DearChurchFamily,
OnNovember11th,Iwalkedintoouryoungestdaughter’sroomandwasbombardedbyChristmas!That’sright,Christmas.Therewerecoloredlightsalloverthewalls,atinselChristmastreeaboveherbedwithhomemadeornaments,andtheoverwhelmingsmellofpinefromherChristmasscentedcandle.Thatdoesn’tevenbegintotakeintoconsiderationthatshe’sbeenplayingcarolsonthepianosinceNovember1st.Ifyouhaven’tfigureditoutbynow,youshouldknowthatthisisKendal’sfavoritetimeoftheyear,andshewilldoanythingtomakeitstartasearlyaspossible.
Buthere’sthething.ThebestpartofChristmas—inmyopinion—isthewaiting.It’stheanticipationitbrings.It’stheadventofsomethingnewcomingintoourlives.ThegoodnewsforusasfollowersofJesus,isthatChristmasmeansexactlythat;thebeginningofsomethingnewinourlives.Thinkaboutit.YoungMaryfindsherselfinthepresenceofanAngelwhotellsherthatshe’sgoingtobeartheSonofGod.Sheisgoingtobringloveandlifeintoahurtingworld.Sherespondswiththesimplewords,“HereamI,theservantoftheLord;letitbewithmeaccordingtoyourword.”Weallknowthatbeganatleastninemonthsofwaiting.Therewastimeforhertoponderwhatallthismeant.Therewastimetothinkabouthowthisnewlifemightchangeeverything.Maryhadtime.
WeareabouttoentertheAmericanholidayseasonof“toomuchtodoandtoolittletimetogetitdone.”YourcalendarsarefillingupwithlotsofChristmasactivity.Listsarebeingmade.Preparationsarehappening.Injustafewweekswe’llbeoverwhelmedandovercommittedtotheseasonthat’ssupposedtobring“GlorytoGodinthehighestheaven,andonearthpeaceamongthosewhomhefavours!”
Maybemydaughterhasitright.MaybeweshouldstarttheChristmasseasonearliersothatwehaveplentyoftimetoponderwhatitreallymeansinourlives.MyprayeristhatyouwilldojustthatasweapproachChristmasday.TakesometimeinthisbusyseasontoponderwhatJesus’presenceinyourlifemeans.Whyhasthisbabyborninamangerchangedyourlife?PerhapsyoumighteventakeafewthingsoffyourtodolistsothatitcanbefilledwithGod’spresenceinsteadofChristmaspresents.
AsweenterintoourfourthChristmasseasontogether,Icontinuetobeblessedtobeyourpastor.IlovetocelebrateChristmaswithyou,andIpraythatthepeaceofChristwillfillyourheartandhomethisyear.
