Ballet School

TheBalletSchoolpridesitselfonprovidinghighqualityclassicalballetanddancetrainingforstudentsofallagesandabilities.Thestructureofeachclassisbothchallengingandencouraging,withemphasisplacedondevelopingproperdancetechniqueandetiquette.PerformanceopportunitiesareofferedthroughouttheyearforAdvancedleveldancestudents.Theend-of-yeardancerecitalinJuneprovidesaperformanceopportunityforstudentsofeveryleveltosharewhattheyhavelearnedoverthecourseoftheyear.

§ AlainaOlivieriisamovementartistandcollaboratorwithRochester,NewYorkbasedprofessionalcontemporarydancecompaniesBIODANCE(MissyPfohlSmith)andHanlonDance&Company(EranDavidP.Hanlon).SheisalsoaguestperformerwithKDiehlDanceworks,MelanieAcetoContemporaryDance,KTInsights,HeatherRoffeDanceandDaystarDance.Sheperformslocallyandnationallyinfestivals,theaters,galleries,andUniversitiesandappearsindanceoncameraandphotography.OlivierigraduatedSummaCumLaudewithherBachelorofArtsDegreeinDancefromTheCollegeatBrockport.ItwastherethatshewasawardedtheFriarsFoundationAwardforTalentandAcademicAchievementinthePerformingArts.PriortohermovetoBrockport,OlivieristudiedatTheSchooloftheHartfordBallet,NYSSSAatSkidmoreCollege,andSUNYGeneseo,whereshereceivedtheHubertandGertrudeChanlerScholarshipforExcellenceinDance.Ms.OlivieriservesasHeadoftheBalletSchoolatSt.Peter’sCommunityArtsAcademy.

Tap1-Ages8+(45minutes)(notrainingrequired)ElementaryTaptechniqueandterminologyisintroduced.Thisclassemphasizessimplerhythmsandtheproductionofclearsoundswithtapshoes.Tap2–Ages10+(45minutes)(atleasttwoyearsoftrainingrequired)Thisclasscontinuesthedevelopmentoftaptechniqueandterminology.Tap2willfocusonclarityofsounds,increasingspeedandmorecomplicatedrhythms.JazzDance–Ages10+(45minutes)(somedanceexperiencesuggested)Studentswillstudyjazzdancetechniquesoftenseeninmusicaltheaterandincommercial/entertainmentindustrieswhileimprovingcoordination,strength,flexibility,andmusicality.Classincludesawarm-upwithstretching,isolations,andstrengtheningexercisesandthenmovesacrossthefloortoworkonturns,leaps,jumpsandruns.ModernDance–Ages14-18(1½hours)(somedanceexperiencesuggested)Studentswilldevelopfundamentalmovementskillsandbodyawareness.Focusisonfullbodyintegration,andmovementexplorationasaformofindividualandartisticexpression.Thisclasswillincludefloorwork,partneringandimprovisation.AdultTap–Ages18+(1hour)(6weekFallSession-notrainingrequired)AdultTapisforadultsandseniorswhowishtogetbacktotappingorwanttolearnhowtotap.Thisclasswillintroduce(orreview)basictapdancestepswhichdeveloprhythmicskills,andmusicality.Eachclasswillincludewarmups,acrossthefloorexercises,andashortcombination.Tapshoesarerecommended.AdvancedDanceClasses*requiresstudentstoattendatleasttwoclassesperweek,haveatleastthreeyearstrainingandhavepermissionofinstructorBallet4/5–Ages13+(1½hourstwiceaweek)Achallengingclassthatrequiresstrengthandstaminaformorecomplexadage,pirouetteandallegrocombinations.Thisclasswillpayattentiontofinedetails,useoftheupperbody,breathofmovementandexpressionaswellasincreasinglyadvancedrepertoryofsteps.Pre-Pointe/Pointe1–Ages13+(45minutes)Fordedicatedandmotivatedballetstudents,thisclasswillintroducetheuseofpointeshoes.Tobeconsidered,astudentmustdemonstratesignificantlegandfootstrength,balance,andsteadyexecutionofexercises.Buildingontechniquegainedfromlongtermballettraining,beginnerpointefocuswillbeonbalanceandplacementwhilewearingpointeshoes,progressingtosimplemovementcombinationsbytheendoftheyear.Pointe2–Ages15+(1hour)Tobeconsideredforthisnextleveloftraining,studentsmustdemonstratesignificantprogressinoverallstrength,balanceandexecutionofbeginninglevelpointeexercises.Studentswillfurtherdeveloptechnicalproficiencybyengaginginexercisesthatrequiregreaterspeed,control,strength,staminaandcomplexity.

