This Week Tuesday 30th Year 10-13 Visit to UCol Friday 3rd Mufti-Day: Youthline Friday 3rd July End of Term

Term 3 Monday 20th Start of Term 3

Tena koutou katoa

Welcome back after the weekend. Week 12, and the end of Term, a period unlike any in

our History. But we have survived, we have learnt some very real life lessons, and we

have created many new memories. People have been kind to each other, we have

developed a new vocabulary, and we have a new appreciation of the benefits of safe

hygiene practices, including the age-old need to wash and dry hands thoroughly.

For our little Country, there have been a number of positive outcomes from our

Lockdown experience. Although a little tarnished by the events of the past fortnight, our

sense of National unity is at a long term high. As well, we have a very real appreciation

of the outstanding Leadership of our Prime Minister, and her Advisors. The standing of

New Zealand on the World stage is unquestioned, as our united efforts to fight COVID 19

have provided a template for other Nations, many of which have been less agile in

dealing with this catastrophe. In contrast, the poor decision making of a number of

World Leaders has had catastrophic, ongoing,

consequences for the people in their

Countries. I have a brother who has lived long-

term in London – he is horrified about the

poor response of the British Government.

So a term like no other. However despite everything Teaching and Learning has continued, even during the restrictive stages of Lockdown. Most Students have risen to the challenges of this unprecedented time, and we can be justifiably proud of their ongoing development.

We celebrate their success in many ways – Honours Wall, Hui-ata-a, Assemblies, Tall Poppies, PB4L Reward Cards, Newsletters, a word of praise or encouragement etc. Please talk to your child/children about how their term went, about their School Work, and about School generally. Ask them about the things that have gone well, and congratulate them on their successes. Take the opportunity as well to set some goals for term three, and identify one or two areas to try and improve.

For our NCEA Students, time is passing very quickly – they have only one and a half terms left to build on their haul of Credits at Levels 1, 2, and 3. The rules of NCEA have been modified to take into account the disruption of Lockdown, but I can’t stress enough the importance of maintaining dialogue with your child, and their Deans (Kaiarahi & Kaiawhina), about the progress they are making towards their NCEA targets.

Next term will be another very busy time, and there is a great deal to look forward to including the rejigged Winter Sports Season, and Skiing.

At this time of the Year we are normally celebrating many, many highlights of events and activities that have occurred over the previous weeks, and particularly the first half of the Winter Sports Season. However, in these unusual times, we have been virtually housebound because of Alert Level restrictions.

However, the great news is that preparations for the Winter Sports Season have begun and all codes will begin competition after the break. This is something we are all holding out for, and the chronic lack of sport will surely make the season ahead one to savour.

Have an enjoyable break, and try and spend some quality time with the family - see you

all in two weeks.

Nga mihi nui

Tall Poppies from Learning Street – Week 11

New Principal The New Principal, Craig Dredge, will be starting his tenure here at the start of week 2

(July 27th), after the holidays.

Planning Ahead Could you please inform us if you know of anyone who is intending to enrol children at

TAS between now and the end of the year, and/or the start of 2021. This assists us

greatly with Planning and organisation.

We are experiencing exciting Roll Growth, particularly in the Junior School, and do our

best to avoid making unnecessary changes and disruption to classes.

Mufti-Day

On Friday we are holding a Mufti-Day to

support Youthline. This is a very worthwhile

cause and one we support whole heartedly.

Gold Coin Donation please!!

School Grounds We love seeing the School Grounds, and facilities, used

during the weekends and holidays. Please remember to

leave things tidy, and look after School Property. The

School belongs to us all – we ask that you respect that

fact.

End of Term Term2 finishes at 2.45 on Friday. Term3 begins on Monday 20th July.

Supporting Your Child’s Learning –

Reading The holiday break is a long time away from

books, and essential reading practice, for many

children, in particular our Primary aged (Year 1-

8) students. It would be wonderful if all children

could spend some time each day during the

holidays reading, or being read to. The benefits

will be long term. Taihape Library is also well

worth a visit.

Some work on learning or revising basic facts,

and spelling words for our younger students

would also be time well spent.

Quotes of the Week

Ripper Rugby Last Wednesday two Coaches from the Wanganui Rugby Union visited to take Rippa Rugby with the Classes from the Junior School. Each Class took part in a 45 minute session involving games, skills, and activities. The Coaches were awesome, and the children responded in kind, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Thank you Wanganui Rugby!!

Under 15 Rugby On Saturday the TAS Team had a convincing win over Awatapu College in the second grading game of the delayed season. The boys have really started the Season well, playing an exciting brand of fast, open rugby. We look forward to the season proper after the holidays.
