LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE KENOSHA COMMUNITY SAILING CENTER

I welcome all who read this to our 2015 Kenosha Community Sailing Center Catalog. It is a reflection of our continuing growth, of the Kenosha commu-nity, and an invitation to come and be a part of our activities at the KCSC. The KCSC is located at the Kenosha Yacht Club at Kenosha harbor on beautiful Lake Michigan. Our family focused organization has been established for the purposes of educating youth and adults in the sport of sailing, while partner-ing with the community, local organizations and our schools. We pride our-selves on sharing a fun, safety focused, sailing program for everyone, young and old. We focus our efforts to educate the community about the wonderful waters we are provided, working year round to bring the joy of sailing to our surrounding com-munity. As President of the KCSC Board, I am excited to offer this catalog and I extend an enormous thank you to all our advertisers. You have helped assure that the quality of our sailing program continues and we are grateful. This past year, we continued to see participation and commu-nity involvement grow. We welcomed more youth and adult students than our past years, and enjoyed sharing the joy of sailing with each and every one of them. We hope that you can join us for the 2015 season, and let sailing take hold of your heart, like it has for so many others. In anticipation of an even bigger year we have included our 2015 class schedule, our contact infor-mation and an upcoming schedule of events. I invite you to enjoy this catalog, read the articles, and learn more about our organization. ABOUT THE KCSC

The Kenosha Community Sailing Center (KCSC) is first and foremost an educational collaborative ef-

fort between the Kenosha Yacht Club (KYC) and local organizations and schools. KCSC’s primary goal is

to educate Kenosha youth in the sport of sailing while integrating academic, leadership, and life skills.

The KCSC also promotes access to the Kenosha Harbor and the resources of Lake Michigan.

The KCSC is always looking for individuals and busi-

nesses who would like to donate boats for use in our

sailing program. Unlike other community sailing cen-

ters, we do not charge our participants a hourly or

daily fee for the use of boats. We’re able to do this

thanks to a quality team of individuals donating their

time and labor for the upkeep of our boats and facili-

ties. We also gladly accept goods and services to help

us keep our rates the lowest you will find anywhere.

HISTORY

The KCSC was established in the spring of 2008 as a registered 501 (c)(3) nonprofit. In the summer of

2009, the KCSC created an introductory sailing course through collaboration with KYC members and

community teachers. In 2009, the KCSC also received a grant to pay for a boathouse building on the

KYC dock which provides the organization work, storage and sail loft space. This building has been

instrumental in allowing for the continued growth of the organization.

PARTNERSHIP WITH HARBORSIDE ACADEMY

Harborside Academy was one of the principle

partners at the inception of the KCSC and has

joined with the KCSC on a number of projects.

Harborside principal Bill Haithcock’s support of

the KCSC has been unwavering since its incep-

tion. In fact, three of the founding Board Mem-

bers of the KCSC were Harborside teachers. Over

100 students of Harborside Academy have

learned to sail at the KCSC over the past five years. Other KUSD schools, such as Curtis Strange, are

now coming on board and having their students experience the lifelong sport of Sailing. We hope to

increase KUSD participation in the KCSC in the coming years.

The Harborside Racing Team was started two years ago with the help of

Bill Haithcock. In the past two years, Harborside Academy has started to

compete in High School Regattas as part of MISSA, the Midwest Inter-

scholastic Sailing Association. The racing season goes from April through

June in the spring, and September through November in fall. There is

also a summer racing series that is open to all and not affiliated with

any High School. If your child wants to get involved in racing even if they

don’t attend Harborside or is interested in starting a team at their High

School, please contact the KCSC at: info@kenoshasailing.org.

MEET THE SENIOR YOUTH SAILING INSTRUCTOR: SABASTIAN DEHN

Sabastian Dehn has been sailing with the Kenosha Commu-

nity Sailing Center for 8 years. As a ten year old he got into

his first sailboat and fell in love. His first teachers were John

Burhani, Ed Montano and Jim Buck and they have continued

to be mentors for him throughout the past 8 years.

