About the Flagship Conference
Introduction Letter
The European Congress on Biotechnology is the leading biotechnology conference in Europe, organised by
the European Federation of Biotechnology. The 16th biennial event will take place in the beautiful and
historic city of Edinburgh, Scotland. The scientific programme is being designed to cover all sections of
biotechnology, including:
Environmental and green biotechnology, microbial physiology, microbial synthetic and systems
biology, applied biocatalysis including industrial systems and synthetic biology, industrial
biotechnology, biochemical engineering and medical biotechnology.

About the Flagship Conference
Key Facts on Biotechnology in Scotland
The life sciences sector is worth over £3.1 billion to the Scottish economy annually.
Life sciences and biotech research in Scotland attracts £334 million funding per year – 15 per cent
of the UK total.
Scotland hosts one of the largest life science clusters in Europe with significant international
presence in research, development and manufacturing.
Edinburgh BioQuarter, a landmark £600 million life sciences facility, makes Scotland one of the
world’s top ten centres for biomedical commercialisation.
Scotland has a long and remarkable history of medical and scientific discovery stretching back
200 years; it has always been at the forefront of medical innovation.
In 2010, Scotland’s life sciences companies attracted £36 million of equity investment.
Government supports for early-stage ideas, encouraging new business with the Proof of Concept
Programme.
80 per cent of Scotland’s life sciences industry is based within 50 miles of the cities of Edinburgh,
Dundee and Glasgow allowing easy access to Scotland’s research groups.
Scotland produces a disproportionately high number of life sciences and biotechnology graduates,
making it attractive as a location for drug research and development.
Five of the world’s top 10 life sciences companies are based in Scotland.
Scotland has been named one of the ‘Top 5 Global Locations’ for biotechnology research by
respected industry magazine Fierce Biotech – (Source : Fierce Biotech 2007).
More medical research per head of the population is conducted in Scotland than anywhere else in
Europe, making it one of Europe’s fastest growing sectors.
Life sciences in Scotland have access to around 60 university and research facilities.
Scotland’s life sciences sector has access to 17,000 research staff and strong links with Europe,
Asia and the US.
Scotland is world leader in terms of collaboration, funding and research excellence.
Scotland is home to more than 630 life sciences organisations, including Charles River
Laboratories, Life Technologies, Johnson and Johnson and Millipore, employing over 32,000
staff.
