Dear Parishioners,
Thanks to all who helped to make Mother’s Day last Sunday such a memorable occasion. It was great to thank our moms for the love they have lavished on us!
Speaking of mothers, this past week, our day school children honored Mary, the Mother of our Lord at our annual May crowning. It was a beautiful time of prayer for our entire school community.
This month of May would be a great month to make a special effort to pray the rosary. For some it is a traditional prayer that has fallen out of fashion, but for those of us who are a little older, we know how consoling and calming a prayer it can be. Some find that when they take a walk, praying the rosary helps to keep them from both worrying and feeling as though they have to be making plans for the next thing. It can free our hearts and souls to pray in all simplicity to the God who loves us. You needn't worry about remembering all the mysteries or praying them in order or keeping the exact count on the beads, it's commending ourselves to the care and protection of this Mother that is most important. She like her Son is very forgiving.
On another note, our Closing Mass for the last day of the school year will be on Friday, May 22nd at 8:00 a.m. If you have ever attended one of our end of the school year liturgies, you know what a grand and memorable celebration it is. All are welcome to attend this special all-school liturgy as we thank our loving God for our many blessings here at Holy Infant!

The fortieth day after Easter Sunday commemorates the Ascension of Christ into heaven. In the St. Louis Archdiocese, as is done in most dioceses, the celebration of the feast has been moved to the Sunday following Thursday, which marks forty days after Easter. By ascending into His glory, Christ completed
the work of our redemption. Tradition designates Mount Olivet near Bethany as the place where Christ left the earth. Today we celebrate that moment when Christ in the presence of His apostles, ascended bodily into Heaven.

The 4 principal (cardinal) virtues are prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. The theological virtues are faith, hope and charity. Are you cultivating virtue in your life? Is there a particular vice that you struggle with? “The goal of a virtuous life is to become like God” (St. Gregory of Nyssa).

The Deacon’s Corner Holy Oils – A 2-Part Article
Part 1 – The Origins and Symbolism of the Oils
The holy oils that we have at Holy Infant are visible in the ambry (“oil cabinet”) next to the baptismal font to the left of the altar. More than likely, you have been anointed with at least 2 of these 3 oils in your life. These oils are rich in symbolism and a key part of our Catholic faith. These oils are blessed each year at the Chrism Mass on Holy (Maundy) Thursday, by the Archbishop at the Cathedral, with a special form of prayer, expressing the purpose for which it is to be used and its mystical signification as well. These blessed oils are then taken to each parish to be used for the coming year.
Olive oil is utilized in the anointing oils of our Church. This is an ancient custom. In countries of southern Europe and the Mid-East, olive oil has always been a staple of daily life. It is used in cooking food and medicinally - internally and externally. In olden times, oil lamps were used for light. Ancient athletes and soldiers were anointed with oil prior to battle for strength. Hence, oil is used in the Church today to keep us strong in the never-ending conflict with the Evil One. The use of oil to express the imparting of spiritual strength is so important that the Church employs it not only for the anointing of people, but also for Churches, altars, bells, chalices, etc.
695. “Anointing. The symbolism of anointing with oil also signifies the Holy Spirit, [Cf.1 John 2:20-27] to the point of becoming a synonym for the Holy Spirit.” – Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC).

P G Today we celebrate one of the tenets of our creed: that the Lord ascended into heaven. From Mark’s Gospel we hear the final words Jesus spoke to his disciples shortly before he ascended into heaven. Those were words of commissioning, no less real for us today than they were to the disciples then. We are called to “proclaim the gospel to every creature.” For the vast majority of us, this means that we proclaim the gospel by the witness of our everyday lives. Treating others with dignity and respect, providing for those less fortunate than ourselves, being good stewards of the many gifts showered on us, coming together as God’s family in worship and praise—these are all signs that the gospel has taken root in our lives.

M M L M This is Mary’s month—the month of May Crowning, processions and the Rosary. In reflecting on the mysteries of the Rosary each day, we are gradually changed into the likeness of Christ.
“The Hail Mary’s of the Rosary,” writes Fr. Albert Shamon, “are like background music while you are watching our Lord’s life.” Let us pray the Rosary slowly and meditate on each mystery remaining focused on the life of Jesus.

Promises of Mary continued:
• Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying themselves to the consideration of its Sacred Mysteries, shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise them in His justice; they shall not perish by an unprovided death; if they are just, they shall remain in the grace of God and become worthy of eternal life. (Unprovided means a death for which no provision has been made.)
• Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the Sacraments of the Church.
• Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death, the light of God and the plentitude of His graces; at the moment of death they shall participate in the merits of the Saints in Paradise.

Anyone who works with, volunteers or comes in contact with children must be compliant with the Safe Environment Program of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis set forth by the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops).
Compliance includes attending a Protecting God’s Children Workshop, completing a Missouri Background Check, and reading and signing a Code of Ethical Conduct form. Additional background checks may be necessary if you have lived out of state in previous years.
To register online for a Protecting God’s Children Workshop and electronically sign the Ethical Code of Conduct please visit www.archstl.org and click on the Protecting God’s Children Link in the center of the page. You will be redirected to the VIRTUSOnline.org site to complete the registration process. Additional information regarding background checks will be given at the workshop. You can register on Monday from 4-8 p.m. or call for an appointment. Registering on time will allow you a choice of class times. Usually our 4:30 p.m. session fills up quickly. After the 29th of May 2015 we will be unable to guarantee you a time preference. The following are the fees for registration, tuition, books: Holy Infant registered parishioners: 1 child: $250; 2 children: $370; 3 or more children: $460. Non-registered parishioners: 1 child: $340; 2 children $550; 3 or more children: $730.
A $100.00 family non-refundable down payment is due at the time of registration. Please see the registration form for payment options. Registration forms including a financial agreement and payments must be completed by May 29, 2015 to avoid a $50.00 late fee per family. A $25 change fee will be charged to change sessions after initial registration. We want all children to be able to avail themselves of a religious education and will work with parents who may be struggling financially to accomplish that. Please consider giving this adult or child a Prayer Shawl, which has been made by caring parishioners. Our hope is that the person will feel the prayers, blessings and love when wrapped in the Prayer Shawl. He/she does not have to be a parishioner or even a Catholic. Each shawl is blessed by our priests and when possible, prayed over by the Joyful Hope Prayer group. There is no charge for these shawls, but donations of yarn or money are always welcome to help defray the costs! Tuesday, May 19: BREWHOUSE at the Ferguson Brewhouse. Join us for an evening of uplifting community, good food and drinks, a thought provoking speaker, and an inspired discussion. It runs from 7:00 p.m. through 8:45 p.m. Nate Schaff, the guest speaker, is a Life Teen missionary at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church and a musician. Presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 29: Senior dance—Rockin’ to the 60’s and 70’s by Scott Laytham and Karl Homes will be held at the James J. Eagan Center Gym from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Karl Holmes is one of the best vocal impressionists in the country. All are welcome.
