Thank You from the StaffA sincere thank you is offered to our many Center volunteers during this
holiday season. Those of you who instruct our classes, work in our coffee or gift shops, library or meal site, sit at the front desk, help at our special events, care for the beautiful plants and facility itself, contribute to the monthly publication of the Sunshine News, serve on our Board of Directors, or assist in any other capacity here at the Siouxland Center for Active Generations...we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Our Center would not be the great place it is without your help...you are the heart of our “home” and may you be blessed for all that you do.

JANUARY 2016
In January, we welcome Toots Pittman as our Volunteer of the Month. You may recall that Toots, who has been a member of the Siouxland Center for Active Generations since 2009, was our 2015 Rivercade Queen. In addition to serving the Center as royalty, Toots has also volunteered at the front desk for a number of years. She always greets visitors with a warm smile and a kind word, which she says is her favorite part of the job. In the past, she has helped with special events and been a part of the Knitting & Crocheting Group. She has some nice crocheted items as proof; just ask her sometime!
We are glad that you are a part of our “home” Toots. We will see you at the January Birthday Party, on January 11, where you will receive your personalized cake, courtesy of Iris (Pastry Parlor) and candy, courtesy of Palmer Candy.

Fitness Room AssistanceAttention anyone with fitness or health
related questions…BCU nursing students will be in the Fitness Room January 12, 13, 14, and 15 between the hours of 8:15-11:30. They would be more than happy to answer any “health questions” for you.
Christmas Party RecognitionOur Multi-Purpose Room was filled to capacity on Monday, December 7,
as we celebrated our annual Christmas Party. We would like to take this time to thank the following businesses for their donations of treats: Casa De Paz, Countryside, Brookdale/North Park, Embassy, Heritage at Northern Hills, Regency Square Care Center, Touchstone Living Center, and Whispering Creek. We thank Fareway/Southern Hills location for the water bottles, Bickford Cottage and Linda Cravens for the donated goody bags distributed by Santa, Mrs. Claus, and Linda. Thanks to Recover Health and Dixie Gors for the snacks and assistance that day. Door prizes were provided by Sandy Welch of our meal site, Hamilton Touchless Car Wash, Ideal Wheels, Palmer Candy, the Siouxland Center for Active Generations, and anonymous donors. We would also like to thank Santa Claus a.k.a. Larry Harrington and Mrs. Claus a.k.a. Rita Potter. We thank the Active Generations Chorus, under the direction of Colleen Mahoney and accompanied by Sandy Call, as well as BJ Heitzman, Maria Timothy, and Ron McKewon who entertained also.
*Special thanks go to our volunteer members...those who worked the days prior to the event and the day of the event...without you, activities such as this would not be possible. Thank you for always helping out when needed; you are greatly appreciated.
Linda’s NotesHere we are in a New Year – how did that happen so quickly? I hope this
finds each of you ready for an exciting new year here at the Center. In the first half of 2016, we hope to see Fitness Room improvements (cue
the happy noises) and we’ll be saying “so long, but come visit” to our PACE neighbors (prompt the sad sounds). These are some of the building changes we can expect.
We will also be working on membership numbers and programming changes, too. We hope to increase the already-wonderful programming opportunities available. Please continue to get your programming suggestions to us about what you want here at your Center. And please continue to talk to friends and acquaintances about us – we want to see our membership increase, too! We are currently around 1,200 members strong. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to report in next year’s “New Year” column that we have 1,500 members enjoying services, programming, and social opportunities?!
You are the reason the Siouxland Center for Active Generations has the members we have. Your membership dues; your friendliness to new members; your great suggestions about programming and other improvements you want; your volunteer hours; your “liking” us on Facebook; your donations; your willingness to talk about Active Generations throughout the community – these are all concrete ways you help make the Siouxland Center for Active Generations a vibrant community anchor. Thank you to each of you for all you do throughout the year.
And Happy, Happy New Year to you and yours!

