Descriptions of Papers

General

Papers should be between 5 and 10 pages, double spaced in 12 font. References should be cited within the body of the paper where applicable and there should be a full reference list at the end of the paper. You should have at least 4-5 references (not including class notes). Avoid the use of internet websites as references and above all else do not be tempted to submit website papers or major portions of papers from website materials. Though you have a choice of topics for papers 1 and 2, choose wisely because you must tie the 2 together in paper 3. Papers that do not follow these instructions will be penalized severely.

Paper 1

This paper should focus on a web laying technology (i.e., carding, wet laying, air laying or spun bonding) of your choice. You should look at some aspect of the process and its effect on web quality or web properties. Example Title: The Effect of Aspirator Type or Construction on Web Strength in Spunbonded Webs. (So 1) select a process –Spunbonding; 2) Select some aspect of the process – Aspirator Type; and 3) select a web property or quality- Web strength). Also, you may select multiple aspects of a process and or multiple web properties. Example:

Series Lecture(s) Topic1 1 Introduction: Course Syllabus,

Contact information, Course format.2 2-3 Introduction : What are nonwovens,

Nonwoven markets3 4-6 Overview of nonwoven products4 6-8 Structure of Nonwovens: Fiber

orientation distribution, Mass nonuniformity

5 9-12 Web Formation Processes: Airlay, Carding, WetlayMid Term

6 13-14 Bonding Technologies: Chemical Bonding, Mechanical Bonding (Hydroentangling and Needle-Punching), Thermal Bonding

The Effect of Aspirator Type and and Air Temperature on Evenness and Strength of Spunbonded Webs.

Paper 2

This paper should focus on a web bonding technology of your choice (i.e., hydroentangling, needle punching, thermal bonding, ultrasonic bonding, chemical bonding, and meltblowing). You should look at some aspect of the process and its effect on web quality or web properties. Example Title: The Effect of Barb Type on Strength of Needle Punched Fabrics. (So 1) select a process –Needle Punching; 2) Select some aspect of the process – Barb Type; and 3) select a fabric property or quality- fabric strength).

Paper 3

In Paper 3 you should tie the web laying process and the bonding type you selected in papers 1 and 2 to applications and products. Example: The use of Needle Punched Spunbonded Fabrics in Geotextile applications. In your paper you must also address why your specific web laying process and bonding technique make materials with properties suitable for the application you have chosen. You may discuss several products associated with the application you have selected.