If you ask Sabastian what he likes most about sailing he has a

hard time coming up with something . There is so much that

he likes but when pressed he would say that it is "taking a

reach, going as fast as the wind will carry him and feeling like

I am flying with the wind."

When asked what he likes best about teaching others to sail

his answer was immediate. “I love watching the kids get to

the point of being able to sail on their own and I especially

enjoy working with those who are interested and want to

learn to sail."

Sabastian is a Small Boat US Sailing Certified Instructor and

teaches sailing for the Kenosha Community Sailing Center

this summer. He graduated from High School in May and will

be attending Gateway Technical College in the fall.

YOUTH SAILING PROGRAM The Youth Sailing Program is for students 8 to 18 years old. The goal is to become a confident sailor on one and two-person boats. Instructors are U.S. Sailing certified. Students will be split into small groups of 2 to 5 per instructor and class size is limited. Beginning students sail in the Harbor, older advanced students may potentially go on Lake Michigan depending on weather and lake conditions.

SUMMER YOUTH CLASS SCHEDULE 2015 You can enroll in any of these classes by going to www.kenoshasailing.org and click on Sailing Les-sons Calendar. From there you can enroll in any course we offer during the summer. Intro to Youth Sailing (1 Week Course): This introductory course will orient students to the basics of sailing. This class runs Monday - Thursday from 8:30am-11:30am or 12:30pm-3:30pm. Fridays are in-tended to either be a rain makeup day or open sail for those who have taken classes at the KCSC. Week of June 15 Week of July 6 Week of July 27 Week of August 17 Cost: $95, AM or PM Session Beginning Youth Sailing (2 Week Course): This course is intended to give students a more in-depth knowledge of sailing and teach all of the skills necessary to sail in the Harbor. ADULT SAILING PROGRAM Intro to Keelboat Sailing, May/June: This course teaches the basic principles of sailing and is taught on Lake Michigan using sea-worthy sailboats with keels. There are two 2-hour classroom sessions (6:00-8:00) followed by 3 on the water sessions (5:30-8:30). Curriculum includes terminology, knots, docking, rules of the road, sail trim and shape, crew teamwork, safety procedures, tacking/jibing, and downwind sailing. The five-session class starts on Monday 5/18 or Tuesday 5/19. Cost: $150 if you preregister, onsite registration $175. Book included in cost of class. Intermediate Adult Keelboat Sailing June/July: This course is a continuation of the Adult Intro class and builds confidence and independence through well-coached practice sessions. Curriculum includes helming and sail control, reefing, weather navigation, anchoring, motoring skills, safety and emergency procedures. This course can lead to qualification for checking out KCSC boats. You must be a member of the KYC to be able to check out boats. This class comes with a promise to connect student with a boat to crew on going forward! This four-session class will be held on the following days: Tuesdays, 6/23, 6/30, 7/7, 7/21 (5:30-8:30). Cost: $175 preregister, onsite registration $200 Accelerated Intro to Small Boat Sailing July: A limited-enrollment accelerated class focused on teaching the skills of Small Boat Sailing taught in Kenosha Harbor. There are four hands-on sessions on the dock and wa-ter. Class Dates: 7/20, 7/21, 7/24 (5:30-8:30), 7/26 (1/2 Day, AM or PM TBD) Cost: $175 if you preregister, onsite registration $200. Book included in cost of class. Accelerated Intro to Keelboat Sailing August: A limited-enrollment, accelerated version of the Adult Intro Sail-ing curriculum completed over 2 weeks. There are four hands-on sessions on the dock and water. Class Dates: 8/3 & 8/4 (5:30-8:30), 8/8 & 8/9 (1/2 Day, AM or PM TBD) Cost: $175 if you preregister, onsite registration $200. SAFETY & ATTIRE

All students and coaches are required to wear a lifejacket (PFD). It is recommended that you bring

your own personal lifejacket, which insures your size and fit, but we do have lifejackets you can bor-

row. Students do not have to know how to swim. However, it is entirely possible that you will end up

in the water, so you should be comfortable in deep water wearing a lifejacket. For adult sailors re-

member it is cool on the water, so please bring a jacket or sweatshirt. Soft-soled shoes (white soles)

are required. If it’s raining but there’s no lightning, we will sail, so bring a rain jacket. Sailing is a fun

sport, but it can be dangerous if sailors behave recklessly. Disregard for sailing instructors and reck-

less behavior will not be tolerated. Students will not be allowed to return. Refunds will not be given

to students who are removed for reckless behavior.