Welcome to the Library! Our Book Club venture last month with, “The Wagon’s West” series by Dana Fuller Ross, was a great idea. It renewed the interest in this series and our members enjoyed rereading this selection. We will meet on January 7th at 10:00 a.m. to discuss “Sex-Crime Panic: A Journey to the Paranoid Heart of the 1950s” by Neil Miller. This book choice covers crime committed in Sioux City. This should be an interesting topic; please join us.
I want to thank our many volunteers who take their time to help us out, especially during this busy time of the year. You are greatly appreciated.
See you in the library.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE INIOWA WHEN:
1. IF YOU WEAR SHORTS & A PARKA AT THE SAME TIME, YOU MIGHT LIVE IN IOWA.
2. YOU KNOW SEVERAL PEOPLE WHO HAVE HIT A DEER MORE THAN ONCE.
3. YOU OFTEN SWITCH FROM “HEAT” TO “A/C” IN THE SAME DAY....AND BACK AGAIN.
4. YOU SEE PEOPLE WEARING CAMOUFLAGE AT SOCIAL EVENTS (INCLUDING WEDDINGS).
5. “VACATION” MEANS GOING EAST OR WEST ON I-80 FOR THE WEEKEND…
OR GOING TO ADVENTURELAND.6. IF YOUR DAIRY QUEEN IS CLOSED
FROM NOVEMBER THROUGH MARCH, YOU MIGHT LIVE IN IOWA.

What a fun and busy month we have had! We put out the word that we had a great Christmas Show and ended up getting plenty of entertaining road trips. Our longest one took us to the Pender, Nebraska area with a great variety show performed by our Center members at the Golf Clubhouse for their bank’s Heritage Club. Yes, I did put in a few good words for membership! We had Ron and Maria singing for them, Dick and BJ’s lip-sync, as well as the Fantastics and the Tappers. We did a great show for a wonderful audience at Holy Spirit, but kept on going with our Christmas Spirit to Countryside and Whispering Creek. What fun we had and I think our audiences had just as much fun. With our great Santa suits, how could we go wrong?
We had our annual Christmas party at Lori’s again and as always laughed and ate too much. We party as much as we dance!
We are working hard to finish our first new dance of the season before we have to let Jane go on her honeymoon. Jane has certainly done a great job with the choreography, so now it’s up to us to make her proud. Then we can get started on the next one.
It’s nice to continue our Friday practice and think it’s helped everyone, me included. My memory and transmission need plenty of work. But this super group makes it all worthwhile.
With the season along come various illnesses and such, so hopefully the new year will bring us all good health.
Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and will continue the spirit throughout the New Year!“Get your body out of the way and let your spirit soar!”
~ BJ Heitzman
We have been enjoying our Christmas music, which allows practice of our automatic movements, to the language of “roundish”. We are working more on our foxtrot and jive, as well, so it is just a never ending learning experience. What else gives both our minds and our bodies such a workout?
We will miss our angels-- Dennis and Myrna. They did stay a little longer this year in order to welcome their new grandson, but will take their usual trip south after Christmas, but hopefully return a little quicker. Jane is taking her honeymoon in January as well and perhaps Dick will have to take some time off for his knee (that is hard to imagine); so we might be off for January. Be sure to check if you were planning on coming to join or visit us. Hopefully the time will go fast and we can get back together as soon as possible.
In the meantime: “Don’t be afraid to be amazing”…and keep dancing.~ BJ Heitzman

BINGOOur Bingo attendance is up and here’s
why…Bingo is played twice a week at the Center; Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. We have (2) 10 cent Blackouts in the a.m. and (2) 10 cent Blackouts in the p.m. and (1) 25 cent Blackout in the p.m. On Thursdays at 10:00 we play a red card for 25 cents. You can play up to (4) cards; all money goes for the Blackout. The first Tuesday of the month we play a $1.00 Blackout on a paper card for all of the money we take in. It’s easy to see why the attendance is up; money to win, laughs to share, and an occasional snack or two! Stop in!

SNOW TIME TIMBER ART
J o i n S h e l l y B o h l k e o n Wednesday, January 6, at 12:30 in the Game (Penny Bingo) Room. This month the Timber Art project will be dedicated to snow, but this cute 2x4 project will leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling inside and a smile on your face. Inexpensive, easy to make, and doesn’t take up much room…how can anyone say no?
In the event of public school closings, the Siouxland Center for Active Generations will be closed. If there is a weather related late school start, we also will be opening late. Please stay tuned to your local T.V. and Radio stations for the latest information.

Young at Heart Line Dancers Happy New Year; may it be a great, happy, and healthy one for all of us! All line dancers had a nice December because we had our annual Christmas
buffet with all the office crew and Marilyn from the coffee shop joining us for some really good food! Also, we are so proud to have all of our beginning dancers join us and become an important part of our “family”.
We had two weeks off, so we could spend the holidays with our “other (real) families”, but now we’re ready to get back into dancing and start working on the Fall Follies routines. We will also work on all dances that we don’t do often and have our beginners join in more classes with us. I am extending an invitation to come and watch us, or be a beginner and share the dancing fun we have!

