Rest assured that there will be plenty of health related information at this year’s Successful Aging Forum, but you may be surprised to hear that the arts—music, dance, movement, painting, theatre, even quilting, crafts, etc—can have a significant impact on your health and longev-ity. The arts are much more than simple entertainment. Whether you are enjoying the arts or participat-ing in them, you will be stimulating your mind, promoting a healthy social environment, and you may even choose an art that keeps you physically fit as well. Did you know that the arts are often used as therapy in the healing process? Research shows that older adults who continue to participate in the arts tend to stay engaged in community life, maintain their personal income, and maintain their social networks. They remain healthier longer. This year’s event will be held at the Hampton Roads Convention

Center and will be hosted by none other than Hampton Roads’ own Dick Lamb. He will guide us through a day packed with:✦ Fun✦ Entertainment✦ Exhibitors ✦ Door prizes galore✦ A catered lunch✦ Demonstrations of various

forms of the arts

✦ The presentation of the Senior Hero Award

✦ An art expo competition (you pick the winner)

✦ The Seniors Got Talent Finale

✦ The Physician Panel

Take a look at this issue of GoodHealth Magazine for all the details. At the cost of $20 there’s no better value for your dollar. I encourage you to sign up for the Successful Aging Forum today.

ExtravaganzaI can understand if some of our readers are wondering how we can call this year’s Successful Aging Forum the biggest, best, all-star extravaganza ever! After all we’ve hosted Dr. Oz, Pat Boone, Richard Simmons and other national celebrities. So what makes the 2012 Successful Aging Forum on May 18, at the Hampton Roads Convention Center the ‘biggest, best, all-star extravaganza’ of all? Simple, there’s more entertainment, more health information, more prizes than ever (including 3 Pocomoke River Cruises for 2 with the TowneBank Senior Partners and SeniorHealth travelers. These 3 grand prizes will be presented to the Seniors Got talent, Art Expo, and Senior Hero winners) —and don’t forget about ‘the arts.’ Why not simply focus on fitness? Or brain health? What about healthy eating, or alternative medicine? Or any of a host of other topics that bring us a bit closer to talking directly about our health.

The Arts

Dick Lamb will be followed by MaryAnn Toboz, Executive Director of Tidewater Arts Outreach. She will begin our journey through the arts as she introduces the multi-talented Elbert Watson. Elbert Watson has enjoyed a long and successful career as a dancer and teacher. A former principal dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Watson has traveled the globe as a principal dancer, director, teacher, choreographer, and collaborator at uni-versities and with regional and national

dance companies throughout the US and in Germany, New Zealand, Australia, and the Caribbean. Mr. Watson will teach us why stretch-ing and strengthening are vital for maintaining a strong, healthy and supple body and why joint flex-ibility, spatial awareness, posture, balance, and core muscle strength are increasingly important as we age. He will demonstrate how he utilizes his love of dance to keep seniors and adults fit in his early morning pilates and ballet exercise programs.

Next you will be introduced to Connie Ralston and ‘Baleza: Drum T h u n d e r T h a t Moves Your Bones.’ This unique art form uses drums and rhythm instru-ments from around the world to teach unity through diversity, helping people to discov-er their abilities to communicate and express joy together. You will be surprised by the power of the drumming experience, and the impact drumming can have on our health and wellness. The internationally acclaimed Barbershop Quartet, Acclaim!, will then take the stage. Tens of thousands

of people of all ages have enjoyed their music and humor. They are a long-standing member of the Barbershop Harmony Society who specialize in sing-ing family-quality, traditional songs in close harmony, a cappella. Experience Acclaim! and be encouraged in a wonderful art form enjoyed by every generation. Poet, playwright, actor, and journalist D.D. Delaney will take center stage as he demonstrates how the arts are a special form of human communication, fulfilling the human need to express what’s in the heart. This communication brings people together in meaningful ways. It also takes discipline and practice. Mr. Delaney’s presentation will focus on writing poetry—saying what you have to say in your own unique voice—then shar-ing it with others. A couple of short per-formance samples will be included. Mr. Delaney’s cre-dentials include performance poet-ry, theatrical proj-ects including his solo performance of his sixth annual holiday special, “The Concise Dickens’ Christmas Carol,” which he adapted from the original in 2006. He has published two col-lections of plays, “Lunar Fool and In the Pastures of the Sun;” a book of poetry, “Collected Poems from the Consciousness Wars;” and several pamphlet-sized works of poetry and journalism.