BalletSchoolDressCodeProperdanceattireisimportantincreatingaproductivelearningenvironmentindanceclass.Pleaseadheret0thedresscodeasitallowsthestudentabroadrangeofmovementandprovidestheinstructorwiththeabilitytoseethestudents’bodyandmakenecessarycorrections.Followingthedresscodeestablishesgoodworkethic,respect,discipline,unity,focus,andenergyduringclass.

• MusicalBeginnings:Acoursedesignedforyouandyourlittleone(s)toexplorethebuildingblocksofearlymusiceducation,creativemovementandeachother.Focusingonbeingdevelopmentally-appropriate,theclassesprovideanaturalwaytoexperiencemusicalconcepts,suchastempo,pitchandvolume,space,shape,time,force,flowandrhythm.Playingmusicalgameswithspecialprops,wediscoverwhatourbodiesandvoicescando.Percussioninstrumentshelpusexpressthebeat.Singingtraditionalnurseryrhymesteachesrhythmthroughlanguage.Wemaylearntoappreciatemanytypesofsoundsbylisteningtorecordingsofvariousmusicalgenresandforms.Creativeresponsesandimaginationdoemerge.Infants,toddlersandpreschoolersdelightinanopenandplayfulenvironmentofdiscovery.Caregiversenjoythespecialbondingtimewiththeirlovedonesastheyexploremusicandmovementinacreativeclass.

• ChristineMcElhennygrewupintheCoalRegionofPennsylvania,singingincommunitychoirsandperforminginschoolmusicalsfromayoungage.SheholdsaBachelorofArtsdegreeinPsychologyfromLafayetteCollegeinEaston,PA,wheresheenjoyedmovingandperforminginBlackBoxtheaterproductions.Itwasalsotherewhereshefirstdiscoveredtheartsofmindfulmovementandlistening.Shestillpracticesthesetoday.SoonaftermovingtoGenevain2009,sheandhertwodaughterswerefirstexposedtoSt.Peter’sCommunityArtsAcademythroughasimilarmusicandmovementclassandhavebeengratefulfortheexperienceeverysince.Christinebelievesparentingisagiftandthatworkingwithchildrenisanhonor.Sheenjoysservingthecommunityinthiscreativeway.

Community Choirs Faculty: Wendra Trowbridge and MaryAnn Hamilton
Choristersaretaughtmusicliteracyandsingingskills,andreceivetraininginallareasofmusicianship.Eachchoirisgivenregularopportunitiesforperformance.Everyfouryears,theSeniorChoirtransformsintotheSt.Peter’sCommunityArtsAcademyTourChoirandmembershaveanopportunitytotraveltoEuropetoperform.OurnextEuropeanTourisbeingplannedforFebruary2022.TheCommunityChildren’sChoirshavebeenunderthedirectionofWendraTrowbridgesince1996.Mrs.TrowbridgeisanalumnaofIthacaCollegeSchoolofMusic,andcurrentlyteachesvoiceatHobartandWilliamSmithCollegesaswellasatSt.Peter’sCommunityArtsAcademy.
§ WendraTrowbridgereceivedherBMandMMinVocalPerformancefromIthacaCollegeSchoolofMusic.Shehasextensiveexperiencewithprivatetrainingofvoicesatalllevels,iscurrentlyadjunctvoicefacultyatHobartandWilliamSmithCollegesandhaspreviouslytaughtatIthacaCollege.ShehastaughtvocalmusicintheNewYorkpublicschoolsystemandhasconductedhonorchoirsforCentralandWesternNewYorkschools.HerownperformancesincludenumeroustourswiththeCelebrantSingersthroughouttheUnitedStatesandfourteencountries.ShehasalsoperformedinvariousrecitalsandoperasthroughoutNewYorkStateincludingGlimmerglassOperainCooperstown,NYandIthacaOperaAssociation.WendraisMusicalDirectorforthreeSt.Peter’sCommunityArtsAcademyChildren’sChoirs.

TheVoiceStudioofferslessonsforstudentsofallagesandabilities.Studentswilllearnthebasicconceptsofsingingandhowtoproperlyusethevoicefromaclassically-basedapproach.Studentswillbeexposedtomanydifferentstylesofmusic;repertoirewillbeatthediscretionoftheinstructorandtailoredtowardstheindividualstudent’sinterests

ThePianoStudioprovideslessonsforstudentsofallagesandabilitieswiththegoalofdevelopingahighlevelofmusicianshipthroughthetraditionalapproachofnotereadingcombinedwithanemphasisonmusictheoryandperformance.Eachweek,studentsattendaprivatelessonanda45-minutegroupclassinourkeyboardlab.Recitalsareheldseveraltimesayearandallstudentsareencouragedtoparticipate.

