date on the latest teaching and coaching methods.

Tasmanian Islanders Head Coach is Corey Smith who is based in Hobart Office. Corey travelled to Brazil in May 2008 as the Head Coach of the Australian Under 19 squad where he studied under some of the Worlds top Futsal Coaches at some of the World's top Futsal Clubs. Corey will be doing guest clinics which will be open only to Academy players throughout the year. There are also regular visits from other high profile local, interstate and international coaches. For example in 2009 we had Jo Burgess from the World Cup Matilda's Womens team attend.
