IN OUR PARISH
Now that the parish has both a parish house and a proper rectory we are becoming ever more
aware of what it takes to create and maintain a garden, and this has led us to be more
observant and appreciative of all the hard work it takes to keep our parish grounds groomed,
tended and beautiful.
Our Outdoor Environment Team includes a crew of men and women who work largely unnoticed. One
day it may be someone working alone pruning the bushes in front of church; another day it may be several
people on their knees planting and tending the continually changing display of flowering plants in the garden
surrounding the St. Raphael statue, or one of our more adventurous volunteers out on the lawn tractor. Take a
moment the next time you’re here to stop and enjoy the beautiful results of their efforts.
And the beauty doesn’t stop there. After you’ve taken in the sights and scents of our outdoor gardens
step into the worship space and notice how our Indoor Environment Team continues to combine flowers and
plants with fabrics and symbols to create a visual representation of the liturgical seasons and feasts. Remember
how the solemn purples of Lent faded into the lily-white of Easter and the Spirit-red of Pentecost (complete with
seven flames!) and, more recently, transformed into the flowing-white of the Feasts of the Most Holy Trinity and
the Body and Blood of Christ.
We know that none of this just ‘happens’ but too often we forget to express our gratitude to all those
faithful volunteers who share their time and talent with us throughout the year. So, the next time you see
someone pruning a bush or planting a flower, ironing a length of fabric or attaching blossoms to a tree branch,
let them know how very much we appreciate all that they do. Because of their work we are able to extend visual
hospitality to all who come through our doors and to enhance the prayer of all who join us in worship. Thank
you, Ministers of the Environment, both indoors and out!!

This note comes as a sincere thank you to all who helped to make the Kentucky 2012 Mission Trip possible. Thank you for your prayers for the success of our mission. Your gener-ous financial support made it possible for us to help two families. We re-roofed the home that was significantly damaged during the March 2nd tornado. Our team also helped to make Aaron and Melissa’s trailer home safer by building stairs and a deck as well as repairing the plumbing and electrical systems. Your support also helped toward the rebuilding of St. Luke Church in Salyersville which was completely destroyed. Additional funds went to the Magoffin County
“Hands” program for mothers and babies as well as another Magoffin County program which will help families who lost homes get re-established. In addition to the projects mentioned above, our team members worked on the Foley Center, a housing unit for hundreds of volunteers who come to eastern Kentucky each summer. We are pleased to announce that a St. Raphael team will return to St. Vincent Mission next year from April 20-27, 2013. Our new team leaders will be Paul and Fran Treder (233-2988) and John and Linda Petek (233-5730). God bless, Tom and Maureen Donovan Team Leaders for NOLA 2010, NOLA 2011 and Kentucky 2012

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – (MK. 14:12-16, 22-26)
Phil works as a clinical social worker in a school for troubled kids. For Phil it’s a dream come true, but he wasn’t sure that it could ever happen. You see, Phil is also a priest. After ordination he worked in his Diocesan Youth Ministry Office and did relief work in parishes, but Phil really wanted to be a Social Worker. So he petitioned the head of the religious order to which he belongs and after several meetings, endless forms and three years of classes Phil earned his Master’s Degree in Social Work.
Today Phil believes that it’s not only in church on Sunday that he lives out his call to priesthood but also in the weekday world of the young people he serves. In fact, because public monies fund the school, most of the kids don’t even know that he’s a priest. What they do know is that he cares about them, that they can trust him, and that if they let him he will do whatever it takes to help them.
“This is my body…this is my blood…” As a priest Phil has probably said those words hundreds of times; but it is as a social worker that he has lived them. His altar of sacrifice looks more like an old oak desk than a square of gleaming marble, and the place where he puts his life on the line is the holding area of the local jail. But Phil’s secular work has put him squarely in the middle of the most sacred of actions, giving his own body and blood so that others may live.
At our Baptism each one of us was baptized into the priesthood of believers – gifted with the Body and Blood of Christ so that we, in turn, might become the Body and Blood of Christ for others. Phil found his truest priesthood in the upper room of the secular world, the same upper room to which most of us are called. Phil’s desk is his altar. At what altar do we serve? For whom are we willing to become the Body and Blood of Christ?

**ATTENTION: PARENTS**
In this day and age kids are constantly bombarded with negative peer and social
pressure, TV shows, movies, internet, music and other elements contrary to our
CATHOLIC FAITH. Do we understand the PROBLEMS our kids are facing today? Are we good examples
of our Catholic Faith? Parents, we have a difficult task ahead of us. Take an hour each week, have some
quiet pray time and ask Our Lord “WHAT DO YOU THINK I SHOULD DO?” Your answer will come along
with blessings you need for strength. The Real Presence of Our Lord is waiting at the chapel to be asked
for our help. Please call Kathie Reed @ 920-539-6871 to arrange your desired weekly holy hour appointment
with Jesus…