Musical News with Pinky NEW+EXCITING+WONDERFUL=JAM SESSION! This new event is
called a “Jam Session”, but it is so much more than that and here’s why. We don’t only do guitars and singing; we may have a fiddle player or two, sometimes harmonica players, we know a flutist who is pure magic, you will be hearing washboards, ceramic jugs and spoons clacking. We will include poetry, stand-up comedy, magic tricks, and more. Bring your talent and see what happens. We need both performers and an audience. Now does that sound like JUST A JAM SESSION? Maybe more like a “SHIN-DIG”? We may have to rename this fun!
Some of the future activities I have in mind are an open mic day or putting on a show or two at the Center and other ideas that will be presented by the members of our Shin-Dig. Come on by, join in, and be part of the experience.

“The Wedding”George and Edith had been high school sweethearts 50 years ago, but had gone their separate ways after graduation. Then, two years ago, their paths crossed again, and they began seeing each other regularly. With age 75 just around the corner, they decided life was too short, and they might as well spend the rest of their lives together.Excited about their decision to marry, they went for a stroll to discuss the wedding, and found themselves in front of a drugstore. George said, “Let’s go in. I have an idea.”Addressing the man behind the counter, George asked, “Are you the owner?” The pharmacist answered, “Yes sir, I am. How can I help you?”George: “Do you sell heart medications?”Pharmacist: “Of course.”George: “How about support hose?”Pharmacist: “Definitely.”George: “What about medications for rheumatism, osteoporosis and arthritis?”Pharmacist: “All kinds.”George: “How about waterproof furniture pads and Depends?”Pharmacist: “Yes, sir.”George: “Hearing aids, denture supplies and reading glasses?”Pharmacist: “Yes.”George: “What about eye drops, sleeping pills, Geritol, Preparation-H and Ex-Lax?”Pharmacist: “Absolutely.”George: “You sell wheelchairs, walkers and canes?”Pharmacist: “Yes, indeed. But why all these questions?”George smiled, glanced shyly at Edith and replied, “We’ve decided to get married and we’re considering you for our bridal registry.”

Here I sit in the coffee shop following the well-attended Christmas party. We had so many great volunteers; that helped a lot!
My pie sale just before Thanksgiving went very well. I sold out in three hours! Thanks for your support of this sale and all of your daily purchases. I do love coffee drinkers and their financial support!
I have missed a few days this winter due to bad weather. I told Kerry that
this may happen and she understands me...I am just under the “90
radar”, so I have a good excuse!
I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and is
looking forward to a healthy 2016, as I am. I am thankful
for all of the good friends I have at the Center.

Too Old to Date Joke:The neighbors thought it was odd, but 93 year old Morton was dating again. One Monday morning Morton woke up with a funny feeling that something important happened last night. It was during breakfast, that Morton finally remembered what it was. He had proposed to his date Greta. But what she answered he just couldn’t seem to remember. Morton picked up the phone and dialed. “Hi Greta”, said Morton, “I have a funny question for you, do you remember last night when I proposed?” “Oh my gosh” gushed Greta, “I’m so glad you called, I knew I said yes to somebody but I just couldn’t recall who it was!”

If you’re noticing improvements around the Center, thank our friends at Northwestern Mutual! Nine NWM Financial Representatives came to Active Generations Friday November 13 (just past the Sunshine News December deadline) and tackled cleaning storage rooms, light fixtures, and displays; fixing small but pesky plumbing issues; hanging pictures & display pegs; winterizing the front garden and all sorts of “honey-do’s.” Northwestern Mutual gave well over 22 volunteer hours in conjunction with their 2015-2016 United Way Campaign participation; NWM representatives appreciate the opportunity to learn more about the agencies United Way supports. Northwestern Mutual representatives learned where their campaign dollars go; United Way was once again supported; and Active Generations crossed off many “to-do’s.” Friday the 13th was certainly a lucky day!
Sioux City Lions Come ThroughThere will be more improvements to our Fitness Room
soon because the Sioux City Lions Club has awarded us $2,500 for equipment. Improvements will also include tearing down the room’s northside wall (with the help of a Missouri River Historic Development award), which will give us more room for the equipment. That improvement will be scheduled sometime in the next few months; in an effort to keep costs down we are working with Klinger to schedule between other larger Klinger projects.
We are looking forward to other collaborations with the Lions in the future. (For example: you may see an Eyeglass Drop-off by the Gift Shop soon!)
So let’s all send a BIG thanks to the SC Lions for their support!
