Tallahassee Area Chapter of NIGP December 2010 Newsletter

It looks like I got ahead of myself in the last newsletter...this will be my last address to you as President of the Tallahassee Area Chapter of NIGP. Let me say again, with heartfelt thanks, I enjoyed serving as your 2010 Chapter President. I hope you all registered for our Holiday Banquet where we will install your newly elected Officers and Board. TACNIGP has another great year in store for you. As this holiday season is upon us, we tend to get caught up in all the hustle and bustle. Take the time to enjoy your family and friends and share in the happiness of each other’s company. Remember to take a moment to relish in the blessings we have been given. I keep reminding my children about the reason for the season (usually after each commercial advertising a new toy). We all like new and shiny toys, but it can’t be our focus. With a new year around the corner, now is the time to focus on where we are going and how we will get there. Please use all the resources and relationships your Chapter has to offer to help you reach your personal and professional goals. There will be many opportunities for you to grow this year. If you have suggestions, please relay them to the new leadership, myself included. Be sure to thank your Holiday Committee – Don Tobin, Brenda Wells and Donna Smith – for putting together the Holiday Banquet. We appreciate you guys! Have a wonderful holiday! Message from the Vice-President

Brr its cold! The holidays are coming, the holidays are coming! Where's the snow? Have you gotten your Christmas tree yet? Have you decorated it yet?

We do not have a speaker for this month but we have a great program scheduled. The Holiday Committee has planned a great Christmas luncheon, good food and lots friendship. Do not forget to bring your stuffed toy! New Officers and Board members for our chapter will be installed and members to be recognized for their efforts and help during our activities during the past year. I have enjoyed serving as Vice-President and look forward to serving you next year.

It is also time to reflect and give thanks for what we have and give to others who need our help. It will make you feel good inside and bring a smile to your face.

2010 HOLIDAY LUNCHEON This year’s holiday luncheon will be held at the Civic Center on December 14th. Everyone is asked to bring a new stuff animal for children.

MEMBERSHIP DUES REMINDER Just a reminder that it’s time for our annual membership dues. The annual dues are $35.00 but if you pay before March 1st, you will receive a $10.00 discount. Please remember that you can’t renew your membership until January 1, each year. If you have any questions please contact any of your board members or send an email to info@tacnipg.com.

November Monthly Chapter Meeting

Date: November 9, 2010 Location: Tallahassee/Leon County Civic Center Number in Attendance: 64 Call to Order: President Wendi Sellers called the meeting to order at 12:03 PM. Pledge: Donna Smith, Dept. of Management Services Invocation: Norma McLaughlin, Attorney General’s Office Minutes: A motion was made and seconded to approve the October minutes. Motion passed. New Members and Guests: One guest was announced; Ms. Allison Norman, the new Purchasing Specialist Supervisor for the Dept. of Business and Professional Regulation. Job Opportunities: No new job opportunities were announced. President: President Sellers reminded the membership that lunch prices for members will be $8 and for guests and non members $16, effective January 11, 2011. Members may renew memberships on the web January 3, 2011. The membership cost is $35, but those that renew prior to March 1, 2011 are entitled to a $10.00 discount. The TACNIGP Holiday luncheon will be held at the Civic Center on Tuesday December 14 – Please bring a new stuffed animal for the annual charitable campaign. Treasurer

: Treasurer Don Tobin - Checking - $34,981.47; Money market - $107,971.79; Total - $142,953.26.

Introduction of Speaker: Vice President Threewitts introduced Mr. Chris Carney of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). Mr. Carney is a 16 year veteran of FDLE and is currently serving as the DNA Investigative Supervisor. He explained the history of CODIS (Combined DNA Index System), NDIS (National DNA Index System) and the DNA collection here in Florida. He provided the group with surprising statistics and gave some examples of how the use of DNA had helped solved crimes.

Elections: The Canvassing Committee delivered the Election results to President Sellers who read them to the membership. The 2011 Officers and Board of Directors are; President – Donna Smith, Vice President – Robert Threewitts, Treasurer, Mark Lovell, Secretary – Susan Barr, Board Members – David Callaway, Charles Day, Gloria Dixon, Bill Spencer, Ed Valla and Brenda Wells.

Holiday Committee

: Chair Don Tobin reminded the membership of the date (12/14) and that this years’ guest price is $15. He asked that those planning to attend bring a new stuffed animal for distribution between the Children’s Home Society and the Tallahassee Police Department.

Scholarship Committee

: Chair Vida Addison announced that 21 applications were received and that the Committee would meet after the general meeting to select a winner. The winner will be announced at the Holiday Luncheon on 12/14.

TALLAHASSEE AREA CHAPTER OF NIGP, INC. Date: November 16, 2010 Location: Leon County Purchasing Bid Room, 2284 Miccosukee Road Members Present: Robert Threewitts, Vice President; Don Tobin, Treasurer; Donna Smith, Secretary; Board Members: Brenda Wells, Susan Barr, Charles Day, Ed Valla, Vida Addison Members Absent: Wendi Sellers, President; Keith Roberts, Immediate Past President; Gloria Dixon, Board Member. Also Present – Treasurer Elect, Mark Lovell and incoming newsletter editor, Jessie Moseley. Vice President Robert Threewitts called the meeting to order at 3:31 PM. A motion to approve the Minutes for the October Board meeting was seconded and approved. Officers Reports:

a. President – No report b. Vice President – Robert has lined up speakers for January, February and May. A

special thanks to Sonya Avant for obtaining the November speaker, Mr. Chris Carney, FDLE.

c. Treasurer – Provided the P & L statement for October 13 through November 16. d. Secretary -no report

Old Business: 2011 Reverse Trade Show theme – Pirates – Come Steal the Show. A motion to approve was seconded and all present were in favor. Committee Reports: 2011 Trade Show – No report. Nominating Committee: No report Volunteer Committee: No report. Holiday Committee: The committee has purchased centerpieces and gifts for the December 14 event. Scholarship Committee: Chair Addison announced that Kevin Randolph won the $1000 scholarship and will be invited to the Holiday Luncheon.