Meet Me At SAFDr. Boyd W. Haynes, III, has been acknowl-edged by his peers and patients for his out-standing contributions to the field of ortho-paedics in Hampton Roads. He is consistently recognized as one of Hampton Roads “Top Docs” for orthopaedics, and will be one of our panelists at this year’s

Successful Aging Forum. Working with Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, Dr. Haynes provides some of the most advanced orthopaedic procedures available for the hip and knees. In fact, Dr. Haynes’ practice is the only one in Virginia to provide outpatient total joint replacement of the knees and hips. Additionally, they are one of only a few practices to offer computer navigated direct anterior hip replace-ment, endoscopic carpal tunnel release, custom matched partial and full knee replacement, and reverse shoulder

replacement. Dr. Haynes is a Richmond native who graduated from the Medical College of Virginia, where he also completed his orthopaedic residency. After receiving a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Haynes joined the Orthopaedic & Spine Center (OSC) in 1992, and special-izes in sports medicine and in treatments for the hip, knee, and shoulder. Notably, Dr. Haynes performed the first outpatient total knee replacement in Virginia and pioneered the development of OSC’s outpatient total joint replacement program. Dr. Haynes and his practice work with Mary Immaculate Hospital to provide educational seminars and materi-als to the general public about a variety of orthopaedic and pain management topics. They offer bone density screenings to the public to raise awareness of the need for regular bone density screening. Have Dr. Haynes answer your health and wellness questions at the Successful Aging Forum on May 18, at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.

Dr. Anthony Carter

Dr. Anthony Carter is truly a front-runner in Orthopaedic Medicine. He was the first to perform the Direct Anterior Hip Approach also known as the “Jiffy Hip” in the state of Virginia. He has taught this procedure to hundreds of surgeons, many of whom have come to Mary Immaculate Hospital to observe, including faculty from UVA, Emory, Dartmouth, and VCU. “Of all the innovations in orthopae-dics recently,” Doctor Carter explains,

“I truly believe that the one that has had the greatest impact on patient recovery, and ability for speedy recovery is the “Jiffy Hip” or the Direct Anterior Hip Approach. As the first surgeon to perform this procedure in Virginia (starting in 2006), and having performed almost as many of these procedures as all other surgeons com-bined in the Hampton Roads area, the team at Mary Immaculate Hospital and myself have really perfected the treatment and care of these patients.” Dr. Carter’s reputation brings patients from great distances, even from out of state, to receive their care at Mary Immaculate Hospital. Recently, Dr. Carter has begun to pioneer another innovative technique, the tourniquet-less knee replacement surgery. This new and innovative approach to surgery has many ben-efits for patients including a quicker recovery, less pain, decreased post-surgical complications, and a speedier return to full function. “Studies in orthopaedics conclude that two of the most important fac-

tors for a successful outcome relate to surgeon experience and hospital experience,” says Dr. Carter. “We are the leaders in both and as a result have achieved a 5-star status with HealthGrades* in most major ortho-paedic categories, a feat that no other hospital in this area can claim.” To learn more about the proce-dures Dr. Carter performs or to reg-ister for one of our seminars, please visit our website www.hrosm.com under Upcoming Presentations or visit Hampton Roads Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine on Facebook. You can also call our Marketing Department at (757) 873-1554 Ext 409.

*HealthGrades Inc. is a U.S. company that develops and markets quality and safety ratings of health care providers, including hospitals, nursing homes, physicians and dentists. Quality rat-ings are devised from publicly available patient safety data and analyzed with proprietary technology developed by HealthGrades.

2011 Senior Hero, Gustavia Wise, with Richard Simmons

“Catching a small glimpse inside the creative process, being privy to the expression of joy, love, sadness, personal experiences the artist may have lived through, and perhaps even loss and regret. To be handed these feelings and to be so infected by them that the viewer is evoked to respond and feel them too; that is art.”

