EXAM ENTRY & TIMETABLEIt is the responsibility of all students to ensure they are entered for relevant examinations by the due closing date; similarly, the student is responsible for ascertaining the timing(s) of examinations(s) sitting. Enquiries should be made to the Course Tutor or Examinations Office at the Campus you attend.

UNIQUE LEARNER NUMBER (ULN)Whilst at the College, you will be issued with a Unique Learner Number (ULN). The ULN is a personal 10 digit number which will remain with you throughout your life, similar to your National Insurance (NI) Number. Like your National Insurance Number your ULN will be protected and only used for the purpose that it is intended for. It will only be used to pull together your educational experiences and outcomes, enable you to view your learner record online and be used by government agencies who have responsibilities for education. For further information please contact the Admissions Office at your local Campus.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRESSouth West College’s Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) are student-centred areas, providing a wide range of quality resources to enhance the student’s learning experience.

The LRC contains traditional educational resources such as books, journals, software and audio/

visual materials, but also encourages the use of electronic information resources. In addition to the College’s resources, Higher Education students will also have access to a wealth of information through their associated University.

The Centres include high speed Internet access computers, printers, copiers and scanner to assist in student learning. After recent improvements the centres now offer dedicated areas for...

DescriptionThe Access Diploma in Computing course aims to enable successful students to progress to Higher Education Computing degree programmes. The course includes maths and communication modules of study which equate to GCSE English and maths. The course teaches vocationally relevant hardware and software skills to those wishing to follow careers in the Computing industry. A key aim is the training of competent individuals to A-level equivalent in order to progress to HE degree programmes.

Course ContentStudents study a range of subjects including: Mathematics, Communications, Programming, Technician Skills, Systems Development, Databases and Web Development.

Entry Requirements• Applicants must normally be 19 years of age

or over at the date of entry to the programme and have been out of formal education for two or more years.

• Applicants must provide evidence through the submitted application form and subsequent interview of a basic competence in written and oral communication in English and numeracy skills.

• Applicants must demonstrate in an interview motivation for and ability to cope with the academic demands of the programme and are considered on individual merit.

ProgressionSuccessful students may progress to Ulster University Foundation Degree or Honours Degree courses within the Computing discipline if they satisfy entry criteria based on UCAS tariff equivalence.

DescriptionThe Access Diploma offers a diverse range of Social Science subjects aimed at adult learners who would like to progress onto university education. The course provides entry into higher education and also improves employment opportunities. The programme of study also provides students with an interesting, supportive and enjoyable learning environment in which they can become better learners.

Course ContentThis course provides students with a varied range of Social Science and Humanities based subjects along with a detailed and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of these. Students studying this course learn about how modern society operates and people behave. The course can be studied either full-time or part-time, during day or evening, in Dungannon and Enniskillen campuses. Students study eight modules: Communication, Maths 1, Maths 2, Sociology, Social Policy, Social Research, Human Biology, Health & Social Care and/or Psychology (Dungannon); Communications, Maths 1, Maths 2 and Sociology. Studies in Contemporary Society, Explorations in Literature, Social, Economic and Political History of Ulster and Film Studies (Enniskillen). Students also improve their IT and Personal Study Skills whilst learning about the Social Sciences.

Entry RequirementsApplicants are interviewed to assess suitability regarding academic focus, motivation, commitment & drive, HE goals and career aspirations; they must pass short English and Maths assessments; they must be over 19 years old by the start date and must be out of formal education for at least one year.

ProgressionAccess courses are equivalent to ‘A’ levels and are an increasingly popular way to advance into higher education at a local university or further education college. Most Access students choose to study Nursing, Midwifery & Social Work. However students can also enrol onto any Social Science or Humanities related course such as Psychology, Sociology, Social Policy, Politics, Law, Media, Youth & Community Work or English Literature and even some specialist Science courses.

Assessment MethodsStudents will learn particularly through lectures and tutorials, and will be assessed by assignments, examinations, presentations and practicals.

DescriptionThe overall aim is to provide a sufficiently broad education in Financial Services that will ensure the degree holders are well equipped for further career enhancement. Students will attain a combination of technical, academic knowledge and transferable skills that employers locally are demanding and it is currently a skill area that has substantial employment potential.

Course ContentYear 1 units include: Personal and Professional Development with Finance, Economic Environment of Business, Financial Maths and Statistics, Introduction to Marketing and Financial Services, Law and Ethical Standards, Principles of Accounting. Year 2 units include: Finance and Investment Analysis, Corporate Governance, Financial Accounting, Management Accounting and Work Based Learning.

Entry Requirements120 UCAS Tariff points. 4 GCSE passes or equivalent including English and Mathematics. Qualifications equivalent to 120 UCAS points or approved Access course qualification or evidence of ability to undertake the programme through the accreditation of prior learning. Interview required.

