President's MessageL
Life is ever changing. As it does, we must adjust to the new circumstances. The TRNA Board hasreceived the resignations of DEBBIE NIEMEYER and JACK LITfLE. Debbie has served on the Social Committeeand as Secretary, while Jack has headed up the Education Committee. We thank them both for their serviceto our association and hope that at some future date they will find time to serve again. In the meantime, asboth directorships have less than one year to go, the Board at its meeting held July 24 elected DORA GAY andDAVID OTfO to serve out the year. Dave was also elected as Secretary. In the same vein, DIANA SHEA wasappointed by the Board to serve a Archivist. Welcome Diana! We have our "help wanted" sign out for
a new newsletter editor-how about you?
For those unable to make our last quarterly meeting held June 28, we presented ROGER SUPPONA withour Quarterly Award for service to the Association. Roger is a mainstay in the Membership Committee, working faithfully and maintaining the Association's membership data base. With our membership size, that'squite a job. Roger received a certificate of appreciation and a $100 check. (He has used his own funds to buycomputer supplies and his own computer over the past couple of years to support us. ) Thanks again, Roger! We had our usual reports, plus specials on "the apartments," the Montano Bridge, recycling, and UnserBoulevard. We had no new business and adjourned in an hour and a half. Perhaps not a record, but close. Then we showed an interesting video tape, "Preventing Home Burglary," courtesy of PLAY PICK INSURANCEAGENCY. We also had the new membership pin map (boy, that's a lot of pins, Tom). As usual, DEBBIE TATUM
provided the refreshments-thanks Debbie!
I get a lot of calls in this job. Many ask questions about things that are covered at our quarterlymeetings. I wish more people, members and non-members alike, would attend our general meetings to gettheir answers. I also get a lot of calls form non-members and former members who want information andsometimes help with a problem. We do our best to help out, but membership provides our fine newsletterwith lots of good information and feel more impetus to help a member, but again, we do our best. Please getyour neighbors to join TRNA. Membership is our strength .

In addition to the highsecurity locks described above, deadboltlocks are a desired additional securitymeans to prevent doors being kicked in.A deadbolt lock has a solid metal bar thatcovers the gap between the door and itsframe. 'Last month you read some good news
about a new mid-school to be built in
Taylor Ranch. A newletter article prom-
ised that in this month's Mesa Messenger
our members could read a chronical of
how the battle was won, and indicated that
work remains to
be done.
ever, the mid-
school battle
not over,
yet, and there
indeed .significant work ~ to be done. On July 18 the APS Board
voted during its regular meeting to table
the action which would have authorized
the APS staff to finalize the purchase of
the Taylor Ranch land, referred to as the
Mariposa Site. Even though the Board
voted to build the school in Taylor Ranch
during their June 20 meeting, it still takes
another Board action to release the funds
to actually buy the land. This action was
tabled at the July meeting because Ms.
PATRICIA BRANDA was not present for the
meeting. Ms. Branda has been a Taylor
Ranch Site supporter and without her
presence, the issue could have ended in a
tie vote. As you can see, these matters
are very complicated, and we as citizens
cannot afford to rest on our laurals and
leave our interest to the good grace of
others. It is important that you continue to
let the elected Board members know how
you feel about the mid-school issue. It is
also very important that the Board members
who have supported Taylor Ran~h in this
in full force.Once work is safely under way on the
new school, there will still be a need forTRNA involvement. Our members shouldparticipate in design and implementationcommittee, to help insure that the projectis of the utmost benefit to our community. This will require that some members givegenerously of their time, but it will be timewell spent, and rewarding both for yourselfand the community. In addition to plan-ning for the middle school, there are otherprojects that will merit TRNA input. Theseinclude planning for anew elementary [ atSite G] and planning for renovation of theMarie Hughes [main campus] facility. Please contact the TRNA Education Com-mittee if you can help with these or othereducation-related projects. There is stillmuch to be done.
It seems that a summary of events is abit premature. However, suffice it to saythat the time has been long in coming.TRNA and other concerned Taylor Ranch

On July 19, the City's Environmen-tal Planning Commission heard a Parksand Recreation Department request tomake a zone map amendment and ap-prvve a site development plan to allowMariposa Basin to be developed as arecreational complex. The .
City Planning Departmentrecommended approval ofthe zone map amendmentbut deferral of site planapproval. Six TaylorRanch residents attendedthe Hearing. Five were infavor of the site
development amendment, but only two were in favorof approval of the site
development plan (bothare TRNA directors ). Thefour people who spoke inopposition of developmentof the Mariposa Basin foractive recreational.
purposes (primarily youthsoccer and baseball fields) felt that thebasin should essentially be preserved in itscurrent state and, if active recreation fieldswere needed, the City should buyadditional land to support those facilitieselsewhere ( at an estimated cost ofapproximately $4 million). Fortunately, the EPC recognized the crying need foractive recreation facilities in our ne-ighborhood and voted unanimously infavor of the zone map amendment andapproval of the conceptual site plan. Acopy of the master plan text that describesthe proposed development will be avail-able for review at the Taylor RanchBranch Library.
The drawings for the first phase ofthe recreational trails associated with thebasin development are in the final review