The Kenosha Yacht Club is proud of the Kenosha Community Sailing Center and we are thankful to all the volunteers who make it such a great organiza-tion. A special thanks to the sponsors and donors for your generosity. Your contribution helps the KCSC share Kenosha’s greatest natural resource, Lake Michigan. Even though the KCSC and the KYC are separate legal entities, as you read through this catalog you will start to realize there is a great partnership and many common goals. ABOUT THE KENOSHA YACHT CLUB

The Kenosha Yacht Club (KYC) is located adjacent to the Southport Lighthouse on Simmons Island in

downtown Kenosha. The KYC is a member of US Sailing, Lake Michigan Yacht Racing Association, Lake

Michigan Sail Racing Federation and the Regional Sailing Association. The KYC is a family oriented

club, offering many activities and services for both power and sail enthusiasts. We remain active

throughout the year with monthly membership meetings and social activities.

PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE KCSC & KYC

The KCSC is a collaborative effort with the KYC. Most of the active volunteers of the KCSC are KYC

members. The KYC is a social organization with diverse members who feel passionately about pro-

moting a cost-effective way to learn the sport of sailing. The KCSC is technically a joint venture with

the KYC but has to maintain separate finances and oversight boards so the KCSC can legally maintain

its 501(3)(c) tax status.

The Kenosha Yacht Club houses a restaurant that is open

to the public. Come enjoy great food, drinks and the best

view of Kenosha’s Lakefront. The Breakwater offers

lunch and dinner and is open seven days a week Memo-

rial Day through Labor Day, see website for winter hours.

You don’t have to be a member to enjoy a fresh breeze

and a wonderful meal. Most all of our social events occur

RACING AT THE KYC & BUCCANEER FLEET

Thursday nights are KYC race nights. In addition we race every other Sunday throughout the summer. Keelboats come to the KYC dock to pick up crew members, and if you have taken a keelboat class, you can crew.

Lake Michigan’s fastest growing one design fleet is Kenosha’s Buccaneer fleet. The fleet races both Thursday nights and Sundays giving everyone plenty of opportunities to get out on the lake. Why is this growing? The Buccaneer is relatively cheap as far as boats go. Competitive boats can be found for as little as $1000.

The Buccaneer gives you three-sail racing in a comfortable stable boat. It is typically raced with a crew of two. This simple sloop is a blast to sail, and easy to maintain. The Buccaneer Class is friendly and family oriented. If you are interested in learning more about this style of boat to eventually own and race, contact racecoordinator@kenoshayachtclub.com. Summer storage available on the KYC at a rate of $100 for the entire summer.

MEMBER PROFILE: JOHN BURHANI

I’ve known John Burhani for about 36 years now and if I were going to profile someone that has impacted and returned the favor to the KYC & KCSC, he is definitely tops on my list. J-Team Days John started sailing as an early teenager with first outings on Father Mac’s Tartan. That quickly parlayed into Hobie sailing with Mike Gallion off the beach adjacent to his home. At age 13 he could be found sailing by himself but didn’t weigh enough if the Hobie tipped over, so he brought a plastic gar-bage bag to increase his weight to right the boat. When John turned 15 he was recruited to sail with Jay Foght and John Weiss on Jay’s newly refurbished 40 year old Thistle. The trio soon became known as the J-Team (before Jiffy Lube) and began building a name for themselves - or at least painting it on ships in the Kenosha harbor. Every summer John and his friends seemingly lived on the dock at KYC. While Butterfly racing was his staple, Jay’s father generously granted the boys unlimited access to his C&C 29 - you can still see Rainbow sailing the Kenosha waters under the current stewardship of Jim and Kathea Buck.