ProgressionProgression from this Foundation Degree may take the form of either a career as a professional within the Financial Services Industry or the subsequent pursuit of a higher level academic qualification, for example Ulster University BSc Hons Degree in Business with Accounting or BA in Business Administration.

Assessment MethodsStudents will be assessed using a variety of methods including coursework and/or examination. A number of techniques, appropriate to the profession, are also used to measure student progress including observational assessments, interviews, research methods and presentations.

DescriptionThis qualification recognises learners’ understanding of administrative functions and activities. It accredits learners’ abilities to carry out a range of administrative tasks autonomously and has been designed to accredit their achievements in a modern, practical way that is relevant to the work context. The qualification is flexible, allowing learners to choose individual units that best fit their needs and level of achievement.

Course ContentDuring the one year course candidates will study two compulsory units: Working in Administration and Written Business Communication, and a number of additional units. Examples of optional units include: Making and Receiving Calls, Welcoming Visitors, Career Planning in Administration, Communicating with Customers, Teamwork in Administration, Financial Transactions, Organising Business Travel and Accommodation, Organising Meetings and Handling Diary Systems. Additional Word Processing qualifications will also be offered. Students who do not possess GCSE English and Maths upon entry will be required to undertake Essential Skills qualifications.

Entry RequirementsThere are no formal entry requirements for this course, however a reasonable standard of written and spoken English is required. Word processing experience is desirable but not essential.

ProgressionSuccessful students may progress on to a Level 3 Award, Certificate or Diploma programme, typically in Administration. Future public or private sector employment and career pathways include: Administrative Assistant; Receptionist; Sales Representative; Telesales Operator. This qualification provides evidence of achievement of a range of practical skills as well as of underpinning knowledge and understanding of administration.

Assessment MethodsType of assessment will depend on the particular needs of each individual unit but most units will involve course work. Text and Word Processing units are externally assessed by OCR.

The qualification is flexible, allowing learners to choose individual units that best fit their needs and level of achievement.

Course ContentThis is a one year course if a candidate has already achieved the Level 2 Diploma but will take two years for someone without Level 2. Candidates will complete compulsory units: Producing Complex Business Documents and Understanding Functions and Roles within Business Organisations plus a number of additional units such as: Supporting Recruitment and Selection Procedures, Verbal Communication in Business, Support Business Meetings and Working in an Administrative Team. Additional Word processing qualifications and Computerised Book-keeping may also be offered. Course ContentThe Foundation Degree will provide you with the opportunity to develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of early years and related issues, enabling you to become a confident and competent, well qualified Early Years Practitioner. Full time will be run over 2 years and will consist of 15 hours per week in college and 10 hrs. per week work placement. Part time will be run over 3 years and will consist of 7 ½ hours per week in college and 10 hour per week work placement. The Foundation Degree will give you a nationally recognised qualification and evidence of your ability to work in the Early Years sector.

You will also have the chance to articulate to the BA Early Childhood Studies at Stranmillis and South West College, Omagh Campus. You will study 12 modules in total for example: Shared perspectives in the young child, Skills and strategies for managing behaviour, Child protection, Special educational needs, Promoting

Description This course is a 1 year course attending college 3 days per week and a work placement of a minimum of 3 hours per week. The course will continue to develop the student’s working skills through theory related to the work environment and work experience within their chosen career. During the course the students will develop their written skills through completion of assignments. The student will have the use of state-of-the-art technology facilities.

Course Content The course is studied in a combination of classroom teaching and practical work placements Example: You will study a range of subjects whilst on the course units include: Core Units Career Exploration, Applying for a Job. In addition to the core units there will be a selected number of specialist units that will have a minimum credit value of 7 credits.

The programme of study is set out below: • Exploring business and enterprise • Overcoming barriers to work • Tackling problems at work • To enhance this qualification the student

will also complete an OCN qualification in Health and Safety at work.

Progression This course can lead directly into a career of the student’s choice as the student will have a work placement of their choice and ability. This course is designed to provide a broad understanding of the areas of exercise, fitness and sports development. A sports academy may be offered in each campus e.g. Soccer, Gaelic or Golf.

Course Content This Diploma is a practical, work-related course. Students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. It is equivalent to three AS levels. Students are required to complete all units such as Principles of Anatomy, The Physiology of Fitness, Assessing Risk in Sport, Fitness Training and Programming, Sports Coaching, Sports Development, Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise, Practical Team Sports.

Entry Requirements Standard requirements are a minimum of 4 GCSEs (Grade A*-C) or equivalent. Places on the course are limited so it may be necessary to enhance the entry requirements in the event of over subscription. An interview will be required.