Performance.TroyhasalsopursuedgraduatestudiesinPianoPerformanceatSyracuseUniversity.TroyisanactiverecitalistandaccompanistintheRochester/Genevaarea.Hehasperformedsoloandchamberworksinvariousvenuesthroughouttheregionandisaversatilepianist,comfortableinseveralstylesofmusicfromcocktailpianotoclassical.TroytaughtpreviouslyintheRochesterareaandhashadseveralaward-winningstudentsinvariouspianocompetitions.Mr.SlocumisapastadjunctpianofacultymemberatHobartandWilliamSmithCollegesandHeadofthePianoStudioatSt.Peter’sCommunityArtsAcademy.
• MargaretSawyerhasspentthelast27yearsmaintainingaprivatestudioandworkingasan
elementaryandpreschoolteacherinthetownofShortsville.Sheteachesallagesandenjoysplayingpianoandviolaperformances.Megstartedpianolessonsattheageof5withhermother,JanetB.Smith,andstudiedtheviolawithNancyHuntoftheRPO.Atage12,shecontinuedpianolessonsthroughtheEastmanSchoolofMusic’scommunityeducationprogramwithHarrietZimmerman,andalsocontinuedviolalessons,playingintheYouthOrchestra(RPYO).MegattendedHoughtonCollege,graduatingwithaBachelor’sdegreeinMusicEducation.Shebeganofferingprivatelessonsaswellasworkingasaschoolmusic/elementaryteacher.ShelaterreturnedtotheEastmanSchoolofMusic,focusingonpianoandearlychildhoodmusic.Shecreated“MunchkinMusic,”amovementandmusicprogramforpre-schoolchildren,whichinvolvestheuseofrhythminstruments.

• MengZhoubeganherprofessionalmusiceducationatagefive.From2008–2014,sheattendedtheEastmanSchoolofMusicandMaterofMusicdegreesinPianoPerformanceandLiterature.In2019,sheearnedaDoctorofMusicArtsdegreestudyingwithProfessorDouglasHumpherys,thechairofthePianoDepartment.Dr.ZhouservedasteachingassistantforEastmanSchoolofMusicformanyyears,winningtheEastmanSchoolofMusicTeachingAssistantPrizeforExcellenceinTeaching.AdditionalawardsandhonorsincludetheBanffCentreSummerMusicProgram,TheLimaSymphonyOrchestra–YoungArtistsCompetition(firstprize),PianoTexasInternationalAcademy&Festival,BeijingInternationalMusicFestivalandAcademy,theInternationalKeyboardInstituteandFestivalinNewYorkCity,MoscowInternationalFrederickChopinCompetitionforYoungPianists,“XinghaiCup”PianoCompetition(firstprize),andTOYAMAAsiaMusicCompetitioninHongKong(firstprize).Dr.Zhoumaintainsanactiveperformingcareer.Sheappearsfrequentlyasasoloistandchambermusicianbothlocallyandinternationally.HerconcertshavetakenplaceinBeijing,HongKong,Moscow,AlbertaandcitiesthroughouttheUnitedStates.ShehasalsoperformedinsoloandchambermasterclassesformajorartistsincludingLeonFleisher,RobertMcDonald,theBrentanoStringQuartetandtheJerusalemStringQuartet.In2013,Dr.ZhouwasinvitedtobethesoloistinconcertfeaturingSergeiProkofiev’sPianoConcertoNo.1forcelebratingthe60thanniversaryofLimaSymphonyOrchestra,underthebatonofMaestroCraftonBeck.SheiscurrentlybasedinRochester,N.Y.

Arts Academy Recital Etiquette
StudentRecitalsarevaluableexperiencesforyoungmusicians.Unfortunately,theycanalsobeasourceofsomestressandanxiety.Belowyouwillfindgeneralguidelinesforbothperformersandaudiencemembersthatensurerecitalsareenjoyableforeveryone.Audiencemembersmustrememberthepurposeoftheirvisittotherecitalhall--tolistenquietly,actively,andappreciativelytothemusicbeingofferedbytheperformers.
Performers
§ Performersshouldwearappropriateattire.Properattireshowsrespecttoyouraudience,aswellastoyourself,andtowhatyouhaveaccomplished.Ofcourse,nooneshouldfeelobligatedtospendmoneyfornewclothes.
§ Performersmustbowattheendoftheperformance.Instructorandstudentwillpracticebowingbeforetherecital.