Out And About As John moved past his teenage years windsurfing became his pas-sion. The wind and waves of Lake Michigan caused him to start the season with ice still floating and end the season sometimes after the Christmas holidays. The bigger the storm, the bigger the smile. He would sometimes call the Coast Guard to tell them he was going sailing and please do not come out to rescue me - I’m on a windsurfer and yes, I tip over frequently but “please don't rescue me from an epic day of fun!”

John’s windsurfing was fueled by Ralph Ruffolo and Southport Rigging. John agreed to work only if he was able to take off to sail if there was a “northeaster”. Ralph complied and the Kenosha News chronicled 30 years of John windsurfing and kiteboarding. Windsurfing and kiteboarding took John all over the United States and beyond - Maui, Florida, Texas, Caribbean, California, Mexico, Pacific Northwest, and more. Home Sweet KYC John’s very supportive and tolerant wife Heather made the rounds with him. When they were living in CA their daughter Emily was born. With family and Lake Michigan calling their names, they moved back to Kenosha in ~ 2002. John & Heather quickly bought a 30 foot sailboat (Saturday) and became anchor members at KYC. John was back home and Lake Michigan was happy to have him back. Only now rather than being inspired, John is in-spiring others to sail. He’s since upgraded to a 40 foot Jeaneau and is a regular volunteer at the sailing center providing instruction to newbies with an eye to picking new crew for racing. Its more of an honor to sail with John vs. a favor since he’s proven he’s still able to single hand Zippitydoda just like the Hobie. He’s won nu-merous ‘single handed’ races that include the single handed Chicago to Mackinaw Island - only ~ 330 miles... So, if you’re interested in trying sailing and if you’re wondering how the wind and water can impact your life - just ask John and look for the smile! Author: John Weiss, KYC Member and John Burhani's life-long friend. John Burhani lost his courageous battle with cancer on May 5, 2015, shortly after this profile was written. He sails on in the hearts of those at KYC and his legacy endures through the con-tinued education of sailors at the KCSC.

KYC OFF-SHORE RACING

In addition to regular Thursday night buoy races and Sunday sailing/races, KYC members can be found competing in other regattas.

Our sailors have a long tradition of success in Lake Michigan off-shore races. Similar to the famed Chi-cago-Mackinac race, the Hook is a 3-day race up Lake Michigan, around Death’s Door at the top of Door County, and down Green Bay.

KYC boats regularly compete in many other races such as the Lake Michigan Singlehanded Society’s short-handed races, the Queen’s Cup which is a night race from Milwaukee across the lake and other local races between Racine to Waukegan.

BOOK REVIEW: THE VOGAGE OF THE FROG

The Kenosha Community Sailing Center is all about encouraging our students of all

ages to learn about sailing, water safety and water ecology. Our courses go a long

way to meet these educational goals and we also encourage students to read all that

they can about other people's sailing experiences from a variety of perspectives.

I am an experienced sailor, a KYC member and retired librarian so as you can imagine

sailing and reading are my passions. The last 22 years of my teaching career was

spent as an elementary school librarian. One of my greatest challenges was convinc-

ing reluctant readers that they should read. Another challenge was helping students

find the right book. As a school librarian, I often recommended books to students that I enjoyed that were

about water adventures and boating. One of my favorite adventure authors that I always attempted to steer

my students toward was Gary Paulsen. Gary Paulsen is an award-winning author of survival stories. All of his

stories are based on his own experiences and some of those stories are about the sea and sailing.

My favorite Gary Paulsen book is "The Voyage of the Frog." David, 14, has just inherited the Frog, a 22-foot

sailboat from his uncle Owen. Owen was dying and his last request was to have David sail the Frog out to sea

off the California coast to spread his ashes. While out of sight of the coast David is caught by a storm and is

knocked out by the boom. After a series of adventures David becomes a better sailor and more confident in his

own abilities. In the end David is found by a research ship but would have to abandon the Frog to be rescued.

Instead, he decides to take some supplies from the ship and sails the Frog 350 miles back to the California

coast.

Another book to keep your eye on is "Caught by the Sea: My Life on Boats" which is another book about boats

that Paulsen authored. I just downloaded it to my Kindle and can’t wait to read it, you might want to check