Take Action To Lower Your Blood Pressure

Blood Pressure Level (mmHg)

Category Systolic DiastolicNormal < 120 and < 80

Prehypertension 120-139 or 80-89High Blood Pressure

Stage 1 Hypertension

140-159 or 90-99

Stage 2 Hypertension

≥160 or ≥100

Blood pressure level information provided by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Did you know that 1 in 3 adults have Hypertension?

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. If the pressure remains above the normal range of 120/80 or less it can lead to a greater risk for stroke, heart attack, or other heart damage. Take action today to lower your blood pressure by follow-ing these quick and easy steps:

• NuTRiTioN: Choose low-sodium products. The American Heart Association recom-mends consuming less than 1500 mg of sodium a day. Read the label and look for words such as,

“unsalted,” “no-salt-added,” “reduced sodium,” “sodium-free,” or “low in sodium.” A diet high in fruits and veg-etables has been linked to a decreased risk of both hypertension and stroke.

Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids have positive effects on hypertension and cardiovascular disease by relaxing arteries and thinning the blood.

• HEAlTH: Make an appointment to get a physical with your Primary Care Physician to get your blood pressure checked. Don’t have a PCP? We have you covered! Call 889-CARE to find a physician today!

• BAlANCE: Reduce your stress through laughter! Humor can give us a more lighthearted perspective and help us view events as ‘challenges’, thereby mak-ing them less stressful and more positive. Laughter connects us with others. Just as with smiling and kindness, most people find that laughter is contagious, so if you bring more laughter into your life, you can most likely help others around you to laugh more, and realize these benefits as well.

• FiTNESS: How are high blood pressure and exercise connected? Regular physi-cal activity makes your heart stronger. A stronger heart can pump more blood with less effort. If your heart can work less to pump, the force on your arteries decreases, lowering your blood pressure. Take a walk for 20 to 30 minutes on at least 3 days of the week. Taking the stairs can be an easy and convenient way to slip some exercise into your day! Increasing your activity will improve your overall sense of well-being as you lower your blood pressure.

Being an active member of Bon Secours Senior Health is an excellent way to lower your stress and stay active. Check out our Trips & Events on page 14, and join in the fun.

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven played music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.” As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. recognized in this quote, greatness is not found in position, a momentary action, or a single heroic deed of courage. True greatness is found in the faithful actions of everyday life. In Daniel Marshall Bon Secours joins the host of heaven in proclaiming that we have found ‘a great bus driver who does his job well.’ Daniel is an inspiration to our team and to our community, and has received one of Bon Secours’ highest honors

— he is the recipient of the 2011 Dedicated Service Award. Daniel provides transportation to the sick and elderly who cannot get to their medical appointments. He does so with the greatest of care and compassion, playing an important role in the healing process. Here is an excerpt from an unsolicited letter received from an employee of Davita Dialysis: “My window looks out on to the parking lot and I witness the kindness and compassion with which Daniel treats each patient. He is a true ambassador of good will. I believe that healing others is not just done by the medical care we provide but also by the compassion with which we treat others, and Daniel is a very vital part of that healing process. He is professional and punctual, but also remarkably kind and caring. He treats each patient with dignity and concern. In fact, I call him St. Daniel!” Please join us as we gladly join the heavenly host in congratulat-ing Daniel Marshall, recipient of the 2011 Dedicated Service Award.

For the past 15 years I have worked with two of the most fabulous people that the good Lord put on this good green Earth. I know that’s true because I’ve travelled most of the world and these two individu-als stand out among the crowd of folks I’ve met. Still, I guess it’s true that “all good things must come to an end”… and I don’t suppose arguing or complaining will do me one lick of good.

Carol Hogwood and Jean Stapleford helped to make our community a better place through their tireless service to oth-ers as volunteers for Senior Health. They greeted visitors, answered phones, deco-rated the office, prepared our deposits, helped to oversee trips, registered people for events, and brought sunshine in no small quantity everywhere they went. I wouldn’t argue if someone claimed that they were the reason for the phenomenal success of the Senior Health Program. Jean, God rest her soul, passed away on August 19, 2011. To say that she is sorely missed could not be more severely understated. Carol has been asked to support an office at DePaul Medical Center. While they certainly need her skills in that office, it will leave a gap of love here at Senior Health. Carol and Jean have been more than volunteers—they have been family to us—and we miss them dearly.
